Earl Sweatshirt Doesn’t Listen To Eminem

Earl Sweatshirt is preparing his next album after the release of this year’s I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside.

In a recent interview with Spin, Earl Sweatshirt says that he doesn’t listen to Eminem anymore.

“If you still follow Eminem, you drink way too much Mountain Dew and probably need to like, come home from the army,” the 21-year-old rapper says.

He says that he is working with Knxwledge, who released a mixtape with Anderson .Paak.

“He just got that game sewed up,” Earl Sweatshirt says of the producer. “So he inspired me.”

The rapper says that although he is changing musical direction after his heavy album, there was positivity that came out of making such a dark project.

“Got way closer with my mom this year,” he says. “Some of the s**t that I said on [I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside] made it easier to just make things clear for me, and then the natural growth that happened with time, like I just loved how our relationship’s growing as I get older. I don’t get that weird childhood apprehension that sometimes puts a gate between you and your [parent]. So we can kick it now. She knows I’m grown now and that I’m not like at risk of doing any wild shit. So when I come through and I’m high on leaves, it’s not a fucking big deal anymore.”

    1. And who listens to an idiot named “Earl Sweatshirt” anyway? What classics does he have? Fuck that: What hit record does he even have? Don’t worry I’ll wait. Lfmao! What a shithead. Em’s weakest album would bury this kid’s whole existence

      1. Lmfao*knew at least one butt hurt em stan would say something along the lines you said*ha ha*long live the 80s & 90s*

    2. I’ve never been a big fan of Eminem….I’ve liked some of his songs but i’ve never purchased any of his albums. He sounds like he may have listened to Em before, but now he doesn’t.

    3. This dude been wack since he came back from Samoa.

2015 you gotta drink mtn dew and be in rhe army to listen to Em?

You gotta be suicidal, emo, or a straight up loser to listen to Earl in 2015.

    4. Wow niggas is hatin Eminem now, I rather listen to em for the rest of my life, then these dudes. Like really Eminem. The problem is rappers aren’t getting checked when stupid shit is being said out the mouth. The state of hip hop today is shitfaced, with only a few exceptions

    5. spoken like a true ignorant 21 year old. stupid ass rich kid trying dis a renowned veteran. no one will even know who this mouthbreather is in 2 years. But Em’s legacy will just keep growing. Earl Dogshit still hasn’t put out anything relevant yet and it sure doesn’t look like he ever will.

    6. Earl Sweatshirt is dope and the Odd Future Crew also – they are bringing something new to the game. Maybe that’s why Eminem was so successful because he and D12 brought “Shock Rap” to the game. So Earl if you want to eat please do not bite the hand that feeds you. In apology, please send Eminem a signed cope of the Doris album for his Hip-Hop History collection. A cheque will not do!

    7. This guy a dumb mfmf has no talent so he talk about em fans Earl the girl needs to learn his place in music week ass raper

    8. Earl fucks with Mac Miller heavy so it’s not some racist shit I see where he’s coming from but that’s super disrespectful

    9. Eminem has lost his story telling ability, he got no more Life stories to tell. Therefore, he spits super fast with complicated metaphors -But I still discover alternative meaning in he earlier song.
Just checking the mail, get it just checking a male (Gay Reference)
      1,2,3 – 1,2,3 – 1,2,3 – that ain’t the hook, so follow me (1+2+3 = 6 – reference to the devil and the mark of the beast – 66 and one more 6 (I don’t want type that number!)

      1. Kool G Rap? Nas? Talib Kweli? Elzhi? Rakim? Just because he raps about his mom and every other generic issue ever, doesn’t make him one of the best, far from it. He’s got bars, I’ll admit, but it’s not the best rhymes ever, even qualatavitly.

