A rumor about a Friday prequel starring Vince Staples and Druski has caught Ice Cube’s attention. On Monday (March 21), a tweet started making the rounds that read, “A ‘Friday’ prequel is in the works for HBO max. Comedian druski and rapper Vince Staples are attached the lead roles.”

The person who shared the tweet, @OhThatMarco, even went as far to claim Cube’s son wrote the script, saying in a follow-up tweet, “O’Shea Jackson Jr. the writer of the script says the Movie will go into production this sometime summer.”

Cube, who played Craig Jones in the Friday film franchise, re-shared the tweet and wrote, “This is blasphemy,” a strong indication the rumor is completely fabricated.

The original Friday film arrived in 1995 and starred Ice Cube, Chris Tucker as Smokey, John Witherspoon as Pops and Tiny Lister as Deebo in addition to several other colorful characters. The sleeper hit netted two sequels, Next Friday (2000) and Friday After Next (2002), both of which found success at the box office.

But 20 years later, the fourth Friday film — which was tentatively titled Last Friday — has yet to come to fruition. Not only have Witherspoon, Lister and A.J. Johnson (who portrayed lovable crackhead Ezal) all passed away, but Ice Cube was also having trouble getting the film finished.

“I really apologize to my friend for not getting the next Friday movie made,” he said. “It’s not my fault. Some dumbass people in Hollywood at New Line Cinema, if you wanna … you can email Toby Emmerich and Richard Brener if you feel like I feel. Yeah, you punks had two scripts and you didn’t wanna do them.

“That’s the real. We were tryin’ to make that movie for years and we couldn’t get it done. We got the other three and we got our memories.”
