With his debut album Under Pressure released last Tuesday (October 21), Def Jam rapper Logic sat down with HipHopDX and spoke about how increasingly constant Internet access continues to have an effect on the shift away from physical music formats.
“I believe that where technology is going, that you’re gonna be able to be in the desert or the Amazon or any street corner and have WiFi at all times,” Logic says in a clip that premiered as a part of today’s DX Daily (October 27). “I believe that the MP3, the ‘physical’ MP3 on your phone, is gonna be looked at as vinyl or CDs in ten, fifteen years. If you have access to the Internet at all times and streaming, why would you even need to buy it? If it’s always gonna be there? As long as you have power on your phone and you’re not broke and you can pay your phone bill, you can always have everything at your fingertips. And that’s a little disgusting. It sucks. That’s where we’re going. I like vinyl, man. I like cassette decks and stuff like that but it’s just not what it is anymore.”
yeah no shit. its called evolution.
I agree. A debut like Logics should be doing 200k first week. For it not to crack 100k is an indictment of what has happened to music sales in just the last 24 months.
I totally missed the boat on this. I knew there was something fishy about AbSouls numbers even for an independent because I talk to people on the street and they love Ab-Soul. The numbers don’t match the reach of these artist. We are getting close to a point where a major artist wont break 1,000 units.
Focusing on touring is not sustainable. You have to find a way to sell this music or at least get revenue from its consumption. I dread to think of the implications of that.
ab soul had no promotion and wasnt available in stores
logic sold more than t.i., tyga, 50 cent, game, french montana, ace hood to name a few.
take Fif’s name outta the flop list AA was initially a mixtape and he released every track on iTunes off the album before the album was in stores and still did 50K 1st week and about 120K ovarall todate independently So…
Even if they had wifi everywhere, I’d still want to buy the music I really want. Services like Spotify don’t have everything
there will always be a market for people to buy their shit..but their real money comes in forms of tours and shows which is why it makes sense now adays to hit it big with a song then tour instead of being made bc if your industry made you get alot less $$
CD to mp3 that’s evolution (I agree 100%),because mp3 makes music more easily accessible. That’s the whole idea of evolution. Making something better than what previously came before it. But I hate when people call the music that 95% of these new wack rappers are making “the evolution of hip hip”.Evolution is meant to make something better NOT worst!,
so the nigga dropped an album and got a little buzz and now we get logic news.. cmon yall DRinding for real this kid been out.. now every thing he says is gonna be posted until his buzz dies and u hop on the next nigga nuts GTFOH
mp3 will never be the “new” vinyl, lol. They are vastly different in terms of quality…it would have been better if he said a new standard…I feel what he’s saying though..but he wildin haha
I think he meant mp3 will be as big to music as how vinyl was.Making it the new vinyl.
Touring shows and merchandise is how most rappers make there money from music.Record sales don’t sell that much.
Record sales don’t sale much. Wow. Amazing. Incredible. It just doesn’t work like Apple.
Lol yeah obviously
This clown states the obvious and HHDX writes an article on it like hes some kinda genius
LMAO wtf this guy is an idiot. A new version of digital music will not have the same impact that vinyl/CD to mp3 had. The start of the digital age is what makes vinyl and CD obsolete so how the hell will a new compressed file have that same impact? The only thing that is left to do with digital music is compress the file to the current size without losing frequencies and jeopardizing sound quality. and wtf mp3 is NOT PHYSICAL, it’s fucking digital you fucking moron!
totally agree, like wtf? where do we go from here that would make mp3’s obsolete? he doesn’t make since. Digital is the last frontier unless we get to uploading to our brains then… it’s a different story but til then digital is here to stay. He makes as much since as an asshole on my elbow!
He’s saying that things like Spotify and streaming music will make MP3’s obsolete. There is no need to download if you have internet connection everywhere you go. You guys are stuck in the past.
This guy is a true white trash man. Smoking, that’s very lame. Does he have tattoos too? If so, there’s only Apple products missing. Or probably not.
if your looking for upscale, rich, 1% dbags your on the wrong site..see you on forbes not a hiphop site lollll
and on top of that dudes nice.
I agree and disagree. I feel yeah, the music will be the music and it will be almost free. But physical copies could take on a new value. To have a physical cd, with the liner notes, booklet, case, etc. is like owning a sculpture or art piece. At least thats what I’m banking on.
One big difference, the sound quality. And there’s no such thing as a ‘physical’ mp3. it’s just a series of 1’s and 0’s and the end of the day. Vinyl is forever and it’s for music that stands the test of time. Most hip hop is disposable music, mp3’s and streaming is where that stuff belongs. People will buy Illmatic or The Chronic on vinyl because it’s timeless, amazing music. You think anyone would buy Chief Keef on vinyl? Hello no, because it belongs in the trash.
i definitely bought the chronic on vinyl
The subject matter on the chronic was trash you must just prefer beats.
“to each his own” the chronic is one of the hardest west coast gangsta rap cds ever homie.
Vinyl and CD’s are physical, therefore collectable, and therefore valuable over time. How old is this kid?
cds are only getting more worthless everyday b
but to say “hey, i got a michael jackson thriller album!” for vinyl or even cassette or cd is a major collectable. #bigbucks
vinyl moreso than the other mediums, vinyl sales have been steadily increasing while digital music makes cds obsolete
what makes you think digital is gonna last that long?
pay attention followers……………….
if you depend on technology and it fails you won’t have what it originally came from to refer to
like… illuminati controls the interwebs thou
This dude is so stupid. There will never be a world wide wifi network, where you could connect in the desert or in the Amazon. And mp3’s are not physical, they are digital files. If you want to play music on your phone but you don’t have unlimited data and no wifi, then you need to download it
lol dumb nigga wifi WILL DEFINITELY be everywhere… time will show you thou
People pay for mp3’s?