      2. Kool G said Em is the only person in this era to impress him and even named Em as one of his favorite rappers, and Rakim said “Em is Nasty, when someone sits down and writes his rhymes, and they listen to another Kat that sits down and writes his rhymes, they just know, He’s nasty” and come on, Talib Kweli and Elzhi don’t pale in comparison, Ems skill level, song making, structure, bars, story telling, etc etc. is far superior. Nas is great, IMO there’s no comparison there either though, And I own all of Nas’s album and all of Em’s, front to back, album vs. album, song vs. song, Em is far superior. It’s hard for me to see why people don’t clearly see how much better Em is, and I always come to realize, yes these people know some Eminem (popular songs) but they Really don’t know much outside of that. IMO Em is top 3 ever. No rapper in history touches 1997-2004 Eminem. And what’s incredible is he’s technically a better emcee now (lyric wise, I mean come on, dudes constantly using triple entendre’s). No one holds a torch in the game today. He’s constantly roasting dudes in his camp who are extremely dope emcee’s, not to mention that track “Speedom” with probably the most talented rapid fire rapper to ever live, Tech N9ne. Who honestly deserves to be recognized more as a top tier rapper. Dudes incredible.

      3. Cosign! Em is a top 3. MMLP was silly. But he lost me when he began yelling? But I still love records like “Anyman” from Rawkus Records “Soundbombing II” that’s the Em that I remember

      4. Lmao, sad when a “corny rapper” slaughters every elite Emcee he gets on a track with, Crooked, Royce, Jay, Redman, Biggie, Tech. Etc. Weird. You won’t admit it, but you know if your favorite emcee says he got Em on a track, you’re sitting back saying “fuck, my dude might get embarrassed” lol

      5. Yep I’m thoroughly convinced that people who disagree simply don’t listen. I’ve had debates with dudes that said “oh so and so is better than Em” blah blah blah, k you hear this song? This album? This diss track? Etc etc, now they swear no one can touch Em.

      6. Wow you gotta be fucking joking Illmatic shits on everything else I love those albums MMLP is up there but Illmatic shits on it

      7. Woah let’s not get carried away. I personally think Shadys the goat but illmatic is as good as any hip-hop album ever made. That album was perfect.

      8. Pharoahe Monch and K-Rino are the closest to his rhyme skill. I find it crazy that Em is, like, seriously LIGHTYEARS ahead of the next best rapper, and people refuse to give him his props for it. They call him corny but respect artists who talk about the same selling drugs, having money, being really cool bullshit that has been standard for decades now and bring nothing new to the equation content-wise. Like Em said himself “I’ll probably never get the props I feel I ever deserve”. All that being said, the actual quality of his albums is about on par with Illmatic or OB4CL or any of the classics. I disagree with you that Illmatic is mediocre in comparison, although the wordplay is clearly superior with Em. I mean, Nas is heralded as such a great storyteller but none of his stories can be followed in such detail like “Stan”.

      9. Illmatic is a classic, I’m not saying it isn’t, I just personally don’t believe it holds it weight against MMLP. It’s just far more of a complete album, really just look at these two tracklist side by side, and think about it man. Look at all the controversy Em was under, and how many subjects he touched on that album, not to mention 5 more songs than illmatic had to offer. Calling names, and disses in multiple songs, touching up on Media/ beef with Benzino, ICP, problems in his personal life. Never has a rapper opened up like Eminem has, Nas has even said that he himself could never be that personal. Songs from “The Way I am, Marshall Mathers, Who Knew” then arguably the greatest storytelling song ever in “Stan”, and Even “Kim” is like you are in horror story, he literally takes you into his songs. “The Real Slim Shady” is timeless. “I’m Back, Drug Ballad, Kill You, Bitch Please 2, Amytivilly, Under The Influence, Remember Me?” It’s just a far more complete project and has a full 5 more songs. He takes you through every emotion from laughter, anger, horror, sadness, etc. I just don’t see Illmatic holding its weight to MMLP. Sorry

    10. Please list the rappers that are better then Eminem – then we’ll have a discussion! I’m awaiting for someone to say Future!

      1. Man bro Black Thought from The Roots, Pusha T, Lupe Fiasco’s 1/15th tapes 1-4 (+some albums), there’s more, but lastly a newer rapper Logic has some skill, not that he’s better, he’s just someone to look at that I’m throwing in.

