Kanye West was recently profiled by journalist Jon Caramanica for The New York Times’ style publication, T Magazine.

Within the feature, Caramanica details West’s quests to go from Hip Hop elite to a respected member of the fashion community.  The article documents West’s thoughts days after he debuted his adidas collection at the Yeezy Season 1 fashion show in New York City and chronicles many of his fashion woes leading up to the presentation.

“I dreamed, since I was a little kid, of having my own store where I could curate every shoe, sweatshirt and color,” West says during the story. “I have sketches of it. I cried over the idea of having my own store.”

Perhaps, the most interesting quote within the feature concerns Kanye’s portrayal of himself.

“I’m not a celebrity,” he says. “I’m an activist. The fact that when I see truth it’s really hard for me to sit back and just allow it to happen in front of me on my clock makes me, a lot of times, a bad celebrity.”

He credits his “amazing wife”[Kim Kardashian West] and “supersmart child” for helping him become less egotistical.

“Before I had those outlets, my ego was all I had,” he says.

Still, he sees an anger management doctor partially because he has to after attacking a paparazzo in 2013, but also for perspective.

He offers an analogy to explain his perception of his ego.

“I have this table in my new house,” West says. “They put this table in without asking. It was some weird nouveau riche marble table, and I hated it. But it was literally so heavy that it took a crane to move it. We would try to set up different things around it, but it never really worked.

“I realized that table was my ego,” he continues. “No matter what you put around it, under it, no matter who photographed it, the douchebaggery would always come through.”
