Eminem Writes Letter To Detroit

It has been an eventful few weeks for Marshall Mathers. In late February he became the most popular person in the world according to Facebook, and earlier this week became the first to reach 30 million “likes.”

On Tuesday his ad with Chrysler that first ran during the Superbowl was was honored by the Detroit City Council. Then yesterday, he earned his first Diamond plaque for ten million units sold in the US of The Eminem Show

He caps of the week with a letter to uplift his struggling city.

    1. As successful as he is, he isn’t very influential to the African American race (hate to bring race into this but it’s true).

      1. With all due respect, he is very influential to Black kids as well as Black adults here in the D.

Back in 1998, I saw Eminem open up for Ras Kass on a April Tuesday @ Alvin’s and he got signed by Dr. Dre that following Thursday.

I once felt the way that you did until he came out in 1999 and I saw all the Black kids reciting his lyrics all over the city just like the White kids in the suburbs. Black females were and are still digging him too.

Lately, he has been losing influence the more that his music is maturing away from what has currently been deemed as “mainstream” hip hop.

As a counter argument, intra-racially speaking, would you say that B.O.B., Q-Tip, or J-Cole are as influential today to African Americans as a Waka Flaka, Gucci Mane, or Soulja Boy?

        Think about it.

      2. no1 reps detroit as hard as eminem, he loves detroit more than any other famous person, and he does try to help detroit, an example being, the chrysler commercial which he did for FREE

      3. Is that needed out of obligation because he’s a hip hop artist and African-Americans created the artform? Absolutely not. Besides, in today’s marketplace, Whites buy more albums that African-Americans do.

      4. I’m sure he is influential in Detroit in some manner(but like I said, not that much). But he is less likely to make you stop violent acts than Proof would have for example. And Proof was/is not as famous as Em is.

He may have done things for Detroit but actually influence the youth? Not really…

I think you guys are confusing fame/popularity with influence.

      5. For that counter argument, it’s tough to say. The more mainstream rappers song’s are about what a large portion of their fans go through/ try to do (Eminem has more specific topics in his raps that only a small crowd relates to). You tend to be more influenced by someone that shares/shared something in common with you. By nature the first thing we look at is the presence(skin color, how we dress, how we speak etc.). So just because of how we are natuarally Eminem loses alot of his influential “power” towards the AA community. I mean look at our president…perfect example of how race is a factor in being influential towards a certain group.

      6. Actually i just got back from miami for my first time and i met a cuban chick a black chick and like 3 other people who have loved em since the day he dropped even one girl who followed him on the anger management tour so just cus u dont know someone black who likes him dont mean ish cus trust me were out there race aint shit skills is what counts we actually bumped into a white dude on south beach he had a crowd around him freestyling dude was sick to didnt get his name tho

      7. How are fame and popularity not running side by side with influence? Fame and popularity lead to influence. Why do you think that Tiger Woods lost all of his sponsors? Because of the influence that the companies believed that he had among his fans. His popularity is what GAVE him the influence. Do you think that anyone would even know who Nas was (as an influence) if it wasn’t for his popularity and famous career in hip-hop? No. To say that “confusing influence with popularity” is quite ridiculous. They basically go hand in hand.

    2. eminem dont give a fuck about the detroit if he did he would buy some abandoned buildings fix em up,and put homeless people during winter time when its hardest, yes im white too from detroit area, but if i had his money i would actually make shit happen then make ads with chrysler who dont give a fuck about anything than your money

      1. this dude flew me out to jimmy kimmel when I worked for gm with a bunch of other employees. shut up that’s love. what are the other rappers doing for there hood?

      2. flew you out to jimmy kimmel
were the fuck is your head at??

did you read what the other guy said about fixing um abandoned buildings..

      3. Fixing up abandoned buildings at random and placing homeless who can’
t pay for nothing in them during the winter time is not going to help the CITY of Detroit, as in the MUNICIPAL, capitalist side of what makes a city. Eminem doing all this stuff is actually bringing in REVENUE and MONEY that can then be used by the city for that kind of stuff and more. Use your brain. And being “white” and from Detroit doesn’t make your argument stronger just say what you have to say.