    11. You heard what this little ugly nigga said, has no respect for his mother or Eminem. He dont care if hes high as fuck and goes sees his mom, even though his mom finds that completely disrespectful. Nobody listens to this disrespectful black gypsie hoodlum

    12. if you listen to earl sweatshirt its prob by mistake. idk one person who ever metioned earl sweatshirt and ive had 1000s of convos on music

    13. Huh? Who are you? It’s pure promo for he’s whack track, that no one outside of he’s homies or town listens. Please shut the f**k up.

    14. I can understand where earl is coming from. M is a great lyricist but his songs an albums lack that repeatability i think because his beat selection is terrible you can’t ride to most of it… Hes still a top ten MC though..peace

    15. All I have to say is track #15 (MEDICINE MAN) on COMPTON which features Eminem just killed the whole rap game in 2015. Hands down. Sorry trolls.

    16. its so funny how yall dick ride your favorite rappers around here and always, ALWAYS, hate on the ones that have actual skill. the 90’s will never be here again. but i will always base whose a dope rapper or not on their skill and lyricism. and earl is unbelievably skilled with the lyricism. front, hate, say what you will..but hes one of the dopest in the game right now and one of the youngest

      1. Nigga never is he unbeleivably skilled. Take his dick out your “unbelievably” wide rectum. He’s an OK Rapper that only whiteboys and black sakyteboard dudes fuck with. Absolutely no street cred in the least. His beats suck and a lot of his music is corny as hell

    17. Honestly though, who tf listens to Em ? I never hear ppl bumpin Em & I live near mad white ppl with knock in their rides. Never hear no damn Em… I believe all those record sales where bullshit

      1. So who are the people filling the soccer stadiums around the world when he performs? Are they bullshit? Are they holograms? Mannequins? We should really look into this mystery.

    18. Man I like Em and respect him as an artist, but honestly has anyone really liked anything he put out after encore? to me rest of his catalogue is pretty much unlistenable

      1. I didn’t like encore except a couple of songs. Same goes for relapse. But Recovery and MMLP2 have a lot of awesome songs.

    19. Eminem’s only got two songs: the one where he kills his mother and/or wife (they’re practically the same person for Eminem), and the one where he makes bad jokes about celebrities. Once you’ve heard them, you’ve heard everything he has to offer. You can be the most technically gifted rapper of all time (he’s not) but that doesn’t mean a damn thing if your subject matter is repetitive, juvenile nonsense. And yelling. And “funny” voices.

    20. If you still follow Earl Sweatshirt, you drink way too much Mountain Dew and probably need to like, come home from the army

    21. Earl who? Get the fuck outta here. This article would have no views if it wasn’t for u mountain dew shady fan. #SorryNotSorry

    22. Glad someone said it. Eminem has been making garbage music for over a decade now. And even at his peak he was just a second rate Redman.

      1. Earl Sweatshirt taking a backhanded stab at Em? The best thing for his career would be if Em retaliated, but he won’t.

And @Nadya – A second rate Redman? Ha, STFU, Eminem may have fell off over the last few years but his early work was legendary. Redman will never get to Em’s level.

      2. Naw. Redman made better records. Em can rap but has never made good music. It appeals to angry little boys like you, that’s all.

    23. Earl who? What kinda goof names himself sweatshirt this goof thinks anyone 15-25 doesnt bump eminem or old school shyt but thats the real shyt! rap today aint shyt compared to the golden age

      1. I was makin a point cuz this fuck face said fuck 90s rap and eminems on the level of
The golden era ya big dummy mmlp top 20 album of all time to some top 10 fuck. It
.could even be top.5 dependin who u ask

    24. That’s a pretty stupid thing to say given the size of Eminem’s fan base. Never insult potential customers, it’s bad business practice and makes you look like an imbecile.

      1. Earl has already stated that if he loses fans because he doesn’t rap about rape and all the other stupid shit he used to do when he was 16, he doesn’t care. That’s pretty much all Eminem fans are into. Earl has a strong fan base anyway, so I doubt he’s worried.

