Hip Hop Album Sales: Week Ending 06/15/2014

Following a strong first week in the Top 5, 50 Cent’s Animal Ambition has dropped out of the Top 10 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums this week. Still, Animal Ambition remains the top Rap album on the chart. Michael Jackson’s Xscape has the top R&B album of the week and Iggy Azalea’s The New Classic is the third best Rap or R&B effort on the chart.

Elsewhere on the chart, Murs and MAYDAY! debuted on the chart with Mursday coming in at #45. The effort sold 8,024 units in its first week of availability. Ice-T’s Body Count also debuted on the chart this week with Manslaughter. The effort sold 3,624 units to land at #102.

Michael Jackson’s Xscape Rises To #9

Michael Jackson’s Xscape appears at #9 on the list. The album came up from #12 last week. The effort sold 24,861 units this week compared to 25,358 units last week. This was a 2 percent decrease in sales. This may not be the last of the posthumous Jackson albums, according to a recent Rolling Stone report. “Michael Jackson’s estate managed to bring the late star back to life, sort of, with an unnerving onstage pseudo-hologram at May 18th’s Billboard Music Awards – and that’s just the beginning of its ambitious plans for his career, which could include as many as eight more albums culled from outtakes and repackaged material,” the Rolling Stone report says.

    50 Cent’s Animal Ambition Falls To #15

50 Cent’s Animal Ambition has fallen to #15 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Animal Ambition sold 17,118 copies this week, a 63 percent decrease in sales from more than 46,600 units sold last week. Overall, 50 has sold 63,846 copies of the album. 50 Cent recently spoke on his expectations regarding sales. “I know I can’t actually have the success I’ve had in the past,” 50 Cent said. “It’s impossible…This is the warm up…I put this record out to cut through the cloud of my audience’s mind, success. Some people are not conditioned or prepared for success. And it’s an adjustment. If you leave the environment thinking the exact same way you were in the environment chances are you won’t be successful. You have to make some adjustments as you actually go. Inquiring new information. Being exposed to different situations is what allows me to continue to do it, but if you don’t do it you’ll forget about it. The people, they’re gon’ bring you back. They gonna pull you back.” This wasn’t the only 50 Cent album on the Billboard Top 200 this week. The rapper’s debut album, Get Rich Or Die Tryin’, also made the list, selling 2,229 units to come in at #199. Overall, 50 has sold 8,271,176 copies of the effort.

Iggy Azalea’s The New Classic Falls Out Of Top 20

Iggy Azalea’s The New Classic earns the #22 spot on this list. The album sold 14,781 units this week, a 16 percent decrease in sales from 17,599 units last week. Overall, The New Classic has moved 177,983 units. In October 2013, Azalea spoke with DX about the effort. “The New Classic is me trying to experiment with new sounds as much as I can in the environment that I’m in,” he said at the time. “It’s me trying to think about the sounds I hear in music now and which ones will stick around. I’m thinking about what will be the sound of our generation, Hip Hop and sampling, and Electronic music versus old Soul records and Blues music. I’m thinking about how [the term] classic can evolve throughout the eras. Look at how classic has evolved in art to the point where we have all these classic eras. I think we’ll have different eras in Hip Hop, and what’s sonically classic in this generation may be sampled 20 years from now. What if they want to re-do our sound? It’s the type of thing that makes you question why we’re so nostalgic for different eras. Why do we think other eras are so great and get stuck in this mentality of, ‘It was so great then, and what we have now is complete shit?’ I tried to think about sending a time capsule to the future with my reflection of all the things I think are the coolest now.”

      1. lol AA was just a warm up … and Mastermind was major … AA was independent .. Ross doesn’t even have nearly the numbers 50 have … so don’t compare a legend to a fake fat ass

      2. No one was talking about total sales. In today’s sales, mastemrind outsold AA and will do it again with Street King of Dick Sucking Immortal.

      3. Only thing Rozay is winning is a pie eating contest ya dig?

        Check the scoreboard!

Fat boy has his own label of rappers. An alcohol endorsement. Ciroc endorsement. 20 Wing Stops. A Reebok deal… and he still made the same as Mac Miller last year who is a 21 year old white jewish independent rapper.

        BOSS!

