After Spotify announced its new Hate Content & Hateful Conduct policy earlier this month, the backlash was swift. Many people pointed out that the company would essentially have to remove the music of thousands of artists based on behavior in their privates lives.
Consequently, the streaming service behemoth will reportedly “partially walk back” the policy.
According to Bloomberg, representatives for artists like Kendrick Lamar called Spotify Chief Executive Officer Daniel Ek and head of artist relations Troy Carter, and threatened to pull their music if the current policy stuck.

When TDE president Terrence “Punch” Henderson learned of the policy, he took to Twitter to express his opinion. “Whoa. Are they censoring the music? That’s dangerous,” he wrote.

R. Kelly and XXXTENTACION’s catalogs were among the first to be affected by the policy. Spotify removed their music from Spotify-curated playlists in an ambitious attempt to adjust to the #METOO era. Although Spotify made the decision to restore X’s music, there are currently no plans to promote Kelly’s catalog again.

In a strange twist, Kelly’s streaming numbers actually increased following the policy’s implementation.
