Nas may not be putting out Lost Tapes 2, but promises to deliver with his forthcoming solo album. The Queens, New York rapper spoke with Billboard.com about progress to the follow-up to 2008’s Untitled, claiming that he’s in a new state of mind and is inspired by new cats in the game.
“The last record I did was, I was in a different place than I am now,” he said. “Now, I’m happy to express that different place and I’m just happy about music. I’m watching everyone do their thing, young guys, women, artists just doing they thing.”
Naming Odd Future, Lil Wayne, Drake and more as current influences, Nasty Nas said that his tenth solo LP doesn’t yet have a concept. “My new album that I’m working on is free flowing,” he said. “At this point, there’s not one concept that sums up the whole record. I’m just flowing. It’s really too early to tell who I’ll be collaborating with.”
He also acknowledged that Untitled wasn’t an entirely solid record, and that he’s learned from his mistakes. “I don’t want to look back on this record – because I can look back on my last record and I know that record, some songs didn’t belong there. I really overthought it. I don’t want it to be like that on this record,” he continued. “I want to be able to play this next record after it’s done and feel like I did it. I have to do something that’s new. It’s just in me. I have to do something that feels like it’s right right now, and it could last.”

UPDATE: Nas has announced that the title of his 10th album will be Life is Good. It is currently unknown who will appear on the LP in regards to features and producers. HipHopDX will keep you updated.

Nas is one of my favorite MCs ever and in my opinion the nicest MC ever, but I got some concerns about this album. First off, Frank Ocean is wack. I don’t want Nas being inspired by ‘artists’ he’s a thousand times better than. And Drake is skilled, but he’s fuckin’ gay and corny. Secondly, EVERY TIME he makes an album, he looks back on it and says something like “I wasn’t really feeling that album”. It’s almost like Nas has the skills but doesn’t have the ear to know what sounds good and what doesn’t. He’s easily influenced by niggas in the studio. Nas…Just make the album YOU wanna make. Stop trying to satisfy all these different people, and cross-over to this genre and that genre, and send all these messages and shit. Keep it simple son, dope beats and dope rhymes. That’s all.

Untitled was a fucking classic by the way. Exactly the Nas album I’ve been waiting for, banging beats are kept to a minimum, more the melody type which fits Nas very well, damn, I feel that the lyrics still go over people’s heads. Hero was a nice change of pace and one of the best commercial tracks I’ve ever heard. ‘Everytime I close my lids, I can still see the borough, I can still the bridge’ Nas ripped that shit.

i don’t really get the OFWGKTA hate here though. as someone who hates Wayne and Drake as much as everyone else who has posted about their discontentment with Nas’ new inspirations, i actually think that, while Tyler’s new album was garbage overall, there’s a lot to be inspired by there. as an emcee myself, some of the things that OF has done has inspired me, though i still stick more to my underground roots than them.
Man I think its time we all faced facts that Nas has moved past the Illmatic days. As much as i would LOVE for him to collaborate with Q-tip, AZ, Premo, Pete Rock and Large Pro….its just not going to happen, ever. Nas is going to be lookin to dudes like Wayne and drake and Ross. That’s what you gotta love about Nas. He’s not predictable like most artists are. You never know where he’s coming from. At the end of last year he said he said he was feeling inspiration from the streets of New York. Now he’s saying he’s inspired by some new artists who I could care less for. A real confident artist is not afraid to acknowledge his peers. If you agree or not, it is refreshing to see an artist of Nas’ importance be inspired by others. It is called being gracious and self-effacing.

Nas is so unassuming and down to earth. He expresses his concerns and fears as any great artist should. Nas is gifted beyond belief but still questions his position, although his position is solid (top 5 DOA). I respect Nas as an artist who continues to evolve but does not take for granted what was given to him as a gift…HUMBLE! As an artist young or old, you should never just settle and think that your talent/skills are better than the rest. Regardless if the artist(s) are not on your level talent wise, you should always embrace what others/peers bring to hip hop. This is why Nas will still be around years from now because he is unpretentious but has the talent/skills to be just the opposite.

To tell you the truth I forget it was even there I mean I know the a handful of the songs but I didn’t get the cd like I usually would or download it atleast. And looking throuhg the tracks now I gotta say it was a good CD. I like the 80’s feel of the tracks with synths in them. Nas kills them 80s type tracks. Hope he does something like that. i.e Everybody wants to rule the world. etc. etc. etc. hes done it many times!

