Eminem Calls Chuck D & B-Real “Gods” After Winning MTV EMA Best Hip Hop Artist Award

At the 2017 MTV EMAs on Sunday (November 12), Eminem opened the ceremony with a performance of “Walk On Water,” his new single featuring Beyoncé. Moments later, the seasoned MC won the award for Best Hip Hop Artist, which was presented by Prophets Of Rage artists Chuck D, Tom Morello and B-Real. The honor seemed to even surprise the recipient.

During his acceptance speech, Em mentioned he didn’t understand how he could nab the award without releasing an album since 2013’s The Marshall Mathers LP 2, but assured the audience that one was “coming.” He also acknowledged the Hip Hop royalty standing behind him, referring to the Public Enemy frontman and Cypress Hill MC as “gods.”

“First off, I want to start off … I’m not really sure how I got this because I haven’t had an album out in a few years,” he says. “I got one comin’ though. But yo, just before I forget, I wanna thank the fans and I wanna thank MTV. I also wanna thank Chuck D and B-Real for so much inspiration and they’re one of the reasons I’m even able to be here right now. These guys are like gods to me, man.”

Eminem’s ninth studio album, Revival, is expected to arrive any day now. In the meantime, peep the photo Chuck D sent HipHopDX from the ceremony below.

    1. For what did he win the Award?? He hasnt released anything yet. Thats why I hate these awards shows. Its not about music anymore they just hand out awards these days.

    2. His album isn’t dropping as soon as we think. thought he was supposed to reveal it today at the show? Sounds like he’s still putting touches on it and will let the single ride out for a while like he does every album. That nov 17 thing is bullshit

    3. regardless of how I feel about the idea of him winning an award for no reason.. He did pay homage to guys that were on before him… You gotta respect that at least

    4. Question:

How come a white man can get a raise or an award without doing nothing? Damn, America we are so F up!

      1. … why would it go to Kendrick? Not saying it should go to Em, but why you assume Kendrick when a bunch of good albums have been released this year, a cpl better than Damn (although damn was fantastic).

    5. This is the bullshit i always talk about this white dude hasn’t had shit out but a bullshit freestyle about trump and finally a single and he wins an award ….i dont give a fuck who he gave credit to, he dont deserve shit…

    6. How did he win an award without releasing anything since Shady XV, the SouthPaw soundtrack in 2015 and a couple freestyles in between? What kind of shit is that?

    7. Come on I mean much respect to Em who I consider a true legend in Hiphop but how TF can you win best hip hop artist when last album came out like 3-4 years ago and your new one hasn’t even dropped. The top of the Rap industry is about as real as WWE, everything is staged/orchastrated this has been my issue with Em even though he is good everything has been carter to him by the machine same as drake, also think they control him, because if he was as real as he claim to be no way does he even accept this award.

      1. He doesn’t even show up for his Grammy’s . Just because they are retarded for giving him that doesn’t discredit him in any way.

      1. Dude so much, its clearly bc he’s white and not because he’s the GOAT. He’s actually trash bc he’s white. Rap is only for african americans and period. Fuck logic, fuck lil dicky, fuck eminem, fuck post malone. Theyre only rappers bc of white priviledge!

    8. All the ppl asking why he’s winning an award better be wondering how Obama got his Nobel prize. I love Obama btw, just saying it happens to all the ppl who make the industry, whatever industry it is, feel all fuzzy inside.

      1. just two months after “winning” the Nobel peace prize Obama sent 30 000 extra US troops into Afghanistan to murder children. also let us not forget all the innocent children he slaughtered using drone strikes in Yemen and Pakistan. how about the big one, massive airstrikes on Libya? funny thing is Gaddafi was also gonna be nominated for a Nobel, unfortunately his plans for ditching the petro-dollar and instead use gold for oil trade in the region was a big no-no for the zionist financial elite. just last year, 2016 with Obama’s blessing over 27 000 bombs were dropped over countries the US wasn’t officially even at war with. what about the US nuclear program budget multiplied during Obama? what a great man!

    9. If eminem was half of the controversial and “i don’t give a f—” person he pretends to be, he would not have accepted this award in the first place ! Instead he just would have gone on stage to aknowledge his peers and the descent artists who actually released an album this year (kendrick, logic, etc.) to make the situation even more uncomfortable like kaepernic did when he took the knee. I guess the days where he rapped about “white america” are far gone huh ?

