Gucci Mane recently sat down with radio host Rickey Smiley for an episode of the Ricky Smiley Morning Show where he was asked about Eminem being dubbed the “King of Rap.” The 1017 Records boss was almost in disbelief that question even entered his atmosphere.
“You gotta come up with a better one,” he says in the clip. “That ain’t even worth … ’cause I ain’t playin’ him in my car. You playin’ him in yours? You slidin’ around playin’ Eminem in your car with your old lady? Dolo play Eminem, just metaphors. Just goin’ in? [Laughs].”
Despite Gucci’s dismissive attitude toward Slim Shady, Em’s most recent album, Kamikaze, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 upon its release with roughly 434,000 total album equivalent units sold in its first week.
Conversely, Gucci’s 2017 El Gato: The Human Glacier album peaked at No. 28 while this year’s Evil Genius — which was released on December 7 — was projected to sell 54,000 to 59,000 total album equivalent units in its first week.

Eminem is undeniably talented. That being said, that talent hasn’t always translated to great tracks or great records. I get that some people want to etch him in to the Mt Rushmore of MCs, to each their own. That being said, Em hasn’t made a high caliber front to back album since 2002. He’s had some amazing songs here and there, but no full projects that I would call classic. Even Jay-Z still made Black Album and American Gangster when his prime was clearly behind him, but Em seems to struggle with balancing good lyricism with good production and the end result is always corniness and nonsensical lyrics. Plus Eminem is a cucked out liberal soy boy, so there’s that. Kanye gets it, he is the king of rap. MAGA.

I can see that that the comment section is bitterly divided into two here. I’m an Eminem fan, I like his music. But I’ve listened to Gucci’s as well. You can’t compare the two, it’s impossible. They’re on different sides of rap. Gucci’s is a very relaxing, slow, and pleasant to listen to melodic rap (although, he can be fast if he wants to). Eminem’s is a very speedy intense kind with hard-to-catch wordplay that gets you pumped up (although, he can be slow if he wants to). Both aim for very different ecosystem.
In defense of Eminem:
To all those hating on him, you probably haven’t listened to him, or you have but just caught on one of his not-so-great raps, or maybe you don’t like him at all, whatever the hell floats your boat. To clarify, Eminem’s beats aren’t the best in the game, but they’re nowhere near bad. Although his album Revival did have terribly broken beats, he’s improved in Kamikaze significantly. And yes, he hates his mom. Or at least, HATED his mom. He’s apologized to his mother for talking shit about her in his previous raps, saying he was, at the time, angry and wasn’t seeing straight. Their relationship has improved now. His rise to fame and old rug addictions had damaged his ties with his single mom
In defense of Gucci:
I don’t know much about Gucci’s past as I am not a diehard fan (still a fan though). But his music’s good. It’s very very far from terrible stuff like Takeshi 6ix9ine’s songs (sorry to his fans reading this, I just don’t like him). It’s very melodic, a good way to take a breather after listening to Eminem’s fiery raps. The lyrics are much more meaningful compared to the average “rapper” these days too.

Eminem’s music post Relapse really nailed home just how much Dr. Dre played a part in his musical direction. He has not been able to make a solid album without his contribution. His music now actually sounds like his stuff pre Dr. Dre if you go back and listen to Infinite and the Original Slim Shady LP before Dr. Dre signed him.
I used to have Em in my Top 5 all time but to be honest he has regressed musically while becoming savant level in technical skill. There’s only soo much lyrical miracle you can take. I don’t think he really ever learned how to make a great song on his own.