    1. #15. 50 Cent – Animal Ambition – 17,118 (63,846)

thats even better than i expected for a gangster rapper in 2014 who released every track in advanced

    2. nigga said rozay winning hard lol

put all of rozay album sales together from all his albums including the selfmade series and it still dont even match the first week sales of The Massacre…

      1. No one was comparing total sales though. The fact is that Ross won over 50 with their latest albums. Ross won’t match 50 cent’s total sales in today climate.

    3. Just a warm up to what, an album that has been delayed for 4 years? lol Ross still outsold him, so regardless of how much they personally pocket off these projects, Ross is still more popular at this moment.

      1. He’s losing weight so he won’t have them much longer. He’s getting healthy. Ross still won.

    4. SKI up next followed by new G-Unit album in November.

You see 50 can put out 3 independent “flops” in 5 months and make more than your favorite major label rapper who sold 5x that. He’s getting that tech n9ne indie money.

    5. Sales

Rick Ross sold 220k in his first two weeks
50 Cents sold 63k in his first two weeks

      Critic Reviews(according to metacritic)

      Mastermind – 70
      Animal Ambition- 53

      Hot 100 Charts

      Rick Ross – 2 songs
50 Cent – 0 songs from the album

50 Cent took that L once again just like them NY niggas , I ain’t making up shit , 50 Cent lost to the OG Ross and These are facts that you fuck ass 50 dickriders gotta accept .

      1. Wow dude thats amazing. Now lets comnpare who classics. Lets compare total career sales. Lets compare Plaques! Lets compare plaques.

      2. Lets talk about how Ricky been out since 06 and still ain’t got one platinum record.

Lets talk about how The Massacre sold more than everyone on MMG put together.

      3. That nigga could sell 20 million records but he’s still an obese fraud who lied to all his fans about his past because he was ashamed.

I’m gonna listen to the nigga who didn’t search his black brothers assholes for the drugs he raps about selling. I’m gonna listen to the nigga who didn’t steal another man’s identity and beard and fail to acknowledge him or pay homage!

I could care less whos selling more records at this period in time. I know Ross still hasn’t matched what 50 did in 2003 career wise and as far as impact and influence on the rap game Ross is nothing next to Curtis.

There’s only so long fake thugs can pretend.

      4. Ross had 1 song on the hot 100 and as he said above it was at 86 and only because of Jay-Z. No surprise that his only other single that did anything was a Lil Wayne feature.

Smoke went No. 1 in Germany!

      5. Sanctified is a Kanye west song with a Ross verse on it. 5 mintute song and Ross is on it for 45 seconds LOL whens the last time he made a decent song without a big name?

      1. Should reach 100k no prob. Then SKI might sell 150k and a G-Unit album can sell 100k and hes laughing to the bank. 3 indie albums in 5 months! He teaching yall how to hustle.

    6. ” The rapper’s debut album, Get Rich Or Die Tryin’, also made the list, selling 2,229 units to come in at #199. Overall, 50 has sold 8,271,176 copies of the effort.”

WHOA does this mean that 50 Cent’s old shit selling more than Ricky’s new shit. Who’s winning again??

Still moving 2300 copies 11 years later thats crazy. I wonder what Port of Miami sold this week. LMFAO.

      1. Comparing sales to Officer Ricky makes the flop feel better, we should compare sale to LiL B also.

    7. 50 cent has said he’s going for a run for the title of New York’s finest again. If that title holds weight he’s interested in holding it down for a season or two. He’s funded, and he’s reloaded, most likely not done reloading. He’s got a multi-stage plan and gets to unfold it like RZA did with the Wu. If his music can gain traction in the right places he will succeed. I think he went for the streets with Animal Ambition. Not full kilter, but in terms of balance. Leading off with Funeral music and Hold on, then some money in the visuals for alliances with Mobb Deep, and the Lox.

He barely showed up for the women’s anthem Smoke.

    8. Way too many 50 butthurt stans, mad that animal ambition didn’t outsell rosss, started to point out past albums like massacre. So what, MJ outsold 50, doesn’t mean i bitch like you.

    9. 50 is the king of L’s. Ross is kicking 50’s ass and his former proteg, game, is now part of ymcmb. Feminem and Dr Dre wanted him no more and no one else would take him. Power is flopping hard and AA is getting panned. He’s finished.