      1. Macklemore did that once. When he won the Grammy over Kendrick. People butcher about Macklemore being a pussy forever. Eminem is not as controversial as he used to be that for sure, but he literally said “I don’t know why I won this” and logic fell the fuck off

    10. now if they gave it to drake ,,,yall would bitch,,,,to em.yall bitching,,,,to logic,,yall would bitch,,,,,BITCH IF HE WON THAT ,ITS BECUZ OF A EFFEN REASON…………AFTERmATH……….SUCKERZZZZZ…..BEECH NEEGAS

      1. This ‘white rapper’ gave more to the culture than all your Lil’s and Young’s ever have and will – combined. So better stand up when you mention Eminem, you fucking loser.

    11. They now blame it on fan voting lol he should have never been nominated! Let’s see if the NBA will put Kobe on the ballot this year! White people have destroyed the culture of hip hop. Artist like Em have most definitely added to the artistry but the culture and the meaning has been obliterated. Jay, Cole, Kendrick, Migos, Drake, Meek, Dave East, Lil Uzi, Futur, Thug etc etc are just some of the artist that were completely disrespected by this foolishness

      1. What are you saying? Artists like Kendrick and cole were inspired by eminem. I agree to a point where eminem maybe made it more acceptable to have poppy hip hop songs (which I’m not a fan of) look at some of the mother fuckers on your list. Future young thug, they are the ones shaping the culture now and it is some of the worst music created in history

        1. Inspired by Eminem? What type of drugs are you smoking. Em is dope but he hasn’t inspired any of the current dope artist out. Eminem is not involved in the culture development and he knows it. Him calling Chuck D a god was him trying to pay homage to an artist who never got the same level of MAINSTREAM acknowledgement as him. I didn’t say I like Future, Uzi or Thug but those dudes hit the booth and put in work this year. If you can see the complete disrespect for the culture as a whole, you must be blind. Imagine giving best reggae artist to Shaggy or best Country to Hootie. That’s what this is. The man hasn’t released an album in half a decade. Beat it

    12. BEST HIP HOP ARTIST,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,MOTHAFUCHERS……WHO THE EFFEN ELSE IS ,,,,BETTER THEN THIS ARTIST IN HIP HOP…
,,,,,BEST HIPHOP ARTIST,,,,,,,,,DUDE WON,,,,,,LEAVE IT ALONE

    13. what i see in the comments most of the haters are talking about black & white rapper……Really ????
Taylor swift and katty perry didnt get even a single award but Dua lipa got . Same with the justin beiber ,bruno mars e.t.c.
So It wasnt only about album or songs. And i support eminems award

    14. Nobody gives a fuck about these trash award shows so it’s only right that MTV give the awards out random artists in the audience without any explanation as to why they’re getting it – “Hey Em, here’s an award for that album you released 4 years ago” “..thanks?”

    15. Okay, so in my opinion (which I’m aware of the probability that it will be debated on in some fashion) is that Marshall Bruce Mathers III got the award because he had released the song “Walk on Water” which speaks volumes to me and others who care to actually listen instead of simply dance away the night. I’ll start things off small. To start with “Walk on Water” isn’t about the chorus (which typically repeats itself as it is the chorus) as much as it is the idea of the chorus. Eminem gets real with it. He acknowledges that he set the bar high and might not live up to it. He focuses the song on the fans and their expectations. I could write more on this; however, I’m not gong to as it doesn’t matter so much what I have to say as much as it matters how Eminem continues his legacy. I’ll end with, there’s mutha fuckin’ substance in his fucking songs and more than even Kendrick Lamar and other greats over recent years have had. NO, “Walk on Water” may not be so danceable but Rap is supposed to be more about substance than anything as it is the most poetic form of music there is and thus I believe that “Walk on Water” is damn well worthy of that award no matter how great it truly is for his substance in his songs, especially “Walk on Water” ft.. Beyonce needs acknowedgement.
Oh, and it’s nice how harldy anyone noticed who awarded him. Some great legends! That stage must have been similar to the one in heaven that night!

    16. Eminem should have acknowledged Tom Morello as well. There would be no Prophets of Rage if it wasnt for him. At the end of the day this is just music but whats going on in the community effects everyone leaving comments a lot more than production and rhymes.