Here’s my honest opinion on Nas’s albums:
Illmatic – Classic, best Hip Hop album ever made.
It Was Written – Classic, 3rd best rap album of 1996 behind All Eyez On Me and Reasonable Doubt
I Am – Not my favorite but still a good album. DJ Premier produced songs are all classics.
Nastradamus – Terrible. His worst album. 2 or 3 good songs. Every genius has a misstep.
Stillmatic – Classic. Way better than the Blueprint and definitely the best hip hop album of 2001.
God’s Son – Classic. Not as good as the other 4 classics but still a classic. Most unique and personal album by Nas.
Lost Tapes – Classic. The most well written and complex Nas album.
Street’s Disciple – Trashy. Not great. 5 or 6 good songs but not much replay value.
Hip Hop Is Dead – Solid. A little commercial but it’s pretty good. Most songs have replay value.
Untitled – Good. A little too commercial on some of the beats and featured guests but still a solid album.
Distant Relatives – Great. One of the best Hip Hop albums of the year.
Life Is Good – ?
It surprises me that everyone thinks ‘Streets Disciple’ was weak. To me, thats a great album. His best album lyrically behind his first two. Going by the guests and the title of this album, I’d be surprised if it wasn’t his weakest album yet.
What happened to these niggas man? Nas and Mobb Deep. Seriously. And don’t give me that ‘they just grew up’ shit. Because it’d be one thing if their maturity was showing up in their music, but it isn’t. These niggas have no confidence in their own skills anymore. It’s like they’re trying to camouflage their artistic shortcomings through gimmicks, cliche guests appearances, stupid album titles, books, and everything else except just GOOD MUSIC. It can’t be that fuckin’ hard. I mean, they have access to state of the art equipment and studios. They can work with almost anyone they want at the drop of a hat, yet the quality of their work continues to falter. Hip-Hop is fuckin’ dead. Nas said it himself, yet he falls vic to the same bullshit as everyone else. As far as that legendary draftclass of NY MCs from the early to mid nineties, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Cormega and Jay-Z are probably the only ones that were able to lift or maintain the quality of their music for the most part. Nas has to be the most frustrating though, because he’s the best of all them. Nas is like the Manny Ramirez of Rap. He’s great, but you still feel like he never really gave his all. Like his heart was never really in it.
But dude has a limitless amount of quality material that ain’t necessary on these albums. There is actually alot more to Nas’s street catalogue than you might think and on those albums
I agree with Sensaye. I loved Street’s Disciple. Disc 1 itself is almost a classic. Disc 2 could’ve had two or three songs taken off but it was good too. Probably Nas’ most underrated album in his catalogue. I swear some people need their ears checked…
I Am is also underrated as fuck.

It Was Written and Stillmatic are classics, the only problem with IWW is that it came out after Illmatic, the greatest album of all time.

I truly think Nas should get Hi-tek on a few joints, him and statik selektah for that fresh 90’s sound, especially if he don’t get primeo.
Statik is that dude, he’s able to change that 90’s sounds a little to make clear it doesn’t sound like a copy or dated.
I think Nas should make “Life is Good” HIS OWN “Blood On the Tracks”, by Bob Dylan. I’m not saying he should pick up an acousitc guitar and harmonica, but I honestly can’t think of a better musical influence for Nas right now. Think about it. When Dylan made BOTT he was in his mid 30’s, was entrenched in bad circumstances from a failed marriage, was losing ground with fans who wanted him to return to his “roots”, and was trying to reconcile his other turmoils by reflecting what went wrong. Now pause and think about where Nas is in his life compared to Dylan:

I know one thing for sure, it’s gotta be damn difficult to be Nas right now. I mean he’s got all his hungry-ass-fans to feed & ofcourse it’s gotta be nothing less than heat, no commercial crap, no watered down material neither, he’s dealing with all kinda personal battles behind the scenes, trying to gain new fans at the same time, and kinda live up to the critically acclaimed album he just dropped w/Marley, THE PRESSURE!!! These things among others have certainly gotta be going through his mind, and it cant be easy. He’s got a lot of proving to do and can only accomplish it by digging REAL deep inside himself for this album. My only suggestion to Nas will be to PLEASE for the love of heaven and earth stay the hell away from Will-I-Am’s production, anything else I can forgive. I’m keeping my fingers crossed afterall he’s Nas for goodness sakes…