      1. You got everything backwards. 50 is kicking Ross’ ass, Game isn’t signed to YMCMB, Power is succeeding, and AA is not getting panned. This is the beginning for 50.

    10. 63k indie just a distribution deal not a recording contract

50 made about half a million in 2 weeks ross wont see that from mastermind ahaha

      1. they don’t know the difference because they’re new jacks in the game….50 is indie, dum azzez….

      2. He still kicks back 20-30% for that distribution deal, not to mention other related expenses. Macklemore made millions because he had #1 singles. How the fuck do you think 50 is making that kind of bread when all of his singles flopped and the album is flopping? Who cares what Ross does? He still sold 300k despite the worst WOM ever.

    11. 63,846 (Units Sold) X $10.50 (Price Of CD)= $670,383. If thats a flop on a independent then i think every rapper should go indie. to not even sell 100,000 units and still get that much money. wait till SKI come out.

      1. He himself said before it beeing out already that he had already recouped it from his digital presales…
Lol I didn’t know you work @ the Gunit office to know his expenses. Niggas so funny online.

      2. He didn’t generate that lol Seriously this bullshit needs to stop. 63k doesn’t equal $670,000 on any known day of the week. If that was remotely possible all your favorite major label stars would be flocking to indie labels for distribution deals. We’ve already covered what it takes to make paper as an indie artist. #1 hits like Macklemore. Sponsors like Mac Miller. 365 days a year touring like Tech Nine. A cheap looking billboard and bundle options don’t go that far lol

    12. 50 cent fans be mad because Rick Ross outsold his ass ahahhahahahahahhahahahahahhahahaha you fuck bois and your favorite faggot rapper are finished . Whatever Ross puts out is going gold MMG winning all day errday !!!

      1. Yeah, Ross didn’t outsell 50 at all. Not all of Ross’ albums go gold (Mastermind won’t go gold at all) and MMG is losing, not winning.

      2. Leave Ross out of this, lets just state the fact that Game outsold Curtis and Game didnt drop a hundred videos desperately looking for a hit single.

      3. Game was on a major label. He had interscope behind him and about 33 features from most of the big names in the business. i think he had the whole dirty south on there too.

    13. all you fools talking about 50 getting outsold/ not selling. what you fail to realize is that he gave away all the music with videos before the album dropped.

    14. 50 flopped horribly and he purchased about 10K of his own album, all that money wasted on promotion and he wont even sell 100k, dude fell off bad worse than any rapper over the span of 5 album’s. His stans will blame this failure on Interscope because its obvious that Curtis cant sellrecords without Jimmy Iovine and Eminem.

      1. “dude fell off bad worse than any rapper over the span of 5 album’s”

Look up Ja Rule, Fat Joe, Cam’ron and Game!

      2. Look up Nelly too! 50 still doing better than most of them and Game is about to have the flop of his life now that hes indie.

      3. JaRule first 5 albums didnt have a 99 percent drop in sales neither did Nelly, look up the stats numbers dont lie.

      4. Pain is Love went 3x plat in 2001, 5 or 6 albums later in 2012 he’s selling 3200 first week and less than 7000 total i 2 year.

Nelly went 9x plat in 2000 with Country Grammar but in 2013 M.O. only sold 15 000 first week and 23 000 total!

50 still doing better than most of the niggas he came up with and he’s indie so hes getting paid. Plus he’s accomplished so much more outside of music so he’s a few albums behind them.

      5. Ja Rule actually sold 400k of PIL2 so far.

50 ain’t doing better than most. Ross kicked his ass again. Just like he did in 2009.

      6. u dum hatin ass fool.. what u talkin shit for.. if u hav a problem wid his sales go buy da album.. and increase his sales.. instead of bitch talkin on da internet..

    15. 50 Cent takes another flop to his name

50 Cent the flop star;s next single is set to be titled ….. “The L’s master”- ft Jay Z , Nas and the rest of the NY dudes .

    16. No one cared about his album, so he reunited with G-Unit who he spent months talking ish about, to try and create a buzz. That didn’t work so what is he going to do for his next album, reunite with Game or make out like him and Ja Rule are besties?

