Freeway has tearfully reflected on The Jacka’s untimely passing and said the rapper’s death very much still affects him to this day.

The Jacka was shot and killed in Oakland, California on February 2, 2015 as reported by CBS San Francisco, with witnesses claiming they heard multiple gunshots fired at approximately 8:45 pm PST on MacArthur Boulevard by 94th Street in Oakland.

As a member of The Mob Figaz, Jacka collaborated with C-Bo, Messy Marv, San Quinn and Berner, among others, during his career, which started in the 1990s. The year prior to his murder, The Jacka released the Highway Robbery album with Freeway.

During an interview with Vlad TV, Freeway reflected back to the time he met Jacka, and said they connected almost immediately.

“Great brother, with a great heart man,” Freeway recalled. “Give you the shirt off his back.”

He continued, “I remember this thing called Sound Exchange where we’d get paid for our music and Jacka owned his music, and I don’t own all my music. So I remember we was together and we got a check around the same time. My check was $20,00 his check was like $200,000. I’m like, ‘what the fuck am I doing wrong?’ He like ‘I own my shit n-gga!’…it’s a lot of hustle and a lot of grit out that Bay area man and I love it and I would go out there and get with him and make $20,000 before I even get to the room.”

Freeway then spoke about his last trip to the U.K. he did with Jacka, and held back tears as he reflected on Jacka’s energy at that time, and that he felt he had really “mastered what we do.”

“The space that he set in he was just so comfortable,” Freeway recalled, “and the music was just so fucking amazing man and when we were out there they just fucking loved him, and he was playing that shit for them n-ggas and they was going crazy.”

He continued, “Just the space that he was in man I would have loved to see him live more. I’m telling you man. It’s rough really. His death effected me more than n-ggas I grew up with that died. That’s how his heart is.”

The Jacka’s first posthumous record MurderWeapon dropped in 2020, serving as the follow-up to the late MC’s What Happened To The World, which dropped in 2014. The project features appearances from Freddie Gibbs, Cormega, Curren$y, Paul Wall, Styles P, Killah Priest, Husalah, Rydah J. Klyde and Fed-X, among others.
