Hip Hop Album Sales: Logic’s “Everybody” Debuts At #1 On Billboard 200

Logic is presumably on cloud nine after learning his third official studio album, Everybody, has just hit the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 albums chart for the week ending May 11. His rabid fanbase has clearly come out in droves to support their favorite rapper’s latest endeavor and now the Maryland native has the sales to back it up. Kendrick Lamar’s critically acclaimed fourth studio album, DAMN., has stayed consistent and is holding steady in the third spot while Brother Ali’s All The Beauty In This Whole Life and Russ’ debut There’s Really A Wolf make their entrances.

Logic Earns First #1 Of His Career

Logic’s Everybody marks the biracial rapper’s first #1 album of his career. The album sold 247,000 equivalent album units in the week ending May 11 and 196,000 of those were traditional album sales, according to Nielsen Music. All three of Logic’s studio albums have cracked the Top 10 — The Incredible True Story hit #3 in 2015 and Under Pressure hit #4 in 2014. Logic’s Bobby Tarantino mixtape peaked at #12 in 2016. Everybody also marks his best sales week ever, surpassing his previous first-week high of 135,000 album-equivalent units sold by The Incredible True Story.

Kendrick Lamar Still Holds The Bronze

After blowing the chart out of the water last month and debuting at #1, Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. takes a 22 percent dive and lands in the third spot. Coupled with his fans’ steady support, powerful singles such as “HUMBLE.” and “DNA.” have kept the album afloat. Song from the project were streamed 128,571,339 times in the past week and the album has already been certified platinum.

Russ Debuts In The Top 10

Russ’s inaugural solo studio album, There’s Really A Wolf, debuts at #7 after selling 23,745 copies and collecting 34 million streams in its first week. The 24-year-old rapper’s “Losin Control” single is currently at #68 and rising after 10 weeks on the Hot 100 chart.

Brother Ali Celebrates The Beauty Of Making The List

Brother Ali’s new album, All The Beauty in This Whole Life, his first since 2012’s Mourning In America and Dreaming In Color, debuts at #125. The Rhymesayers Entertainment staple has been relatively quiet over the past five years and his entrance onto the chart seems to allude that he was missed. The album sold 5,673 units and was streamed 865,519 times in its first week.

    Wale Loses His Luster

Wale’s Shine album saw a 55 percent decline since its debut and is now sitting at #45 in its second week. The D.C. native’s fifth studio album, however, still managed to collect 13,195,954 streams.

    1. logic is actually a good rapper in my opinion he is top 5 rapper of his genertion 1-kendrick 2-j.cole 3-joey badass 4-logic 5-old drake

      1. Logic’s heart is in the right place, but copies the sound of the day from more popular rappers too much too often. Plus while he can rap pretty fast and got some good punch lines, he’s no where on your top three’s level when it comes to lyricism. Regardless, he’s not bad, and congrats to him for getting his first #1.

        1. Who doesn’t sound like they copy other rappers. There’s been thousands of rappers. What are the odds people don’t sound the same? And why does top 3 even come up? All you listen to is 3 rappers? Dude’s been on the scene for a few years and you want to compare him to the greats? People can’t just listen and be happy, I swear.

          1. I was referring to Andre’s top three, you know, the guy I responded to? And there is something to be said about rappers influencing each other and evolving their sounds from one another. The problem with Logic is that his material sounds uncomfortably close in subject matter, production, flow, etc., to his contemporaries. So rather than, let’s say, the evolution of gangster rap from Ice-T to NWA, Logic to his contemporaries is sometimes more like Desiigner to Future. Straight biter. Seriously though, did you just read like one sentence from me completely out of context and responded to that out of context?

            1. i have a problem with that whole assessment. when does being influenced by another MC you admired for years is biting? throughout history, everybody has been inspired by at least one person to create art. being influenced doesn’t mean you are biting. nas was influenced by kool g rap and rakim but he made his style his own. jay-z was influenced by BIG and kane. em influenced by Pac (in terms of rebelliousness in his rhymes) Redman, and AZ (early in his career). the point is that there is a line drawn between inspiration and emulation. logic falls in the former. you can tell his influences are twista and bone and that’s due to his delivery and flow. even on this album, he harmonizes a lot. definitely a BONE influence in this kid. kendrick as well. his influences are Nas and Pac of course but he makes it his own. That’s being influenced by his heroes. Everybody is influenced by someone and adds that to their art, but it’s up to the artistic talent within the artist to make it his own

        2. Huge logic fan here, your comment is definitely on point. Dude is great but you really get the feeling he’s kind of unoriginal. He’s copied some of kendricks old flows for under pressure and copied some of drakes old flows for finding forever. Either way mad props and love to him, way to hit that #1! Coulda been some bullshit but instead a decent artist got it.

      1. Hmmm. I guess you deep in the hood trappin’ and carrying guns listening to drug music all day. GTFOH.

      2. There is a rapper called Illogic, been around for 2 decades. You should check him out, he’s a great artist.

      3. huge generalization. i am from the hood and i like logic. logic can rap his ass off. dude is nice. illogic is probably good but that’s the problem with him. nobody hasn’t heard of him. sometimes those who are nice don’t get the limelight. that’s just the way it is. but it still doesn’t mean logic isn’t nice on that mic. come on, you are telling me this kid isn’t nice on the mic. you are lying if you say he isn’t. and i love that album. even better than kendrick’s. i listened to that logic album five times over. really great album. kendrick’s is hot too but something about it didn’t bring me like how To Pimp A Butterfly did. It’s a good album though but not his best…..everybody need to cut this BS about only being hood equates to skill on the mic. what a load of crap. come on, that’s nonsense. so what he doesn’t look all hood. a lot of MC’s back in the days weren’t hood and they were some of the greatest rappers of all time. Your view needs to be more broad

    2. Well done. Still gonna have ppl on here talking shit about how he mentions being biracial and all that. He’s legit, raps about his experience, and if you don’t like it you don’t really need to listen because he’s not on the radio non-stop like some of the dumb shit. Congratulations to the man, he deserves it.

    3. This is what Logic and so many other people are up against. Why Hip Hop DX do you find it necessary to indicate that Logic is biracial? You never mention anything about any other rapper being biracial (Drake). By the way, the album is bananas!

      1. Maybe because that was Logic’s entire album? He wanted people to realize that he wasn’t a white rapper, but a mixed-race man who struggled with racism, too. Did you even listen to him?
