London, England

At the 2017 MTV EMAs on Sunday (November 12), Eminem opened the ceremony with a performance of “Walk On Water,” his new single featuring Beyoncé. Moments later, the seasoned MC won the award for Best Hip Hop Artist, which was presented by Prophets Of Rage artists Chuck D, Tom Morello and B-Real. The honor seemed to even surprise the recipient.

During his acceptance speech, Em mentioned he didn’t understand how he could nab the award without releasing an album since 2013’s The Marshall Mathers LP 2, but assured the audience that one was “coming.” He also acknowledged the Hip Hop royalty standing behind him, referring to the Public Enemy frontman and Cypress Hill MC as “gods.”

“First off, I want to start off … I’m not really sure how I got this because I haven’t had an album out in a few years,” he says. “I got one comin’ though. But yo, just before I forget, I wanna thank the fans and I wanna thank MTV. I also wanna thank Chuck D and B-Real for so much inspiration and they’re one of the reasons I’m even able to be here right now. These guys are like gods to me, man.”