50 played himself. It’s over. If your a 50 Cent fan take a long hard look in the mirror.

    17. 50s old shit selling more than most rappers new shit! 2300 copies of GTODT sold 11 years later!!!!! how many albums did Fat Joe sell this week? Cam? Ja Rule? Game? yeah thats what I thought.

      1. Ask yourself how many years it took Curtis to release Animal Ambition. The songs sound mad dated, and last time time I checked Ja Rule had been in prison, and Fat Joe was battling tax problems, yet still releases singles, and imports.

    18. Why are so many people honestly so deluded? So just cause 50 Cent sold 65k in 2 weeks that makes him a flop?

He owns multi million businesses, has had more hits then any rappers your mates with can think of and earns more in one minute than you earn a week!

The problem with internet know it alls is they think success and wealth is based on music only, why do you think Dre, Diddy, Jigga and 50 are the wealthiest cunts in hip hop? Cause they think outside the square! So next time you call someone a flop, make it the dumb rapper that’s broke and is relying on sales to pay his bills. Not the dude worth 100 milli who has setup multiple income streams off his success in music! Too many rookies up in this shit…

      1. Game was on a major label. He had interscope behind him and about 33 features from most of the big names in the business. i think he had the whole dirty south on there too.

YMCMB is not a minor or independent label.

      2. wheres your proof?

the only hits 50 had outside of the gunit camp were magic stick that ciara song and that jeremih song

he had two with game, two with g unit, one with tony yayo, one with banks, one with mobb deep and i guess you could count let me in with young buck

aside from that its all solo singles

    19. “This wasn’t the only 50 Cent album on the Billboard Top 200 this week. The rapper’s debut album, Get Rich Or Die Tryin’, also made the list, selling 2,229 units to come in at #199. Overall, 50 has sold 8,271,176 copies of the effort”

^ this is it right here

this just happened with eminem, just happened with justin timberlake, just happened with MJ, albums sell way longer than you morons’ attention spans

yet you f-ckboys see hitsdailydouble predictions and 1st week results as the final tally, sit here and go back & forth like horny little girls talking about how better their boyfriend is

these “sales” conversations have become nothing but a cancer to hip hop, 50 taught y’all well, look at how much of a professor you are about the music industry on wednesdays

      1. exactly

black eyed peas 5 years ago spent like 40 weeks straight top10 and went 3x plat in 2 years, might be wrong but their 1st week was 280k, that was a failure for them said the critics, but the album is 11m worldwide

new 50 ain’t nowhere like that but it’s already looking like 100k more than 35k, which was perceived as 5k

dudes on here calling flops and talking expenses while asking mommy for pizza money, sh#t ain’t adding up, they looking mentally ill caused by social media

      2. that part hit home huh? mommy must have said no, lol

y’all learned that sales talk from 50 cent, I have no problem talking about 50 cent because I was never a 50 cent fan, I’m a music lover, long enough to know lot of y’all size up next to what’s hot, you ain’t no true listeners

    20. When 50 cent was at his peak he said get rich or die tryin sold 13million records. This article said 8 million something so the other 5 million must have sold in foreign countries. Even at his peak he didn’t sell all these albums in the US. It was like half/ and half. Half US half overseas. We aren’t even getting into singles yet, but if albums are still selling 10yrs later this dude is selling more than you guys realize even now. How many itune singles has his albums sold?, how many iTunes singles from animal ambition has been sold? Has animal ambition sold anything in other countries yet? What are his masters, publishing, royalty rates like for past albums and this album ?

      1. insight would be animal ambition is domestic release only, studio album usually mean international release

the reality is we are questioning the ignorant online jargon of immature individuals, because they are the ones who were taught this way to define success and failure by…………50 cent

I’m willing to bet many of these wednesday recording industry execs commenting on hhdx don’t know a thing about royalties, publishing, budgets, press and distribution deals, contracts, hell, how do we even know they listen to rap music at all?

      2. Let’s say he sold 12k in singles off the new album. That’s not enough. Having money doesn’t mean a flop stings less. About the only impressive thing is digitally he’s held up better than expected. In the end though the #’s are still going to be way below his standards, so call it like it is.

