The Top 10 Most Popular Hip Hop Singles The Week Of 2/17/14

After last week’s appearance of Common and Ab-Soul’s No I.D. produced single in the Top 3, this week, a TDE artist claims the top honors with help from another veteran emcee. With Oxymoron less than a week away, ScHoolboy Q’s latest Raekwon featuring single leaked earlier this week. “Blind Threats” will appear at just beyond the halfway mark on the album’s tracklist, and Q says he “just need somebody from [Wu-Tang Clan]” at his recent listening session. Following the TDE artist at #1, Philadelphia native Cassidy flipped Nicki Minaj’s recent single on its head with his release of his “Lookin Ass Bitches” freestyle. The Weeknd helps carry out the Top 3 with a remix of “Drunk In Love” released on his 24th birthday this past Sunday (February 16).

This week’s Top 10 also features music from Rick Ross, whose album snippets tease out what fans can expect from Mastermind, two other “Drunk In Love” remixes, and yet another Kanye West rant.

ScHoolboy Q Enlists Raekwon For “Blind Threats”

With anticipation for the upcoming release of ScHoolboy Q’s Oxymoron album building, Q let off his Raekwon assisted “Blind Threats” from the project earlier this week. With a beat crafted from previous collaborator Lord Quest (who also produced the emcee’s “Figg Get Da Money” in 2011) the song carries an ominous feeling with the emcees’ each in laid back form on the eerie, vibe-laden single. The song, which has since been removed from Soundcloud, features Q spitting the type of veiled drug references Rae might have twenty years ago (or on his next album for that matter). “Pretty Snow White turned eight today / Selling that base no Dr. Dre” ScHoolboy raps in his first verse.

As reported by HipHopDX earlier this week, ScHoolboy Q explained the motivation behind Raekwon’s appearance at the album’s listening session. “I just needed somebody from [Wu-Tang Clan] on the album,” he said. “I just needed it. Whether it was Cappadonna or Raekwon or Ghostface—I needed somebody. Me and Raekwon happen to run into each other. He wasn’t even going to an interview or nothing. We just happened to run into each other. We ran into each other in the elevator. Nothing music related. I wasn’t going to do music. He wasn’t going to do music. He just walks on the elevator I was on. I wasn’t going to say nothing to him. He said something to me. I ain’t wanna just say something. I wasn’t about to serve myself. When you meet New York niggas, they’ll serve you. They shook my hand and damn near threw that muthafucka around my neck like, ‘Get yo bitch ass outta here.’ So I’m like, ‘I ain’t going for that one this time.’ [Laughs] We’ve been trying to get a record together for eight months.”

Cassidy Reworks Nicki Minaj’s Latest Single

After stirring up controversy for the use of an image of the Civil Rights activist Malcolm X as an unofficial cover to her recent single “Lookin Ass Nigga,” Nicki Minaj’s latest single was quickly repurposed by Philly rapper and frequent remixer Cassidy. (Minaj removed the picture from the single’s promotional campaign and addressed the issue in a public apology on Instagram.) Cassidy’s version, which not surprisingly flips the gender theme on its head, uses the same device as Minaj to call out what he considers questionable females in a single, long-form verse. “Stop, you ain’t Kanye fiancee,” he raps, “You got Nicki, Rihanna, Beyonce / You will never be none of them / You under them / They wouldn’t even speak if you was standing right in front of them.” Cassidy brings up Minaj’s name in at least one other section, describing why he recorded a remix in the first place. “My bro said, ‘Yo, listen to this Nicki rap / So I listened to the Nicki track / Then said, ‘Damn, pull that shit that you just played from Nicki back.”

The Weeknd Remixes Beyonce and Jay Z’s “Drunk In Love”

Surprising fans with a new remix on the day of his 24th birthday, The Weeknd let loose his take on Bey and Jay Z’s “Drunk In Love” earlier this week. The Weeknd’s version, released at the tail-end of the Valentine’s Day weekend, came after a host of remixes from Kanye West, T.I., Diplo, and the song’s original co-producer Detail. Offering up his signature slow-tempo and hazy production, the Canadian singer switches out the sultry love story from the original for another pill-heavy tale of models “passed out in the shower.” Besides his spot in the Top 3, the singer also added his touch to the recent DJ Mustard produced Ty Dolla $ign and Wiz Khalifa single “Or Nah” yesterday (February 21).

The Weeknd, who released his debut album last year in the form of Kiss Land, opened up a storefront for his latest Official Issue clothing line on his website yesterday (February 21). Available on his site, the line expands on his previous fashion endeavors with an offering of branded t-shirts, sweatpants, sweatshirts, hats, and more.