      4. fixing abandoned buildings is going to do what?? Without business or people to fill them…. please do tell. That’s is why they are tearing them down. Hate to tell you, as a DETROIT native, unlike yourself, as much as I hate to see it, you have to destroy to rebuild. Eminem fixing a building does nothing for the city. Lifting the spirits, and repping is good enough. So fuck off.

      5. YOUR ALL DUMB, EMINEM HAS RESTORED OVER 100 house’s in partnership with habitat for humanity. And I read that back in 06 hoes so im sure hes done way more since then

      6. listen ya dumb fucks,
if em really cared or had a clue how to really help he would actually use some of his 100 million to open shelters, create social movements, healthcare programs and say some worthwhile shit in his clown songs. he flew GM workers to JIMMY KIMMEL- see its all corporate connected. how about doing some real shit. not that he;s obligated. and he is a big puppet and a distraction from the real issues and the rappers with real content.

      7. stupid fucks replying to the man below you didnt even read the comment he said put homeless people in them ,not rent them for profit if you never been to to the D then you dont know shitttttttttt there is so many homeless during winter it gets very fucking cold in here in case you didnt know and nobody deserves that shit

      8. K, can we STOP ripping the guy who was flown to see Jimmy Kimmel, Good for you man, I hope you enjoyed it. and leave em alone, what the fuck have you done for your city, why dont you go and fix some messed up building in your city huh!?

    3. don’t ever let this J-23 clown write anything for this site again – get your facts straight before you post shit fuck nut.

    4. I was waiting for the violin solo. Is there anything more patronizing than a multi millionaire entertainer preaching about the struggles of a city? Is somebody living in a hood in Los Angeles supposed to have a heart flutter because he or she sees some dude in a wheelchair, or some crazy lookin Charles Manson auto worker staring into the camera? All Em can realistically do is donate money to causes he believes in.

      1. nooo….because its a letter TOO DETROIT not Los Angeles you know like if 2pac wrote a letter too detroit it wouldnt mean anything…but if eminem, he’s one of their own, your reference is coming from somewhere else… maybe your mad about broke this week

      2. dude you dont even listen to the other guys main pont..

all em can realistically do is donate money..
thats truth.. money is were it hurts.. giving money is proving a point..

he probably made money making these hollywod type bs commercials

      1. Yeah this guy again you idiot. Go cut your own throat in mid air while you leap to your death jumping of a 20 story building if you have a problem with Eminem. He is the greatest rapper to ever live. No homo. no dick riding. this is a fact.

      2. tayfont …. i belive what you do is the very definition of dick riding.

relapse, recovery, encore definetly not “greatest rapper of all time – material”

yes it sold most among white teens..
but they dont judge whos the best rapper dont matter how strongly they influence numbers..

      3. Fuck You “Anonymous”. and fuck you “gutter man” you two can suck Waka Flacka’s dick. Em is just trying to help out, and calling em a fag, is like calling Jay-Z LA.

      4. ok i guess yall are still pissed that em is a G.O.A.T. it just eats you up inside huh? he is out there doing his thing and all you have to say is he is gay or white teens is the reason he sells so many records? its pretty clear you are all haters and thats what you do is hate probably working at a fast food joint livin with your moms. tell me though who doesnt have respect for eminem? it seems all the other so called great emcees you talk about cant wait to get on a calabo with him or sign with him i think the real reason is your a racist and cant take it that em is white and the greatest rapper alive. he jumps on everyones track and rapes them no one can or ever will be able to take a track from him and the ones who dont get on a song with him know he will kill it

      5. d
please jump off eminems genitals. If u think no one can beat em u need to watch the video with fat joe em and percee p cus percee p shits on em i mean ems great but corneaga would rock him lord finesse would kill him there are several who would u just dont listen to shit.

