Frank Ocean Provides Update On New Album, Doesn’t Want To Involve Kanye West

Following the success of his breakout mixtape nostalgia, ULTRA, Frank Ocean has been busy in the studio recording his Def Jam debut. Speaking with BBC 1xtra’s Zane Lowe, the Odd Future crooner says that the album is already written and that he’s focused on the production aspect of the LP.

“The record’s written, we’re just trying to tie up all the production. Get everything sonically pleasing to me, the director of this film,” he said. “It’s been cool working on it. I take my time, for better or for worse. I’m excited to share and perform them. When I started writing this record, that’s one of the things I said. I was like, this record, I want to be able to perform well, to transition to stage well.”

He also spoke on whether or not he would have Kanye West involved with the production side of the album. Instead of campaigning to have one of his beats on the LP, he decided he’d rather go it alone and stick with a producer named Malay.

“I’ll be candid about that. I told [Kanye], as much as I want to work with you – I’m not going to say he wants to work with me so bad – but I’m a big fan. He’s a big influence on my music. I told him, ‘As much as I want to work with you, I kind of want to do this without you. I kind of want to do it on my own.’

“I worked with one producer, who I don’t know, I just found some random synergy with, a producer named Malay,” he continued. “We worked for the first couple of days and did some crazy feeling songs.”

    1. I respect that, all these albums that come out mainstream now sound exactly the same

Same Producers, Same Features, Same Everything

      Do you kid

      1. i totally agree with this comment…everybody sounds the same because everybody wants to work with the same stalwart producers…it doesn’t hurt to use a little known producer who has vision and an ear for good music…

    2. you gta be stupid not to want Kanye on your album..the nigga crafts classics period. But I can respect him sticking with one producer for the whole album..still it would not hurt to throw one Kanye track on there frank. I’m gna go listen to MBDTF now 🙂

    3. this dude may be a good writer but singing wise no Hall or Sweat or Vandross. i guess LA gave him fame for being a Louisiana flood survivor.

      1. true he’s not, but for this generation he is there vandross & sweat. also the population is starved for something different and halfway decent…and he fits the mold.

    4. HIP HOP IS ON SOME OL FUK THE ESTABLISHMENT…US AGAINST THEM TYPE OF VYBE. AND THE FINGER IS POINTED AGAINST ANYTHING “OLD” AND ANYTHING INDUSTRY CORPORATE!

      AHH HIP HOP!

    5. DONT ACT LIKE YOU TOO GOOD FOR kANYE , THEN SAY YOU GOT “SOME RANDOM” PRODUCER..

you tampering with your own sales fool

    6. I say good for him. He’s not dissing Kanye. He’s not trashing Kanye as a producer. He’s saying I wanna do this myself. I hate his singing but hey let him do what he wants

    7. Frank was not dissing kanye, he was trying to say was that he wants to prove that he can do it by himself and be successful without help unlike so many of the artists around today

    8. Agreed Frank…you don’t need to collab with every superstar…your music is excellent on its own…if Kanye can’t respect your wishes then he isn’t your friend…you’re comfortable with Malay and that’s totally fine…good wine needs no bush