    25. If I’m correct your only as good as ur last album, mmlp2 was fire, somebody explain to me what garbage Eminem has put out. Please

    26. Dumb ass of the year award goes to this dude. Odd fagture fans are all white teenagers tho.. this clowns forehead is bigger than the state of Texas

      1. Yo bruh, you realize Eminem has the biggest fanbase in the world out of any rapper right? Me and my crew went to a concert of his last year and there were people from ages 10 all the way to like 60. This one woman by us was 66 and her granddaughter was 11 and they were both huge fans. You’re just ignorant as fuck. I’m black and I fuck with Eminem. He spits real shit and is a legend whether you want to admit it or not.

    27. Eminem’s a culture vulture. Granted, he wasn’t completely corny about it so he was accepted by us. Doesn’t change the fact that he’s a white dude trying to be black.

      1. Yup OK if you say so …..Obvious troll is an obvious troll ….Look ma i’m race baiting on a hiphop site …I know son i’m proud of you LMAO …Next time try harder suburban dweeb

      2. A culture vulture? FOH. Racist lame! If the artist isn’t black they’re automatically considered a culture vulture. Em payed his dues and respects to those who paved the way. Do I fuck with Em like that? Nope! But it doesn’t change the fact that your comment is complete bullshit. Should we call Kid Cudi a culture vulture for making rock albums now? Do you see white people up in arms because of it? Nope! Because we don’t care. Take your racist ass somewhere else

      3. You sir are an idiot for fulling for his troll post dude is white and race baiting because he gets a kick out of people responding and you fell for it . If you’re interested I have some MAGIC BEANS FOR SALE . Jeez some of you are so easy

      4. Culture vulture?! Gtfoh with that ish, bruh. Race is a socially constructed ideology meant to divide people. Good for you for playing into it, son. He doesn’t need “your” acceptance to mow through most mainstream MC’s

Try and be black? For real? I listen to Trap, and I’m white. Am I trying to ‘serve the bass’ or front? Nah. I’m a white dude with tattoos who gets stereotyped into listening to rock music. Why don’t you try and stop all this subliminal racist ish, grow up, and make this world a better place. And I don’t even like Eminem. If you’re listening to earl sweatshirt you’re probably saving your lunch money through the week to go buy a dub on Friday.

      5. Co sign, that dudes too obvious . But you know this is the site of race baiting every article HHDX normally puts on this site has a race bait angle to it . It’s all bout them clicks =ad revenue this shit will be on the front page of HHDX soon mark my words !

      6. Lmao no they don’t. The thing you’re talking about is a song called Foolish Pride when he was 16 and he said black girls only care about your money. He made the song because he was dating a black girl that cheated on him. Benzino tried to make him look bad and it backfired on him hard. I’m black and even I know you’re spewing bullshit. Sad how many ignorant motherfuckers there are in this world.

    28. Fuck Eminem. Lol its funny because most Em fans are the ones who drink Mountain Dew and play CoD all day calling other white kids the N word and are usually rly insecure about their masculinity. Fuck Earl too he be on hipster shit

      1. New shit? Not as much but that’s to be expected. Who listens to JAY Z’s MCHG? That album was a weed plate at best. But I still fuck with Jay though. Wouldn’t try and clown him like this nobody is doing

      2. I know MANY people who listen to Eminem like that and a lot of those people are black. I’ve got many black friends here in Memphis that bump his stuff all the time.

      3. There’s alot of us that do.. If you don’t love and appreciate crazy complex, multilayered, lyrical word play, raw bars Eminem’s newer music is not for you. If you like music to ride to or hear in the club, you’re not gonna get anything out of it. It’s the kinda shit you vibe out to thru your DRES with the world shut out. You listen to the shit 800 times and catch shit you never caught before. It’s not for everyone.

    29. Eminem’s only decent album was infinite. After that his shit went kinda downhill. Even eminem hates some of his own releases/said he would refund some of his CD’s if you showed up to him in person. He’s a great guy but his music lacks substance. Some of his newer stuff has this whole Inspirational kind of I don’t give a fuck, I’m just telling it like it is vibe that most people would expect out of eminem, so it doesn’t com as a surprise why his fans like him, but his music isn’t really hiphop anymore. It’s basically Pop now.

