Kanye West was set to release his DONDA album on July 24, 2020, but the date came and went without much information about what happened. Over eight months later, CyHi The Prynce says the project is still in the works.
During a recent interview with VladTV, the G.O.O.D. Music affiliate revealed he’s currently working with Kanye in Los Angeles, despite his ongoing divorce from Kim Kardashian holding up the recording process.
“That right there, it’s a little monkey wrench in the game,” he said. “It’s all in the world now. Unfortunately, it’s sad. I don’t know if that’s gonna go all the way through but I’m praying that they figure it out. But that’s kinda like the hold-off, and you know he’s working on a lot of different things, so we’re getting back to it.
“I think he started working on it late last year, so I think once November, December, January comes around he kinda takes a hiatus, you know, vacation break getting with the family. So we’re back working, that’s why I’m out here too. I have a house everywhere he has a house.”
Speaking on how Kanye is handling the divorce, he added, “We didn’t really speak on it but I know he’s in good spirits. I know how much he love his family so it has to hit you some kinda way, you know what I’m saying? He’s just a human being. But you know, he’s getting through it.”
CyHi revealed he’s also working on his own album after spending a lot of time working with others behind the scenes.
“I am currently in my album mode,” he told DJ Vlad. “I think God put it on my spirit, like, ‘This is the time for you to really’… I’m not gonna say I’ve got comfortable, but I get paid handsomely to be able to make sure other artists are at the highest level of artistry.”
Despite bringing different energies around Kanye, CyHi feels Ye’s focus on Christianity was something that came about on his own.
“I do feel like subconsciously I do bring different ideas… that’s why I get paid what I get paid,” he said. “But I do bring certain energies, certain ideas may spark an idea. He may have even seen me in my outfit, but I think that was something him and God had going. ‘Cause you gotta think, he wrote ‘Jesus Walks’ before I ever wrote a Christian rap or anything that had to do with that.”

Cyhi is among a small cluster of artists that gets called on to help out behind the scenes a lot. I’m glad he’s getting his publishing checks cuz a lot of what we hear involves his writing and collaboration. Any Kanye album is essentially Cyhi interpreting Kanye’s hectic life to Kanye’s approval, dumbed down for an international audience.
You have no idea what the dynamic is behind the scenes. Nobody in these comment sections knows anything about it (including myself of course). The world should know by now that Kanye doesn’t write all of his stuff, but to assume it is all CyHi is odd. And if you believe it truly is Cyhi, then Ye needs to go back to Rhymefest because the pen he’s been using recently is not as good as it used to be. So congratulations, you played yourself. Tryna diss Ye you actually subbed your boy Cyhi (who I love btw) and didnt know it.
Why do artists still go to format Vlad?
That’s what I’m saying!!! And Cyhi for that matter. For a pro black artist and Vlad’s history, it don’t make no sense.
Im just gone listen that trash on Youtube anyway.
Cyhi is a lotta y’all favourite rappers …
Kanye has allowed his prime to surpass him with all the antics. I’m still willing to listen, but I won’t be blind buying anything fromYe anymore
I know you have your mindset on the matter. I’m not going all out defending him, but he needs help. His intentions might be pure, but he needs help to get to a peaceful level with self. Problem is nobody is holding him back firmly. He’s put too many musicians on the map so he’s consumed with himself and what he feels he can do and say. Keep him on the back burner and help him get back. He’ll be aiight.
His best music has always been when he’s in a dark place.
