Nicki Minaj has ramped up the rollout for her next studio album, The Pink Print, releasing the single “Lookin Ass Nigga.”
In an interview with DJ Drama on his Shade 45 radio show, Minaj spoke about the track, which has received some criticism due to its Malcolm X-Themed cover art. “All the real niggas I know fuck with the song,” she said. “If you bitchin’ about this song, somethin’ ain’t right, because all my real niggas textin’ me lie, ‘Yo, I’m so glad you gettin’ these niggas’ asses!’ I’m talkin’ about niggas that really move weight, you know what I’m sayin’?…I dunno, if you’ve got a problem with it, you guilty of somethin’.
Nicki also spoke about how “Lookin Ass Nigga” came to be. “I was in New York, and I don’t know if he was out there,” said Nicki of Detail, the song’s producer. “That was for the BMI thing. They had given me all these awards, and they honored Cash Money, and we went out to eat, and Detail was out there acting crazy, getting mad drunk. So Safaree went outside and spoke to him like, ‘Yo…Nicki’s about to start working on her album heavy,’ and he [said], ‘Oh word? I’ve been trying to get in the studio with her.’ So they set it up, we came about to L.A. …and ‘Lookin’ Ass Nigga’ was the first thing I did with him. It took a minute because I wanted to perfect every line… and it came out really good.”
Finally, Nicki spoke about The Pink Print in general. “It’s a classic album,” she said. “That’s all I can think about right now. …I’m just working on the album. Nothing else is really gonna take precedence over that.”
