Q-Tip recently revealed his mother, who celebrates a birthday on Sunday (December 9), is suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia. Earlier this week, the A Tribe Called Quest MC announced he was dedicating the next episode of his Beats 1 Radio show — Abstract Radio — to her and anyone else suffering from the brutal neurodegenerative disease.

“What up world!” he begins. “This weekend on Abstract Radio I’ll be doing a special show dedicated to my mother. It’s her birthday on December 9. Shout out to all the Sages out there. My mother suffers with dementia and Alzheimer’s. So, I’m gonna be playing a lot of her favorite songs.

“The dedication is not only to my mother but to all those out there who suffer with dementia and all of the families who have to deal with it or take care of a loved one who suffers with dementia. I take care of my mother and I wake up with her every day. Taking care of her has been something that’s been eye opening. It’s also been inspirational. So I hope this show will be inspirational for you. Mom, I love you so much. This show is not enough to express that.”

Alzheimer’s robs the sufferer of some of their most precious memories and can drastically impact short-term memory. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, one in 10 people age 65 and older has the condition, while almost two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimer’s are women. Additionally, older African-Americans are about twice as likely to have Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia as older whites.

The website also states someone in the U.S. develops Alzheimer’s every 65 seconds and yet, there’s no cure.