The only eminem album really worth going back and listening to is Infinite. Other than that, I fully agree with Earl’s statement. And knxwledge is a dope producer. This next project is gonna be dope as fuck on Earl’s part, I can tell.

      1. You’re fucking high bro. Call me when you become the best selling artist of the millennium and probably top 2 record sales ever as a rapper. When your song goes like 6x platinum and wins a fucking Oscar. Who the f is this 21 yr old earl talking shit to Em. Have respect. Look at ems resume, Em dropped classics I know musics opinion but understand Eminem has credentials how u gonna hate on the bar he set on hip hop. Ur opinion don’t mean shit cuz even top hip hop artists in the fuckin game respect Eminem so take ur whack ass comment back up ur ass. Cuz if millionaires respect him who the f is u and ur opinion

    30. it’s sad that he had to create slim in order to really gain a reputation. Because his earlier shit was his dopest shit.

      1. Stfu fool. U are so fucked in the face u probably like meek mill like fuck outa here. Study em. Study mosaic rhyme schemes and compound syllable sound combine. Ems one of the only rappers that you cannot strip the beat away from cuz he kills it lyrically and syllabicly

    31. Look at Em’s albums

      Infinite
      SSLP
      MMLP
      TES
      Encore
      Relapse
      Recovery
      MMLP2

And what do these all have in common? NOTHING, they are all done In a whole different style of rap and sound, he has mastered every aspect of rap, you people are moronic or simply just didn’t listen to his albums! Nobody in history has done that, and no one in history has given us so many great albums in so many different styles. People don’t hate Jay Z when his shits proven to be wack as fuck the past 5+ years. There’s a reason why the greatest rappers have so much respect for Eminem and put him in there top 5-top 10 EVER. It’s obvious he deserves that recognition. So I think Rakim, Kool G’s, Crooked I, Jada, Royce, Game, Jay, Redman, 50’s, etc etc. input is a lot more cohesive than you haters, man. Same dudes that’ll bump Fetty Wap, Drake, And Wiz, ignorant statements everywhere.

      1. Exactly my point, if it’s just “nasally angry white boy shit” then you don’t listen to his albums. Simple as that. You have no idea what you are talking about

      2. If you’ve listened to them then you know your statement is false. How can you say his music is garbage? His songs dominated the 2000’s, Lose Yourself, Stan, Real Slim Shady, When I’m Gone, Mockingbird, My Name Is, Cleaning out my Closet etc. etc. no one in rap history has opened up and used such raw emotion like Eminem. He takes you through every single emotion, from laughter, pain, sadness, fear, shock, His song structure, flow, ability to make beautiful chorus’s/bridges is 2nd to none since the likes of Tupac. I respect your opinion, but it just doesn’t make sense to me how his songs are garbage in a true hip hop fans eyes. It’s undeniable, and every great rapper agree’s.

      3. Look, man, it’s just not for me. The songs you list sound like corny pop songs to me. You’re definitely not wrong to like them, and I can appreciate that people connect with Em on a visceral level in much the same way they did ‘Pac, but I don’t.

      4. Look, man, it’s just not for me. The songs you list sound like corny pop songs to me. You’re definitely not wrong to like them, and I can appreciate that people connect with Em on a visceral level in much the same way they did ‘Pac, but I don’t.

    32. Join the discussion 1st of all who d fuck is Earl Sweatshirt?? Lemme guess a dude who’s trying to make a name of slim by making a controversial statement. And we are actually helping him do dat by even reading or responding to his statement. #so sad

    33. Man, Em cosigned you and you bring this shit up. FOH Earl, Doris was an ok album, IDLSIDGO was a mediocre album at best, I dont understand how people like it and how you grew an ego after that turd of a release.

    34. he is not even a good rapper , he never had a hit or won an award so what made him think he can criticize eminem’s work. grow up kid
on the other side drake one of the best rappers today calls eminem the greatest of all time.
