Nipsey Hussle’s philanthropic work will be recognized at the annual BET Awards, which are scheduled to take place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on June 23.

On Thursday (June 13), BET announced the late MC and entrepreneur will be posthumously honored with the Humanitarian Award at the ceremony.

“As a prolific artist and leader, Nipsey Hussle was zealous about driving change for the betterment of his community, empowering and employing those in need and being an influential and highly respected leader,” BET Executive Vice President and Head of Programming Connie Orlando said. “His passing was a tremendous loss to the entertainment industry and to the culture.”

Nipsey was shot and killed in his hometown of Los Angeles on March 31. BET broadcasted his public memorial service, which was held at the Staples Center.

During his life, Nipsey spearheaded multiple activism initiatives.

His work included his investment in education by starting his STEM and technology center Vector 90 for African-American youth in the Crenshaw area of L.A., his “Our Opportunity” investment fund to rebuild urban communities nationwide that were neglected in the 2008 recession recovery and a gang violence summit with the LAPD scheduled just days before his death.

Orlando said BET is determined to uphold his name.
