DJ Premier Explains How Westside Gunn Can Rap Without Drums On The Beat

Westside Gunn’s penchant for rapping without certain elements caught the attention of one of Hip Hop’s greatest producers in DJ Premier. Thanks to fellow producer Brady Watt, Premo and the Griselda hitter join forces for “The Narcissist,” where Gunn continues Griselda’s tradition of rapping without drums (at least for the first verse) to express his wealth and more.

“This one was more of me listening to Brady’s direction and vision,” Premier said. “I felt like it needed some drums for the DJ’s to blend into their mixes. In typical Westside Gunn fashion, the drums were kept out until the first verse, and hook were laid; so it could build up. I sprinkled in some outro scratches and it was sewn up. Visually, I was amazed at how accurately the video accurately depicts the lyrics.”

Added Watt, “DJ Premier deemed it worthy enough to send to the one and only, Westside Gunn, who is and has been my favorite artist out for a minute now. Preem reached out to Gunn and he laced two verses, and the hook same night. I couldn’t even believe it. At first, I intended it to be a drumless joint (in Griselda fashion), but Preem insisted he put drums on it AND a classic scratch hook using vocals from none other than Benny the Butcher and Conway the Machine.”

Westside Gunn To Extend Run With Two New Albums To Close 2021

The collaboration between Gunn and Premier is their third in recent years including 2019’s “Headlines” and “Shawn vs. Flair” from Gunn’s 2020 album Pray 4 Paris.

        1. Handle bars and bars of soap don’t count. He’s an extremely bad bootleg version of GhostFace Killah mixed with a tone deaf cousin that everyone always has that you acknowledge but you don’t want to make fun of because you’d feel bad about it. It’s clear that his brother, Conway The Machine and his cousin Benny the Butcher are the only reason Griselda stay afloat cuz he’s pretty wack as a rapper. He’s more of a hypeman like than anything else. He’s got creative ideas just not when he’s behind the mic.

          1. Haha he’s nothing like ghostface at all. I love
Ghostface and wsg they’re 2 of my favorites. Such a horrible weird comparison “deaf cousin” what the hell. U don’t like his style then don’t click on it that’s it. But don’t try to hate or diminish a great song and cool video. Has anyone heard “if u have nothing good to say then don’t say anything” That’s for u haters. I love the song and premo and brady watt make it sound great. Maybe u should go Wait for Kanye’s album. Benny and Conway are huge reasons for Griseldas success wsg would be the first to tell u. U don’t gotta like it, but stop talking nonsense.

            1. “Maybe you should go wait for Kanye’s album” What are you implying? Are you saying Kanye is wack? What happened to “if you have nothing good to say then don’t say anything”? Kinda hypocritical, huh?

            2. Haha u might like that kind of rap, not this stuff or maybe u don’t who cares about what anyone likes but u hop on westside guns song article and say bs. If u don’t like someone’s music don’t click on their article and talk bad about them, is my opinion.

        2. Speaking of uncultured, learn how to spell before attempting to insult someone. WSG isn’t his brother. Conway has bars, WSG has ad-libs and eccentric fashion… that’s it.

    1. “ where Gunn continues Griselda’s tradition of rapping without drums…” A lot of rappers do so. Plenty of Alchemist beats off the top of my head. Wu, Action Bronson, there are numerous artists that flow on beats without drums. Let’s celebrate hip hop as a whole instead of self prioritizing artists for the sake of misinformation and paid promo.

    2. If you really think about it, Griselda are basically a “real hip hop” version of Migos. Truth hurts.

    3. “His behind the Warhol. Dipped to Bergdorfs – shot up the whole store.”

      C’mon man, that’s ??.

    4. There is room for both sides however don’t pretend how much better the song got once they added drums and scratches…

    5. Weak as hell drums are the foundation for a good hip hop beat. Once in awhile ok but half your songs have trap, half no drums and then a few with drums has been Griselda lately.

    6. Westside nice at what he does .. he knows how to pick a beat .. a lot of y’all hip hop heads can’t dress .. fat sneaker heads with no drip .. so you guys can’t really appreciate fly rap ..
