Canadian rapper Drake had quite the night at yesterday’s (April 18) Juno Awards in St. John’s, Newfoundland. The actor turned rapper, who received four Juno Awards nominations, took home one of the night’s most sought after awards, Best New Artist.
Drake also performed with fellow Canadian and Best New Artist nominee Justin Bieber. Together the two artists performed a remix to Bieber’s immensely-popular song “Baby.”
“Me and my boy drake @drakkardnoir (canuck swag) are sitting beside each other at the Juno’s tomorrow night. Make #Canuckswag trending,” Bieber Tweeted before the awards show.
Other notable winners included Somali rapper K’Naan who took home the award for Artist of the Year and Michael Buble who took home both the Fan Choice Award and Pop Album of the year.
“I came here to Canada when I was 15-years-old from Somalia and I didn’t know what I was going to do to deal with my emotions and my past and my life,” said K’Naan while accepting his award. “Writing songs was just what I did to try and survive my own internal issues.”
At the Juno Awards, K’naan performed “Wavin’ Flag” alongside Drake, Justin Bieber, and Nikki Yanofsky.

No mention of the best rapper at the Juno’s, Classified, opening up the show with ‘Oh.. Canada’? That’s huge for hip hop in Canada. A few years ago the hip hop categories weren’t even presented at the show, and now were opening AND closing it.

Drake somehow won best rap album too, over three albums that were far far superior to So Far Gone.
Classified’s Self Explanatory, K’Naans Troubadour, and k-os’s Yes! were all some of the most critically acclaimed albums of the year.

Canada, in a way, has an inferiority complex. It gladly supports an artist should it get co-signed by some jackass from mainstream America. But if you’re a Canadian emcee, with no co-sign whatsoever, the chances are the Canadian music industry noticing you is slim-to-none. This goes the same for actors, artists and comedians.
But I got hope still. Despite not being a fan of Aubrey Drake, he, K’Naan, K-os and Kardinal are giving Canadian Hip Hop a face so that the world can recognize our music and actually pay attention to us. I pray that people do not disregard the emcees over here just ’cause certain artists are soft or whatever. Mind you, the emcees in T-dot and Canada are every bit as diverse and talented as it is in New York, Los Angeles or Atlanta.
