Thundercat Confirms He Contributed To Kendrick Lamar’s New Album

Stephen “Thundercat” Bruner has contributed to a few of Kendrick Lamar albums over the years, including the 2015 masterpiece To Pimp A Butterfly and 2017’s Pulitzer Prize-winning album DAMN. So it comes as no surprise the talented bassist has worked on K. Dot’s forthcoming, yet-to-be-titled album.

During a video interview with Japanese fashion brand Neet Tokyo, Thundercat confirmed his involvement, saying, “I think I worked on the new one a little bit. But not as much.” From there, he pivoted to Kendrick’s overall career.

“I feel like Kendrick is and will be a beacon of what it means to be one of the more creative artists of our generation through the way the albums have twisted and turned,” he continues. “It speaks beyond its years. Him as an artist, he inspired me a lot. A lot.

“I wish I could spend more time around him creating just because he gives off such energy and he knows what he wants a lot of time. Some of my favorite moments of recording are with Kendrick.”

Thundercat is preparing to release his next album, It Is What It Is, which is expected to arrive on Friday (April 3). Ahead of the release, he’s already shared three singles — “Black Qualls” featuring The Internet’s Steve Lacy and Slave icon Steve Arrington, “Dragonball Durag” and the title track, a tribute to the late Mac Miller.

The project also features contributions from Ty Dolla $ign, Childish Gambino and Lil B, among others. It marks Thundercat’s follow-up to 2017’s DRUNK.

The Los Angeles-bred musician was in the middle of an extensive tour when it was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic.

    1. Thats awesome. Kendrick makes great music so I expect the new one to be a chart topper as well.

    2. I myself am a bit disappointed in the direction Kendrick has gone. First off, he’s made way too many pop rap songs for my tastes… Example is that the song “Big Shot”. That’s complete pop rap music. U really loved Kendrick from 2008 and on… But at this point if you listen to nay Kendrick from the past 4 years, you wouldn’t be able to tell he is from Compton California. He used to be lauded as the second coming of Tupac, due to his gritty, raw, old school, Westcoast flow and sound. And at this point, Kendrick doesn’t sound like he could’ve been on death row… Where is in 2009 or so, he really did sound like he could have fit in with the Westcoast rappers back in the 90s. Everyone is welcome to their opinion, but I think all of TDE went pop for the most part. Jay Rocks Redemption was pop rap mostly, and his worst album to date, unlike Follow Me Home and 90059. Schoolboy Qs worst album ever by far is Crash Talk. His others are modern day classics. AbSoul hasn’t had a fantastic album since Control System, which is one of the best albums of the decade. Not highly listened to, but one of the highest quality rap albums ever. I think Q and Soul have more playback value than Kendrick older projects at this point.

      1. Ummm…how do I say this? Your analysis is spot on, no doubt. You nailed it. But, I should remind you that if you spit as hard you might end up dead. Kendrick flowed like a West coast MC when he was trying to get into the game. By the time he got into it and saw how the dynamics goes, he decided to tread softly. Hip hop is influential. It can influence a Mr. Nobody to pick up a glock and kill you for no reason!!! Facts.

        1. Completely agreed! I’m not knocking Kendrick..
He can make whatever he likes to make. I just don’t see him the same way I used to.

      2. Emotional and pretentious post bruh. Yeah you were bound to be disappointed because you attached your “lofty expectations” to whichever result EVERYONE was going to get, which was unnecessary…and who wants to hear Kendrick sound like Death Row? Shits supposed to evolve. You’re too cynical over music that you don’t even understand. Fake cynical hip hop head pitchfork sounding ass nigga

        1. Bro, it’s my personal tastes. No need to take it personally or offensively. It’s tastes. That’s it. I like old-school Westcoast, not radio rap.

      3. Dude, you copy and paste the same exact shit on every single Kendrick article. We get it, you liked him before but now you think he makes poppy music. How about don’t listen to him anymore instead of writing essays on articles?

        1. I write 20 second posts because hopefully it inspires Kendrick to not make more bullshit pop rap music. TDE went radio

          1. Sure, Kendrick will definitely see your post, posted on a hip hop website that I’m sure he goes on every single day. I’m sure he’ll go “Oh, this random ass commenter named Jay is really disappointed that my sound has changed over the years, like what happens with every artist under the sun. His comment is really moving me. Let me stop making songs for the radio just so this one guy out of millions across the globe can stop posting long 20 second comments about mine and TDE’s careers.” Get real. Either stop listening to TDE and move on or you’ll continue copying and pasting this comment until you grow grey hairs and drop dead. This took me 10 seconds to type by the way.

      1. They only did one song together and that was five years ago as a remix. Your favorite rapper probably had a pop collabo at some point in their career.

          1. Guess you don’t remember RA freestyling over a Taylor Swift beat? And you wanna make fun of Kendrick for being on a remix? Okay.

            1. Uhhh, I don’t even like RA The Rugged Man, but he was doing that ironically, making fun of Taylor Swift and other pop stars… Apparently that obvious and blatant parody went over your head somehow?

    7. Kendrick is one the most talented rappers, but I hate almost all his output. If Thundercat is involved I will probably sit out the next one too.
