Honolulu, HI

Kanye West had what sounded like an epic meltdown during a recent court-ordered deposition with Black-owned business MyChannel, who’s suing the Hip Hop mogul for allegedly stealing the company’s technology to sell his Sunday Service merchandise.

But according to court documents obtained by AllHipHop, the Plaintiffs learned he was in Honolulu, Hawaii “recording an album” and didn’t want to be bothered by their paltry $63,000 lawsuit. After all, Kanye reportedly said they were “lucky” to be deposing the “richest Black man in America and a Black Trump supporter.”

Hawaii has been fertile ground for Kanye West’s creative genius before. In 2010, he famously worked on his magnum opus My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy among the lush Hawaiian foliage and crashing Pacific Ocean waves. He flew in several of his favorite producers and artists to work on the project, including Q-Tip, Kid Cudi, Pusha T, Mike Dean, No I.D. and RZA.

As Pusha T told Complexat the time, working with Kanye on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was an unforgettably grandiose experience.

“Kanye West is the hardest working man in music,” he said. “If it wasn’t for deadlines, I don’t know if anything would be finished. I’ve heard things that I thought were perfect, and I come back and they’re more perfect — and they’re still not done.

“The guy’s the maestro. It’s a totally unorthodox way—well, it’s unorthodox to me, ’cause I’ve never seen anyone work in pieces like that. It was really on some Quincy Jones shit, man.”

Whether Kanye is attempting to recreate the magic he found in Hawaii over a decade ago remains to be seen.

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, selling almost 500,000 copies in its opening week and is often heralded as some of Ye’s best work. By comparison, 2019’s Jesus Is King landed atop the Billboard 200 upon its release, selling roughly half of what My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy did.

Kanye fans have been clamoring for a new project since he promised DONDA last year. In March, CyHi The Prynce told VladTV Kanye’s impending divorce from Kim Kardashian delayed the album.

“That right there, it’s a little monkey wrench in the game,” he said. “It’s all in the world now. Unfortunately, it’s sad. I don’t know if that’s gonna go all the way through, but I’m praying they figure it out. But that’s kinda like the hold-off, and you know he’s working on a lot of different things, so we’re getting back to it.”
