Big Sean Rattles Off Eminem & Kanye West Among Top 5 Rappers Of All Time List

Fresh off the release of Detroit 2, Motor City rapper Big Sean sat down with Fat Joe for his Instagram Live series The Fat Joe Show. During their conversation, Sean Don revealed who’s in his Top 5 Rappers of All Time List.

Toward the end of the nearly 90-minute interview, the Terror Squad OG asked Sean to name his Top 5 dead or alive, and Sean proceeded to rattle off Biggie, Eminem, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and JAY-Z. But Sean had a tough time stopping there and said he could “easily” go 10.

“I could go Rakim, I could go Nas, I could go ‘Pac, I could go Snoop. I mean, so many bro,” he said. “I gotta put Outkast as one. There’s so many ways to go. The reason I call myself Big is because of Big Pun, Biggie Smalls, Big L, you know what I mean?”

Sean dropped Detroit 2 via G.O.O.D Music and Def Jam Recordings on September 4. The project boasted numerous notable features from artists such as Eminem, Royce Da 5’9, Post Malone, Travis Scott, Young Thug, Lil Wayne, Diddy and the late Nipsey Hussle.

Detroit 2 serves as the aptly titled follow-up to the 2012 mixtape Detroit. The album shot to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 upon its release, pulling in roughly 103,000 total album equivalent units in its first week.

But Sean isn’t one to rest on his laurels. He recently announced he’s working on another TWENTY88 project with his on-again, off-again girlfriend Jhené Aiko four years after they dropped the first one. Aiko contributed to the Detroit 2 tracks “Time In” and “Body Language” with Ty Dolla $ign.

    1. Based on a Top tier 2 CLASSIC album minimum; in no particular order:
      Biggie
      Kanye
      Andre 3000
      Jay Z
      2Pac
      Snoop
      Nas
      Kendrick
      Lauren Hill
      Ice Cube

      1. Kanye,Snoop, Lauren and Ice Cube.. all have ghost writers.. GTFOH with the bullshit. “ IF YOU DIDNT WRITE IT”.. you’re just a head.. a mouth.. period.. they’re all Pinocchio’s… bring out the real talented individuals… where is Gepetto????? Phresher is writing for em.. he’s got his hand up cuck boys ass… go ahead and crown his…

        1. Anybody taking Eminem’s word that he wrote every single word of everything he ever murdered (which is kind of stupid considering he hasn’t murdered anything for like 20 years now that didn’t have Rihanna tacked on there to sell records) is a fool. This dude hasn’t had a decent bar since Proof died. Ever wonder why?

Eminem’s more of a celebrity anyway. He came out at the right time, with the right producer, when hip-hop was so popular that even Ja Rule could sell a million records. He was the right color, the right age, and the right “look” to be that “next big thing” the music world used to have. I’ve always considered him a classic, top tier entertainer with a back story and passion for the game that’s unmatchable, but his actual MUSIC… is garbage. It’s garbage that’s SINCERE and rapped with precision, so is it great? Sure. But it’s not even close to top 100 if you really looked back and critically analyzed rappers from the 80s throw in there (when you still weren’t getting airtime or celebrity, you just spit fire bars).

As for ghostwriters… they all have ghostwriters. Eminem included.

      2. Andre, Snoop, Lauren Hill, and Ice Cube do not have two classics. You gotta throw Dre in there for Chronic and 2001 and even Em for Shady LP and Mathers LP. Also forgetting Drake with Take Care and Nothing Was the Same. Wayne with Carter 3 and 4. Cudi with the Man on the Moons.

    2. Kanye or Drake has to be withdrawn from any rappers best of list because they use other people bars. So that means Sean clearly does that shit too but all three 3 make good shit

      1. All these rappers use other people’s bars, even if they say they don’t. Come on… haven’t you noticed a noticeable rambling, incoherent quality to Eminem’s music since Proof died? Don’t tell me every single one of these rappers don’t get input or full bars from their buddies. Eminem can’t write a bar to save his life now that doesn’t sound like it came out of a special ed class. He’s actually be better off if he DID just say someone else’s words with feeling.

        1. Jay-Z wrote Still D.R.E. for Dre and Snoop.

On the other hand Jay-Z stole lots of Biggies rhymes and his flow from Biggie.

    3. None of these rappers could make this list in a world that could remember names like LL Cool J, Slick Rich, Too Short, 2Pac, Ice Cube, Eazy-E, etc. to infinity.

That’s the thing about top 5s. You’ve got to dig back into the past and really give this some critical thought, and these artists making these lists are still trying to sell downloads. So you’ve got to name drop still relevant artists from the distant past cause no one remembers the true greats, the ones who didn’t shake their a– on MTV to sell record (well, except for LL but that dude gets a free pass to do anything he wants).

There isn’t a rapper in the Top 100 today who can compare to those people. They may not have sold more records – because they didn’t have the “look” of a Slim shady or the national spotlight through Twitter and Facebook that artists like Kanye West benefited from – but damn, they were better than any of these actors.

    4. What’s the point of arguing about top ten? Everyone has there own opinion. And what do you mean Eminem can’t write bars anymore? You must not have heard the song on Detroit 2 with ems bars on it.

      1. Bro Eminem is rap legend, haters can’t listen to bars they already implemented a critique like mindset..
        Eminem got Oscar’s, Grammys etc
Eminem diss and destroys people careers when messed with

Even said by Dr. DRE, 50Cent
