Eminem‘s manager, Paul Rosenberg, was concerned the rapper might have had brain damage following his hospital stay in 2007 after overdosing on methadone.
Slim Shady appeared on the latest episode of Rosenberg’s Paul Pod: Curtain Call 2 podcast that was released on Wednesday (September 7). During the conversation, they discussed Eminem’s drug overdose and his journey to recovery.
“It took a long time for my brain to start working again,” Em admitted, to which Rosenberg replied: “I mean, you literally were coming off of an overdose and they had to sort of stabilize you with a few medications. And some of them took you a minute to adjust to – let’s just leave it at that.
“So you’re learning to rap again, almost literally, right? Because it’s the first time probably you were creating without having substances in your body in however many years, right?”
Eminem verified Rosenberg’s comments, before bringing up his manager’s worries after he sent him music for the first time since his overdose.
“Didn’t you ask the doctors — when I first started rapping again and sent it to you — didn’t you say like, ‘I just wanna make sure he doesn’t have brain damage,'” he said.
Rosenberg replied: “I thought you might have some permanent problems. Yeah, I was concerned, for sure.”
Eminem opened up about his drug rehabilitation journey in an interview with MTV in 2010, revealing he had to relearn how to rap and drive a car.
“I had to learn to write and rap again, and I had to do it sober and 100 percent clean,” he said. “That didn’t feel good at first … I mean it in the literal sense. I actually had to learn how to say my lyrics again; how to phrase them, make them flow, how to use force so they sounded like I meant them.
“Rapping wasn’t like riding a bike. It was [as much] physical as mental. I was relearning basic motor skills. I couldn’t control my hand shakes. I’d get in the [recording] booth and tried to rap, and none of it was clever, none was witty and I wasn’t saying it right.”
Following his overdose, the Detroit native returned with Relapse in 2009, his first solo album since 2004’s Encore. The project was heavily inspired by his prescription pill addiction as he rapped about his battle on songs like “Déjà Vu” and “My Mom.”
In 2019, Eminem celebrated over a decade of sobriety. “11 years,” he wrote on Twitter while sharing a photo of his 11-year coin from a 12-step drug rehab program. “still not afraid.”
And his raps never recovered since.
Your mom never recovered from the beatdown I gave her p back in the day. You should have been swallowed or an abortion.
Still beats any main stream rapper by a longgggg shot and at his age still very competitive next to jay z with his shit ass elevator music … don’t see you clowns talking down on any mumble rappers yet they do far more harm to the culture…
Saying Em beats any mainstream rapper isn’t anything special. Mainstream hiphop is GARBAGE in 2022. Eminem used to be able to beat out or compete with both underground and mainstream. Now only mainstream. He can’t compete with the underground talents. Maybe lyrics wise he can, but certainly not sonically.
Well tell me who is so special that one could talk down on one of the greatest of all time based on him not being as good as he was in his prime, not to mention if you are in the mainstream you have a script to stick too in regards to content and skill capability being presented to the masses. You know damn well he can battle rap damn near any rapper on this planet and not get eaten alive if you deny that I know where you stand
I definitely wouldn’t sit here like you and pretend eminem is one of the greater battle rappers. He was good. But not great. But for a battle rapper who made great music? Yes, and thays very uncommon. I don’t think any good rapper has any standing to talk down on eminem. But I do think his music sucks nowadays, though it still takes a lot of talent to make it. All those “amazing eminem freestyles” aren’t off the dome. Their the “modern freestyles”, where someone spits rehearsed lines over a beat. Em was good on the cough when he was young though. He just sounds so cringe now. “THATS AN AWFULY HOT COFFEE POT, SHOULD I DROP IT ON TRUMP, PROBABLY NOT”. That’s the equivalent of “I’m a spiritual, lyrical individual.
The most incredible story is Eminem’s. Glad he walked away from it. Salute Shady!
I can see that
Nah you can’t, you fuckin Stevie Wonder!
As someone who has been through addictions and overdosed b4 this is fiction you don’t lose your ability to do anything this is an excuse for his wack albums
It all depends on the person and drugs consumed… everyone responds differently alot of people suffer brain damage end of the day none of you like him because he is white and doesn’t rap about slanging drugs…
You’re ab idiot. Drugs can 100% cause permanent mental and physical problems. You must’ve never met anyone who fried themselves on crack, meth, acid, or alcohol.
I KEEP TELLING EVERYONE. EMINEM DID OD AFTER ENCORE AND THEY MANAGED TO CLONE HIM BEFORE HE WAS GONE TO GET THE STERILIZED EMINEM THAT WE HAVE TODAY.. THAT’S WHY THEY GAVE EMINEM 2.0 HIS OWN GREATEST HITS ALBUM.
Eh… I think Eminem is just one of the millions of cases of drug addicts who completely changed, as all we knew was their drug addict sound, style, and persona. I’ve know many drug addicts in my life. The series users eyes change. Legot looking very different. Their hair, skin, voice, and personality change drastically. I think Em lost a lot of his old talent by going sober. Many of the greatest artists in history were abusing hard drugs, because let’s be honest, some drugs help immensely with creativity and pushing our bodies to do things we couldn’t do sober. I myself used to take kratom, I quit… but it helped amazingly well with my music production. I made my best stuff while buzzing on that. And kratom has a similar feeling to an opiate. After quitting, my music isn’t as good as it was when abusing the drug. But I’d rather be healthy than make good music and feel like junk.
Didn’t Em make Encore on drugs? I think drugs had the opposite effect on him lol
That was like what, 15 years ago? I’m an Em fan but at this point I think I rather hear him rap about the usual money, cars, and bitches then hear him rap about his recovery again.
and thus ‘Social Justice Warrior Eminem’ was born.
its still not clever or witty unless ur in grade school
Oh the irony
Everyone that hates…. This is for you… ??
“I’m debated, disputed, hated, and viewed in America as a motherfuckin’ drug addict, like you didn’t experiment?”
Zzzzzzzzzzz
Why All the Haters????? Em is one of the most decent Entertainers/Rappers EVER in the World!! His story can help people. You few tiny minions mean nothing. If you don’t like Em then why comment?
He looks so fuckin corny. Just look at him! Balding ass 60-year old man, screaming in to the mic about pee and poo. What a pathetic, cringey, self-hating cuckold.
