The taping of the BET Hip Hop Awards went down in Miami on Friday (October 6). 2 Live Crew’s colorful frontman Luther “Uncle Luke” Campbell was honored with the 2017 “I Am Hip Hop Award” for his contributions to the culture.
During his acceptance speech, the teleprompter apparently failed and Uncle Luke had to freestyle the rest of it. At some point, he feels he possibly said “something bad” about Funkmaster Flex and Kool DJ Red Alert.
On Saturday morning (October 7), the 56-year-old rap vet took to Instagram to clarify statements made during his speech that he feels may have been misunderstood.

The video caption read, “Let me set the record straight if anyone misinterpreted my speech at the BET Awards last night that I said something bad about @funkflex #djredAlert your FUCKING WORNG.”
He went on, “what I was trying to say was when everybody else was shiting on me Funkmaster Flex broke my music in New York along with DJ Red Alert giving me my name I will always be grateful to those guys. If anyone knows me they know that I do not make Corrections with what I say I wear that shit on my shoulder.”
For whatever reason, Uncle Luke clearly thought it was important to shed light on his statements and reiterate how important Flex and Red Alert are to him. No video of his speech has been made available to figure out exactly what he said that could’ve been misconstrued.

“My teleprompter went out, yes it did, like I said, so I shot from the hip, and you know when I shoot from the hip, some things come out and people interpret some things where they misinterpret,” he said in the video. “Some people might have misinterpreted that I said something bad about Funkmaster Flex and Red Alert.
“No. Those are my guys,” he continued. “What you should have heard is Funkmaster Flex broke my music in fucking New York. You should have heard Red Alert is my friend for life who gave me the name Uncle Luke … I love those guys ok?”
The BET Hip Hop Awards 2017 air on Tuesday (October 10).
