Bun B is taking his “Religion and Hip Hop” course digital.
Due to the increased demand for the class – off campus – Rice University has extended the popular course through its Center for Digital Learning and Scholarship.
Bun will continue to assist Rice’s Religious Studies professor Anthony Pinn with the lecturing.
“This course gave me the opportunity to let people see a side of Hip Hop that isn’t always discussed,” Bun said in a statement. “We’ve started a conversation that cannot end until people have a better understanding of who we are and what we do.”

The edX site on which the class is listed describes what students will work on during the six-week course.
According to the site, students will explore the ways in which Hip Hop culture discusses and provides life meaning in complex ways through a discussion of the history and content of Rap music; an examination of religion in Rap music; an exploration of the religious sensibilities of Rap artists; and a discussion of the implications of the connection between Rap and religion.
The professors will also intertwine a mix of videos, readings, music, images, stories and behind-the scenes insider perspectives to carry out the coursework.
Students will be asked to participate 2-5 hours per week and complete assignments based on the required reading and lectures.
