Lil Wayne’s Cash Money Records Lawsuit Explained By Combat Jack

Complex recently broke down the Cash Money Records controversy involving Lil Wayne and his father figure, Birdman.

In a new visual, titled “Lil Wayne vs. Cash Money: The Lawsuit Decoded,” entertainment lawyer Reggie Ossé (a.k.a. Combat Jack) highlights several interesting facts within the official legal documents.

For instance, Ossé says court documents reveal that Lil Wayne has been fighting with Cash Money for years. He’s also restructured his contract numerous times since first signing with the imprint in November 1998.

Wayne’s original contract was agreed to have been completed with the release of Tha Carter III in 2008. He was then responsible for putting out four solo albums and one duet album, which he accomplished with Rebirth, I Am Not A Human Being, Tha Carter IV, I Am Not A Human Being II and two subsequent Young Money albums.

Ossé points out within the clip that documents show Wayne handed in Tha Carter V last December. Cash Money failed to pay the rapper $2 million for completing the project and $8 million as part of a restructured deal previously agreed upon.

The suit also alleges that Cash Money did not grant Wayne 49% ownership of Young Money. Instead, the label registered the copyright for Young Money entirely under Cash Money.

Wayne has also been duped out of Drake’s earnings. Ossé explains that Cash Money has failed to pay Wayne his 30 percent of Drake’s recording profits and the label has not shown the rapper the financial statistics regarding his artist.
