Drake Lists His Top Five Hip Hop Albums Of All Time

For his recent cover story with The Source magazine, Drake spoke with former Editor-in-Chief Kim Osorio about his five favorite Hip Hop albums of all time. During the interview, he named offerings from The Notorious B.I.G., Jay-Z, OutKast, Clipse and Little Brother as his most coveted picks.

“[Jay’s] Black Album. Clipse, Lord Willin’. Uh, this is not an album, but The Little Brother/[Mick] Boogie mixtape [And Justus For All], that was like pivotal in my life. And then I would have to say, uh, I say [B.I.G.’s] Life After Death. And then I will say a toss up between The Love Below and Aquemini,” he said.

He also tacked on a few more influential albums that pushed him towards a career in rap. “And then that’s without…. That’s life changing. That’s without, you know, [Lil Wayne’s] Carter 2 and other things that pushed me to rap. Those were definitive albums that opened my sound. Oh, and Snoop Dogg, Doggystyle. Those were just definitive albums that opened my mind to sound and melody and cadences and flows and you know. Those were like really important to me.”

Drake’s sophomore album, Take Care, is due November 15th.

    1. At this point of oversaturatedness, anyone with their own style and masters it in this age of monotony i can give respect too.

    2. Drake is gay and his male fans are fuckboys!

Dont talk back either you little fruits cause I dont debate with fuckboys so if you reply with anything then you are a fuckboy because it obviously touched a nerve in your frail fairy body.

      1. And if Lord Willin’ isn’t considered a great album I really wouldn’t know one if i heard it. That cd was great from start to finish. Yeah you can say its just “coke rap” but it is coke rap at its finest.

    3. hhdx has one of the most hate filled comment sections ive ever seen. I dont know if its filled with Teenagers with inferiority complexes or people that like to follow the blog hate bandwagon.

No one commented on the list at all but it was “drake is homosexual”, “drake is a pussy”, etc etc. This nigga is not the best of all time. we know that. Not even close, but damn yall make it seem like this “homosexual” rapper fucked your girl.

If you dont like drake thats cool. so what. life goes on. But if you think drake is “gay”, then why bother with commenting? It confuses the hell out of me

    4. “Im back to say shit you ain’t got the guts or the nuts to, pussy go pick your pussy leaves off you cunt tree(country), Fuck you”-Eminem dissing Drake anyone?

      1. Yeah, Eminem always does subliminals. He’s not the type to name names or make entire mixtapes dissing people he has issues with.

        ohwait

      2. @ NEazy

I don’t think he’s taking any shots at any one person in particular in his music. I think he’s taking shots at the genre as a whole, to call out names of every artist he probably doesn’t like would take an entire mix-tape/album to do.

But on the other side of things, early on in his career he had no problem naming names of rappers (or magazines). I.E. Every song going at Everlast, The Limp Bizkit/Dilated Pupils track on Devils Night, The Sauce, Nail in The Coffin, Go To Sleep etc etc…

    5. My Personal top 5 No Order

      1. It’s Dark And Hell Is Hot
      2. The Eminem Show
      3. Get Rich Or Die Tryin
      4. Obie Trice – Cheers (underrated)
      5. Joe Budden – Mood Muzik 4 (underrated)

I Can’t even speak on the 2pac albums, nas albums, big albums cuz that was before my time so I just put what I came up on

      1. man Illmatic is cool but Jeru the damaja..the sun rises in the east…would beat illmatic in a race by a few inches…like go back and listen to that joint…power!

      2. Lame – Jeru’s The Sun Rises in the East is great, classic by all means but for me, not touching Illmatic, due to both production and lyrics, but not far off…1994 was a ill year for hip hop!

    6. did he seriously not mention nas? are kidding me? it was written, i am…, stillmatic??? not one? get outta here man SOFT

    7. Drake needs to give props to people like Run DMC, Public Enemy, Eric B & Rakim, EPMD.. take time out to discover the golden age classics.. that’s like today’s rock bands only giving props to people from Nirvana on up..

      1. I’m sure with his age he didn’t grow up listening to that, that shit is before his time. People keep sticking in the past will never have a future

    8. 1. nas illmatic
      2. the game the documentary
      3. biggie smalls ready to die
      4. 2pac all eyes of me
      5. snoop dogg doggystly
no order top 5 i think

    9. -Hell Hath No Fury>Lord Willin’
      -Reasonable Doubt>The Black Album
      -No Pac or Nas…really?

Honestly tho, does anyone expect much from a dude that was on Degrassi?

      1. not EVERYBODY has to like Pac, it’s not a law, whenever a Pac song comes on, i have to change it, shit gets boring after a while. and i consider him one of the Greats

    10. So… Drake includes Biggie, OutKast, Little Brother, Clipse, the best albums from Jay-Z and Snoop Dogg and, yeah, Lil Wayne (can’t all be winners) on his list of favorite albums and all people can say is that he’s gay?

Can somebody explain that to me?

    11. And another thing… People are dismissing his entire list because Illmatic isn’t on it?

Just because one album you like isn’t on the man’s list doesn’t mean he doesn’t like it either. I’d bet Drake loves Illmatic! It might just not be in his top 5, get over it.

    12. Really? Just because your favourites arent on HIS PERSONAL list, does it make him a douche? I dont like him as an artist, but tastes are subjective. Worse than mainstream fans are YOU “real” hiphop fans who entirely dismiss their opinions judging by their music taste. Thats fucking bullshit. And illmatic isnt in my top 5 either, does it make me a hiphop noob if I dont like that album?

      You people make me laugh.

    15. My personal list might be different, but Drake’s list is pretty decent, all things considered. I’m not sure why everyone is so angry.

