Atlanta, GA

Monday (July 17) is Killer Mike Day, at least in the city of Atlanta. The Atlanta City Council celebrated the Run The Jewels member, whose real name is Michael Render, with a day named in his honor. Mike received the accolade for his role as an ambassador to the city and his steadfast work as an activist.

“I respect you in so many ways,” City Councilman Andre Dickens told Mike, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “You represent the ATL well.”

During the ceremony, Mike had a chance to speak to the council members and others in attendance. The veteran rapper took the opportunity to address issues that concerned him, much like he did earlier this year when he was honored by the Georgia State Senate.

“Atlanta City Council members, I challenge you to make sure that this city is not polarized by race and/or class,” Mike said. “I challenge you to make sure that BeltLine has affordable housing.”