      3. ^you’re “enough” don’t mean sh#t because you ain’t nowhere to be found during the proceedings, business, or payouts to determine feast or failure

you ain’t even man enough to admit that, f#ck makes you think I believe what you say

    21. ross cant even make a good song without someone featured on the track with him..these idiot people out here like compilation albums instead of true solo album without a bunch of famous features..stupid new generation

    22. “new 50 ain’t nowhere like that but it’s already looking like 100k more than 35k, which was perceived as 5k”

If he was at 100k right now I’d say he proved he could still exist in today’s hip hop market, but he fell the fuck off nearly 64% lol That means the curiosity wore off and he’s got maybe 2 weeks left to make whatever he’s going to make.

      1. the point is it doesn’t matter when you think it should be 100k it is nearing 100k regardless of you

got the 1st summer holiday right around the corner, the money about to come out, shows scheduled, parties and beaches upcoming

rozay gonna get some of that money too why you thinking it’s over for 50? ‘happy’ will be played to death this summer, macklemore & lewis will see a summer spike

this is how much you hating dawg

      2. 64-65% is the average drop off from the first week to the second

look at 98% of rappers first and second week sales

    23. “50 still doing better than most of the niggas he came up with and he’s indie so hes getting paid. Plus he’s accomplished so much more outside of music so he’s a few albums behind them”

Why isn’t Eminem or Drake indie if all you need to do is sell 63K in two weeks? As 4 Ja Rule, he’s starred in a fair share of movies. Point is he’s not hurting for money.

    24. “reach 100k no prob. Then SKI might sell 150k and a G-Unit album can sell 100k and hes laughing to the bank. 3 indie albums in 5 months! He teaching yall how to hustle”

Might lol Could lol You have a solid future in PR work.

    25. “Wow dude thats amazing. Now lets comnpare who classics. Lets compare total career sales. Lets compare Plaques! Lets compare plaques”

      Ok. Ross – 1 (Trilla)
      50 (1) Get Rich

      Current status… GFID (Gold)

      Street King (delayed 4 years)
Animal Ambition (63k in 2 weeks lol)

Bank accounts aside, 50 is done. Accept the truth or be a slave to the lies.

      1. Define classic to me. I still here ppl playing grodt from here to Alabama. Ain’t nobody playing Rick Ross. I only remember one song and that’s hustlin.. I can tell you that feelin when in da club first came on. The dj had to play that sh@t at least ten times. I remember Mofo got into a bang out with other Mofo off that sh&t. Sorry to tell you Rick Ross will never move the crowd like that.

      2. they jumped the question, used faulty stats and ended with a bias opinion

those are bookworm tactics, not hip hop lover actions

      3. lmao the foxnews of the hhdx comments section

it took trilla 7 years to go platinum and trilla is FARRRRR from classic

Classic means a near flawless album…50 has one ross has none…teflon don and deeper than rap were the closest but they were not classics

grodt sold more albums than ross did his entire career….

    26. I’m reading all these dummies talking about 50 is finished because of his album sales. He still better than half the BS that’s out. I want all you idiots to understand stand something. Just cause you didn’t buy the album I’ll bet you a million Mofo downloaded that sh@t for free. It’s all about who you listen to. If rakim, Nas, Jay z or any other rapper I listen to puts out a album I like I’m buying. Who gives a F about there album sales. Last time I checked owning your publishing and distribution and making $7 off a album is better than making $1.

      1. But if you aren’t relevant then all the money in the world means nothing. That’s what this boils down to. Regardless of how much he nets from Ambition, it’s not changing the way people think about him in 2014.

      2. and what people think due to their emotional morality don’t mean it’s genuine because those same people are hypocrites with their lives and mantra

be a man and admit you a hater you’ll sleep better

    27. “rozay gonna get some of that money too why you thinking it’s over for 50? ‘happy’ will be played to death this summer, macklemore & lewis will see a summer spike”

Technically it’s been over for years, but stubborn Curtis Jackson wanted to release Animal Ambition so he could see for himself. As for Pharell, Happy should have propelled his album to bigger numbers, but he’s still doing better than Ross/50.

