Drake’s “Hotline Bling” Might Not Have Reached #1 Because Of Apple Deal

Earlier this month, Drake posted on Instagram about his desire for the success of “Hotline Bling.” He said that “no accolades really matter to me other than the fact that I have never had a billboard number one.”

In Billboard‘s weekly sales report, the publication says Drake’s deal with Apple Music might have prevented the song from reaching the top position thus far. The video for “Hotline Bling” was released last week exclusively on the streaming service.

Billboard says Apple Music “does not currently report its video streams to Nielsen Music,” which means the video’s views did not count towards the song’s total sales count. In the streaming songs chart, the track fell from the #2 position to #5.

    1. Damn, even Apple acting shiesty towards Drizzaveli. Let him have his first #1 hit please. Hotline Bling is song and video of the year. #DrakeIsLoveDrakeIsLife

    2. fuck drake, never deserved #1 spot. the beat was jacked from d.r.a.m. [cha cha] and the video concept was jacked from james turrell’s light installation’s. biggest unoriginal idiot in music history.

    3. that exclusivity shit didn’t work out for me cause I don’t fucks w/ apple. not mad he tried to make moves independent of others, but glad theres consequences w/ being exclusive. that video was apples’ shot at youtube, tidal, etc.

    4. I’m a big Drake fan, but it serves him well to miss the number 1 he craves so much because of exclusivity bullshit with Apple. Exclusive deals suck. Release the song, album, video for everyone at the same time.

    5. I don’t think it had anything to do with Apple. Honestly, people have been mocking the video since its release. His dancing is terrible and the purpose behind the video is unclear. He could have done better but fell EXTREMELY short of people’s expectations.
