While in New York City, New York to perform at the FADER Fort, Kendrick Lamar took some time out to talk with the publication about sticking with certain producers to keep his sound consistent. During the interview, he said that he finally nailed the marriage between his rhymes and beats and that he won’t be straying too far from the formula.
“I do all my music with my in-house producers. My number one cat by the name of Sounwave, another cat by the name of Tae Beast and Willie B,” he said. “I always want to keep it in-house because that’s the sound I’ve been building on for years, getting the vibe right. We had a lot of trial and error, and we finally have it right to know what I sound best on. I feel like what I have now, I don’t want to lose. Once you lose that, you lose the base that you came up with as far as people liking your music.”
He also spoke on his collective Black Hippy, which also consists of Jay Rock, Schoolboy Q and Ab-Soul. The Compton, California native explained the group’s intention, stating that they’re trying to sidestep expectations placed on artists by the industry and radio.
“Carefree. That’s the meaning behind that title. We do what we want to do, we’re not confined by what the industry’s telling us what to do or what the radio is telling us what to do. We just want to accomplish making our own stamp, as far as making our own movement and not going about things the way the industry wants you to go about as far as a group project. There’s a new generation out there and they feel what they feel and they dislike what they dislike. And right now, they like Black Hippy.”

Good stuff…if he doesn’t go the way of the mainstream….he can last a very long time in the rap game.
still ain’t heard this nigga on a dre beat.. c’mon son!
he’s saving them
Hip Hop DX needs to get off Lamar’s dick already… God damn. Every other day there is something about Kendrick here.
You clicked on the link when you saw it, which HHDX wanted you to do. #theywin
Besides, Kendrick Lamar obviously is gaining popularity quickly so fans are gonna want to check up on him…
stfu nigga. the dude is very talented and people enjoy his music.
Kendrick making moves. Its good that he is trying to perfect and keep his sound. He realizes how important his fans are to him. He won’t let these mainstream DJs, producers, radios, etc…. take his sound away which is a recipe for sustained success.
This is how everyone ends up changing. When they change their sound. Jay-Z perfect example. Not hating but when i was listening to reasonable doubt then i turned to blueprint 3 it dont have that same sound to it anymore. Lyrics have to change to the sound somewhat and thats when you start falling off
omg hes sooo sexxy
He’s exactly where he wants to be and that’s good for everybody, this guy keeps his thing pure and doesn’t fuck with the formula. Kendrick is grassroots anyway. Getting a variety of the hottest producers and features may work for other people but this guy knows that will dilute all his hype and sound and why do it? He’s been on top of his game doing his own thing, his way, with his people, and that’s the endearing appeal of him. Kendrick is the future.
AMEN.
HE LACKS SWAG AND GOOD LOOKS.
THATS BAD WHEN IT COMES TO THE ENTERTAINMENT BUSINESS..
Black Hippy Hoe!!!
