It would be an understatement to say that hip hop has come a long way. There was a time when the only way you could hear rap was at a block party or in a park in the South Bronx. Now, rap is one of the most popular genres of music and is now an influence on those other genres.
Grandmaster Flash, one of hip hop’s fore fathers, has essentially been there since the beginning, leaving his imprint along the way. Flash is one of hip hop’s most influential deejays. He is often credited for making turntables into an instrument and developing the switch that allows deejays to listen to one turntable while cuing up the second. Flash went on the anchor the legendary group, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Four.
Last week Grandmaster Flash had the opportunity to showcase his skills in front of his largest crowd yet. Flash performed at the closing ceremonies for the Common Wealth Games in Manchester, England. Aside from performing in front of the Prime Minister and the Queen, Flash’s performance was witnessed by an estimated one billion people. Few are more deserving of such an opportunity.
