DJ Premier Recruiting Nas For New Gang Starr Album? Wait … What?

DJ Premier sounded the horn on Wednesday (September 18) with a curious Instagram post alluding to a new Gang Starr album. The seasoned producer shared a video clip of a telephone (yes, an actual landline) and a message from Nas.

“Yo Premier, what up man, it’s your man Nas,” he says. “Is it true there’s a new Gang Starr album? That’s crazy, man. Let me know. Alright, chill.”

Preemo coupled the clip with “I Gotta Call @nas” in the caption.

The legendary Hip Hop duo was comprised of the late Guru and DJ Premier, leading many to wonder how it’s possible there’d be a new Gang Starr project with one-half of the group no longer here.

Guru went into cardiac arrest and slipped into a coma in February 2010. He died less than two months later at the age of 48.

The pioneering MC, whose 1993 Jazzmatazz debut was one of the first albums to combine a live jazz band with Hip Hop production and rapping, made seven albums under the Gang Starr moniker, including 1998’s Moment Of Truth.

If a new Gang Starr album is on the horizon, it’s a longtime coming. Shortly after Guru’s death, Premier told the Examiner, “Absolutely, absolutely we will [hear unreleased Gang Starr tracks].”

    1. Dope. Now this real hip hop news. Preme & Nas along wit some Guru unreleased verses. Datz watz up. Album should B called “Long Time Coming”. “Represent” was one of the dopest tracks back in 94 along wit “NY State of Mind” …. ” Nas is Like” too in 99. Preme and Nas dopest ever like Gang Starr

    2. The question I have is when they gonna release the last album I did with Guru? I’m a Super-Producer! Help a homeless brotha out!

      1. lol, I know this is a troll comment but anybody keeping track of this may have noticed that Solar is still trying to profit off of Guru’s legacy. Releasing a book about his life, taking credit whenever he can and he even had the nerve to try releasing the Gang Starr albums on streaming platforms under “7 Grand” to take royalties for himself. This clown truly has no shame at all!

    3. I think it would be blasphemous for Nas to attempt to take Guru’s place and name it a Gang Starr album. One feature from Nas on one song will be fine. Just in case y’all didn’t know, P rhyme is the new Gang Starr! Premier and Royce have been doing their thing!

      1. Nah, it will be a feature on an album of unreleased material. Preemo wouldn’t recreate GS with Nas taking Guru’s role, they’d just make a new band if they wanted to.

    4. Over due. We are over do for music with Nas and Preemo together. They made hits in the past. Us a fans deserve to hear it. Nas wouldnt replace Guru but we need that NY Boom Bap style of music that changes the way you walk when it comes on

    5. That was obviously a remake of the opening of the track “Aight…Chill” from Gangstarr;s “Hard To Earn” album. The track featured a lot of people calling Preemo’s answering machine (yeah,,,the 90’s) and leaving a message followed by the phrase “Aight…chill.” The first message on the track was from Nas. The background music is actually the same, too.A true Gangstarr fan would know that, though. This is pure hip hop nostalgia and GENIUS. Does not say anywhere that Nas is replacing GURU (RIP). “AIGHT…..CHILL.”

    6. Probably old throwaway raps wit new beats and guest appearances from nas and new rappers like griselda and a host of others from the past too it should be a treat tho i rox wit preemo

    7. They’re gonna do something for the 10 year anniversary of his death to keep the legacy going. Just watch. It will be more of a celebration than a proper album

    8. Gang Starr (long live Guru) is one of my favorite rap groups ever. Nas or Benny as an honorary substitute for Guru would be incredible.

    9. Preemo did say years ago there was some unreleased Gang Starr tracks in the vault that would see the light of day at some stage.

Let’s hope the LP is already wrapped up and ready to go, I don’t think I can suffer another long wait *coughs* NYGz 😀

RIP GURU / Gang Starr 4 Life!!

    10. Any albums that comes out labels Gangstar without Guru is not only a slap in the face to go when is Legacy but it’s disrespectful and totally disgusting to me that anybody would support this come on people. Other mcgs come together and this project is stopped if Nas is going to be on an album labeled Gangstar

      1. What are you saying? I can’t understand a word you just said. First off it’s spelt Gang Starr and if you took a minute out to check out the album it’s actually pretty dope. Some tracks are a bit short but the guest appearances also help to balance it out. DJ Premier has classics for days and he’s not one to chase money. Whatever Money is made I know Preemo will do the right thing and make sure Guru’s Son and family are taken care of. Instead of complaining go out and support that real Hip Hop. Unless you would rather hear that wack trash on the Radio do you. Gang Starr forever thank you Gang starr we needed this. I just wish Nas was featured on the album “Aiiight chill”
