Mulatto just struck gold.
On Monday (August 17), the Atlanta-bred rapper received a gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for her breakout song, “Bitch From Da Souf.” Released in January 2019, the track stood as the lead single for her Big Latto EP.
The feat is being touted as the first solo female rapper from Atlanta to have a gold certified single – which is up for debate. Technically Da Brat went gold multiple times in the 90s, but despite her heavy ties to Atlanta, the So So Def rapper is actually from Chicago. However, Mulatto wasn’t born in the A either and moved there at the age of two from Columbus, Ohio.
Mulatto’s been grinding for years, first appearing on the debut season of Lifetime’s The Rap Game with Queen Latifah and Jermaine Dupri in 2016. Though she won, she ended up turning down the So So Def Records contract offered to her and went on to gain notoriety as an independent artist and work with the likes of Trina, NLE Choppa, Saweetie and more.

Mulatto signed with RCA Records at the start of the quarantine, and told HipHopDX the decision was solely based on the good energy she felt while visiting the label.
“The day that I actually tied with RCA, I didn’t even go to sign,” she told DX in April. “The energy was that good. I wasn’t in the buildings that day specifically decided it was just more of furthering the relationship and seeing in the building and just meeting more people or whatever. But I don’t know the interview was right. So they had flew in my lawyer and I ended up signing it. I was in the building for 12 hours and we ended up signing, but it wasn’t even supposed to happen that way.”
