Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington took his life on July 20, bringing an abrupt end to his musical journey. Throughout his lucrative career, he’d collaborated with Hip Hop artists like Rob Swift of the X-ecutioners, DJ Z-Trip and JAY-Z.

JAY, who teamed up with Linkin Park for the 2004 collaborative EP Collision Course, stopped by the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge earlier this week and performed their breakout hit, “Numb/Encore.”

After his performance, he spoke to the BBC’s Clara Amfo about mental health.

“Hopefully his death serves as a wake-up call,” JAY said. “Mental health is a real thing. You never know what people are going through. Money or fame doesn’t mean anything if you’re not happy inside.

“A lot of people, we go on and we don’t deal with what’s happening to us,” he continued. “Especially if you’re a performer like that. You just start numbing yourself. You just become numb. He’s singing it. You just go and get bigger audiences and things like that and you move further away from yourself.”

Later in the performance, he also performed “Family Feud” from his critically acclaimed album,4:44.