      6. especially if it was a battle rap then theres even more people who would beat em..joe budden would roast him. em thinks redman is goat and redman said he would battle budden even tho budden would definitely win..whats that tell you?

      7. I don’t know why people are hating on a man who is reaching out to try and inspire people for the better? When Nas wrote an anti violence letter to the youth in Chicago he got huge props. This letter is based on the same principle but still some people can’t appreciate the goodness of it. And this opinion is’nt coming from a big Eminem fan, i can acknowledge that there are better lyricists than Eminem but they just have’nt done it on a mainstream level. So this argument is really about white and black people defending their own representatives in Hiphop which seems really needless, because it is a music which is created to be enjoyed by all.

      8. im the 3rd guy..

im not hating on em at all lol..
im hating on “eminem-patriots” .. you guys, who are white and have the nerve to say shit like “if you dont see em is the best your dumb” ..
that type of guy is what im hating on..

dont pee your pants i know em is a great rapper.. also im not black..

      9. Are you replying to me because what you are saying is agreeing with what i am saying? I don’t really get if you’re agreeing or disagreeing with me?

    5. if em really cared or had a clue how to really help he would actually use some of his 100 million to open shelters, create social movements, healthcare programs and say some worthwhile shit in his clown songs. he flew GM workers to JIMMY KIMMEL- see its all corporate connected. how about doing some real shit. not that he;s obligated. and he is a big puppet and a distraction from the real issues and the rappers with real content.

      1. Really, I am an alone women and been homeless. I go months with no human contact. I have been a mark of much crime always alone. Pretty much since 16. Ink rice myself and many others who rap, sing cartoon and draw, don’t get a voice it a chance. Eminem has never lived the suffering of many in this society and allot of his money comes from fans donating. He Dishonors me on every level. I feel like raps my character, even his ‘child youth ‘foundation’. I myself and others have volunteered or worked in that cause to get the retaliation if steeping in to intervene when another adult abuses a kid, for me only attempted vehicular assault and knife attack, but last week a youth care u it was shot at and three died. It’s also his fans donating. Just think, half his fans and one dollar- a min, he takes in a million.

    6. shut the fuk u eminem haters, no one reps detroit harder than em, if it was big sean doin this, u lot wouldnt even care. There’s no point him building up buildings if homeless people still dont have food etc. He brings revenue in2 D town, and help s much as he can with various foundations – no homo, em is solid

      1. I will agree with the fact that, it is no one man job to save society or a town- but there is a reason on why a man gives so much of his money. When money is earned from honesty and real hard work – you don’t throw it out the these ‘gods’ of society do. Throwing money is also easier than ones making physical sacrifices and donating their time.

Excuse typos and typos on my other post. I am using phone and cannot edit.

      1. I agree completely. Calling a man gay for trying to tell his people to hold their heads up is pretty much like the republicans attacking Obama for trying to pass free health care. It’s so ridiculous to attack a person for something like this.

I volunteer on a regular basis at the homeless shelters in Seattle. And even doing that doesn’t help them get off the streets. What Eminem was/is doing in this video is just supporting his people, that’s all he can do. No amount of money from him will fix the situation. Look at the trillion dollar debt we’ve accumulated, and look at the state of our country. That’s probably a good indication that money doesn’t fix everything.

    7. oh yeah i forgot to put this in bellow all you who hate him and call him gay yes you haters obviously watched the video and clicked on this link so your either a closet eminem fan or just like to talk shit with your so high knowledge of hip-hop. and him not dumping his money into detroit what would that do? detroit needs to help itself one man cant do that shit alone he is just stepping up saying ill help will you?

      1. atta boy. seriously though, how you gonna call em gay for making this video? you’re clearly just a fucking asshole if you think telling the most devastated city in the country to keep their heads up is gay.

    8. i love eminem and this things great but it came out 2 years ago… actually during the 2009 final four in detroit. dx looks like ur a little behind on this