    28. “because you ain’t nowhere to be found during the proceedings, business, or payouts”

I never said he wouldn’t make something, but other than desperate bundle deals, how exactly is 50 going to see major paper off this? None of his singles went to #1, or spent significant time on the charts. He’s not touring. The album fell over 60% in week two. Oh, then there’s those pesky fucking bastards at EMI who want 30% back. You better start calling me master with factual darts like this.

      1. who was the last rapper has to see MAJOR paper off of their album?

maybe jay with that samsung deal…maybe eminem n drake

but most artists dont see more than a couple hundred thousand if they go platinum…

      2. rapper to see*

and he signed a DISTRIBUTION deal…captiol/emi only DISTRIBUTES the album they didnt pay for the making of the album

      1. dude you the type to side with a pedophile lottery winner with a meth problem & a 4 tooth hoe in tow to make brittle because he got a check

slither back into retirement, even the f#ckboys don’t respect your f#ckboy

    29. Animal ambition is a worldwide release cause i saw that animal ambtion was #21 on the UK charts last week. These numbers are US only. 50 is eating you can stop hating.

      1. Yeah, exactly. Anytime you see sales numbers, they’re only talking about the US. So yeah, he’s definitely selling even more across the globe.

    30. So, seems there’s this one commenter here, named “Anonymous,” who’s really batshit crazy about 50 Cent, amirite? Next!

    31. am i the only one who remembers that almost all the songs were released before the album dropped? name a rapper other than em who could crack 100k after doing that! the nigga just made some money off what was suppose to be a free mixtape…. low key features, beats from no name producers! nigga just used this shit to generate some funds to pump into ski, dont hate blindly i know u see what he’s doing so stop pretending

    32. Beside Eminem, Justin Timberlake, Pharrel, and John Legend these sales are weak as fuck. Im shocked major labels still exist. How are they making money if they don’t have multiple artist selling multi-platinum albums? They must be getting that itunes money or somethin. This shit is comical.

    33. “slither back into retirement, even the f#ckboys don’t respect your f#ckboy”

Rest assured your bitch certified, and each time you think about responding to me, think twice. Your a sad, pathetic, welfare ridden piece of flaming shit who responds with so much anger. Did your step dad’s blows really hurt that bad? You can pretend you get respect on here. I’ll continue getting it in the real world where it counts.

    34. “and what people think due to their emotional morality don’t mean it’s genuine”

Thank you Dr. Phil. That was beyond deep. Too bad you work at a gas station.

    35. rapper to see*

and he signed a DISTRIBUTION deal…capitol/emi only DISTRIBUTES the album they didnt pay for the making of the album

    36. how I’m on welfare but work at a gas station? lmfao

if no one respects your thoughts online they don’t in real time because YOU STILL HAVE THE SAME MENTALITY, you ain’t fooling nobody you don’t know wtf you’re talking about, that “educated” nonsense you be reciting don’t resemble what people with experience go thru

all that welfare, dead end job, stepdad blows, “angry blackman” talk only shows us the white in you, you came in here thinking you were superior, entitled, and everyone would believe you and a blackman online not only knows more but is sharper than you, QUOTE-MAN

      pussy

      1. You live for these battles which is sad. Don’t you get tired of portraying the angry black man? At least Samuel L. gets paid millions to do it.

    37. “You just described yourself right now. No one cares about you in the real world”

      Your mom does.

    38. “but most artists dont see more than a couple hundred thousand if they go platinum”

And you can back this up with what again?

      1. he pulls his facts out of his ass just like you quoteman. you dont know shit about the music biz either but you always frontin like you do.

      2. Notice how the record label gets 63% and he owns the label so majority of the money goes to 50.

      3. hiphopdx deleted my link

type in “who gets paid music sales the root” into google and you’ll see the breakdown

    39. 50 Cent’s Animal Ambition 2nd Week Global Album Sales

50 Cent’s fifth studio album, Animal Ambition sold 25,000 copies globally in it’s second week in stores. The album is now at two week total sales of 90,000 worldwide. These numbers shouldn’t be confused with the album’s national sales; it is at a total sales of 63,000 copies in America alone. I see the album selling at least a quarter of a million copies worldwide in total.

      1. No half a man. I actually use facts to back up my excellent analysis. It’s not my fault you just don’t have the mind capacity to grasp this stuff.
