Ice Cube Responds To Tony Yayo’s Claim Biggie Was A Better Storyteller Than Him

Ice Cube has responded to comments made by Tony Yayo in a recent Drink Champs interview regarding The Notorious B.I.G. being a better storyteller than him.

In an interview with DJ Whoo Kid on Tuesday (July 11), the West Coast rap legend acknowledged Biggie’s brilliance, as well as the fact that everybody is entitled to their own opinion, but also reminded Yayo and others about his storytelling pedigree over the last 30-plus years — not just as an MC.

“It’s subjective,” Cube said. “Everybody got they favorites. I put my stories up against anybody and I have a bigger sample size. But at the end of the day, everybody is going to have their different opinion. I love Biggie, I’m a fan of Biggie.

“I’ve wrote records for Eazy and N.W.A. And look, when we talking about storytelling, are we talking about rhyming? Because I write movies too, so I’m a hell of a storyteller. I can tell a damn story. So are we just talking about rap? That’s only a portion of what I do.”

He concluded by saying: “Look, to be in that conversation, I’m winning already.”

Ice Cube’s response comes shortly after Tony Yayo and DJ EFN engaged in a spirited debate over who’s the better storyteller between Cube and Biggie during an episode of Drink Champs that aired this past weekend.

When EFN declared that Ice Cube was his pick, Yayo was in pure disbelief, asking the Drink Champs co-host if Cube had better verses than Biggie, to which he emphatically said: “Yeah.”

From there, after EFN said Ice Cube’s 1991 diss record, “No Vaseline” from Death Certificate, was better than Biggie’s 1997 track, “N-ggas Bleed,” off of Life After Death, chaos ensued.

“This is why I hate this industry shit,” the G-Unit solder said. “So you telling me Ice Cube is a better storyteller than Biggie? You fucking buggin’! You lost your fucking mind!”

The two men continued to debate over which artist reigned supreme before Yayo admitted that Cube was “fire.”

Meanwhile, Ice Cube recently opened up about the NBA’s alleged efforts to sabotage his BIG3 basketball league as he kickstarted his “Fuck The Gatekeepers Podcast Tour.”

The Hip Hop Hall-of-Famer joined The Joe Rogan Experience late last month, where he claimed that the NBA has attempted to influence potential sponsors and broadcast networks to not partner with his three-on-three league.

“We’re not trying to compete in any shape or form with the NBA. We’re very complimentary,” he said. “So I don’t understand the things that’s being done behind the scenes. Encouraging people to not sponsor us. Encouraging networks not to play us.”

Cube explained that his growing basketball league, which he launched in 2017, will have to fight back against the NBA’s alleged campaign for it to survive and thrive in the future.

“We’ve been able to survive but at a certain point it’s just redundant and ridiculous and we gotta fight back in some shape or form,” he added.

    3. NWA dayz,Solo projects frm ‘90 to ‘94 were “CLASSIC”,probably Is what made B.I.G wanted to Rap.So As Snoop has said in A verse on devin the dude Song “what A Job”,Cube birthed a lot of them early ‘90’s rap cats…

      1. Biggie was never inspired by Ice Cube. Instead, Biggie still inspires Ice Cube to be a better rapper to this day! Push rhymes like weights… That’s just wack!! Lol

      2. BIGGIE IMSPIRES CUBE TO RAP TIL THIS DAY….SMH!!! THAT IS A COMMENT FROM A SUPER WEIRDO!!! MAN CUBE GOT CATALOGS ON TOP OF CATALOGS ON TOP OF CATALOGS!!! HOW DARE YOU FIX YOUR MOUTH TO EVEN ATTEMPT TO SAY SUCH A THING!! FYI, BIGGIE IS 1 OF MY FAVS, BUT NO WAY OVER CUBE AND WHAT CUBE HAS DONE!! SMH!!

      3. You crazy in your head 🗣️ bro if you think biggie is better then cube biggie is great don’t get me wrong but Cube started this gangsta shit you better listen 👂 to his lyrics.

      4. Everybody and their grandma knows Ice Cube is a fake g. Just another studio gangster. He should stick to acting.

    4. Ice cube gatt da best in storytellin’ so is screw shit to compare him to big poppa thoo he gatt rhylirical rap stylist

    5. There is some merit to the argument that Ice Cube could be deemed the “greater” storyteller. Here the argument though. Though subjectivity always plays a role, let me first state that I believe it’s hard to argue Biggie is not the better rapper and lyricist….hands down. It’s hard to even make a subjectivity argument. Biggie’s rhymes and flow are just multiple levels above Ice Cube, and I think you can objectively listen to them and see with the timing and wordsmithing…that sometimes Cube doesn’t really have on point flow. I won’t belabor it. So as rappers, it’s almost an insult to suggest a comparison..it’s Biggie. HOWEVER, when it comes to just telling a story….Cube is amazing. You can visualize the story Cube is telling you and completely get it. There isn’t great complexity in how Cube tells his stories, but they are fun and you can see, feel and get into them. Cube hits you with that pitch and you’re in. You don’t have to concentrate too hard, and why should you? He is telling you a story about the hood and keeping it simple and straight you can see it and live it. Gangsta Gangsta, Dopeman, F…the police, the stuff he wrote for Eazy…his solo albums you can see and get down with it all. For me, he is probably the best.

Now Biggie is obviously an amazing storyteller too, N*ggas Bleed is an anthem. It is far more “refined” and complex than anything Cube has done that I can think of. I had to listen to it multiple times to get it all…but man…the visuals. 🙂

An argument they are on par for STORYTELLING is not unfair. Cube has a much larger library though, and for that reason I say you could argue he is the “greater” storyteller. I’m not saying better, but greater….just larger in status for that.

With Cube it’s simple and fun and he gets you amped up and smiling with the trash he talks. One of the greatest and one of my favorite rappers of all time. Doesn’t have to be the best technically, but you want a wild time, throw on some Cube.

If you want to go to battle, though, or talk about pure ability and skill as a rapper, Biggie is the man. Few are greater….

    6. To my knowledge Biggie only released 2studio albums right? He’s featured on plenty other artists records and there’s films and recordings of him rhyming on the streets before Diddy/BadBoy.Combine all those songs(let’s say 35-40)only about 14-20 maybe are stories,1/2 are freestyles and all are dope! But 1986-2023 Cube’s catalog is undeniably better than Big’s and 95% of HipHop ever. Biggie couldn’t write movies or even turn any of his own songs into a movie script 🤷🏾‍♂️. What would Yayo garbage ass know about good lyrics and stories anyway?!