    16. I know people are prolly gonna be hatin, but i think marshall mathers lp has to be up for consideration in top 5 all time

      1. No, you’re completely wrong, Em’s an OK emcee, but none of his LPs are worthy of joinin’ hip-hop’s elite. Drake’s list is bullshit as well. Where’s Cube, DOOM, DITC, Wu, any Premo album…

    17. Damn man this is DRAKE’s list…let him live….IT IS HIS LIST….NOT YOURS….let him live…oh yall want him to say Illmatic…Ready to Die…Slim Shady Lp….them are the albums that influenced him….damn i dont like dude music but damn..yall are corny ass hell. I cant knock Drakes list, I would be more suprised If It didnt look like that. A persons favourite album is based on longevity/classic songs from start to finish etc to THEMSELVES!

      1. Lol. I wouldnt call them lames, just ignorant. Ignorance is bliss. If 50 cent or Lil Wayne appears in your top 5, then you are not aware of stuff that might be better. To be honest I hate top 5 lists top etc. A number of these albums Gangstarr, Eric B. & Rakim etc are all as good as each other.

    26. In no particular order,

      Nas – Illmatic
      Gang Starr -Moment of Truth
      Jay – Reasonable Doubt
      Biggie – Ready to Die

too many to name… but these just the first 5 to pop up.

    28. No illmatic, no all eyez on me, no get rich or die trying, no Blueprint 1, No paid in full, No chronic, and then this gay fuck mentions carter 2 wat has happened to rap

      1. seriously quit complaining. and let me say i am not supporting mainstream rap i just thing people go about talking it down the wrong way. I’m no Drake or Wayne fan either. though it might sound like it from what i say. If your going to call out the guy, have some originality. Don’t just be like every real rap fan in the world and say what has happened to rap and put down lil wayne. Don’t name the albums that every person in the world has on their list. Also, you lose all credibility by putting down Carter 2 and then putting a 50 album on your list. I’m sorry and again i’m not promoting wayne i personally don’t like his music at all, but the Carter 2 was a far better album than anything 50 has ever put out. Lastly, you say “what has happened to rap”. Well to answer, nothing. Yes there maybe artists like Lil Wayne and Soulja Boy, but they are POP. They are only listened to by casual radio listeners. Look at the comments on this site and you will see that all people that actually seriously listen to hip hop like the classics and newer underground stuff like it. So shut up and stop trying to be so cool by criticizing mainstream rap. People like you always stand up and stay stupid stuff about it like “this is not rap”. Well your right it’s not. So just don’t listen to it and remember that it has it’s own lane and to let people who like it like it. Also, Drake didn’t even put C2 on his list, he shouted it out after as another album he likes. He had to do that or Wayne would have fired him or something. Drake had a much better list then you. Again, I hate mainstream rap also, I just hate when people criticize it like this even more. Just like whatever you like but recognize that everything else has it’s lane.

Keep in mind there is a difference between the BEST albums and the most INFLUENTIAL albums (which is why Rakim and Big Daddy Kane isnt on here), their music had the most influence on every rapper and I give them credit for taking lyricism too the next level. Ok so u didn’t like 3 out of 10, thats Good, but Since im a 80s Baby who Grew up around Mostly Crunk Bass Music and Speakers in Every1s Whip, No Limit in my Younger Days was Everywhere and Mac, Master.P Silk and C.Murder used to go Ham! Jeezy Music Hits Hard too, even though his Lyrics aint Great. Lupe though, what??? Lupe and Nas are the Best Lyricist on the Whole List and “The Cool” Was a Deep Album, With Super Lyrical Songs and Stories, and its a Classic to Me!

    62. You cant have a top 5 album and be a big fan of hip hop.

      Illmatic – Nas
Mama Said Knock You Out – LL Cool J

You cant make a top 5 album list, there is way too many albums that have made a huge impact on hip hop. That list was just off the top, I could probably name another 20 if I had time to think of dope albums

      1. You’re such a douchebag backpacker…pick albums that you connect with, not just the ones that are best known for defining hiphop.

      2. @ dhruv494

Exactly – personal top 5 favourite not greatest according to impact and sales and all that other shit.

    63. not sure about drakeslist but….all eyes on me, chronic, get rich or die trying, ready to die, and blueprint are my top five….

      1. Nah that Pharcyde album was good not great.

    67. In terms of my favorites and what made an impact on me

Illmatic (I got into hiphop from listening to these songs. I grew up on late 90’s/early 2000’s popstars and I didn’t know rappers could get this deep)

Streets Disciple (Best double album ever. I can play this from start to finish. This showed Nas growth from immature kid (Remember the times, theifs theme, virgo) to growing up and having a wife and a kid (getting married, war, etc) This was the perfect album!)

Revolutionary Vol 2 (Even if some of the lyrics were propaganda/opinion I felt them. Like he really cared about what he was saying. 4th Branch was amazing to me…The One remix with Akir..Classic)

College Dropout (I first heard Through the wire on my way to school and burned the cd from a friend….I never heard beats like that before…The sped up sample style and crazy drums were amazing for their time. Loved the anti-degree theme too, loved the realness)

Only Built For Cuban Linx/Liquid Swords (I didn’t “get” these albums and for a while I thought they were garbage…But I love them now. Made me learn that you have to be patient with things sometimes in order for you to truly understand them)

The Pretty Tony Album (To me this was Ghostface’s best album. It had next to no wu-tang involvement and it was just Ghost…even the CD didn’t have ‘Ghostface Killah’ on it…Just Ghostface. It was real and raw and I play it on a regular)

      Moment of Truth (

The Beautiful Struggle (The songs on here were very pop, but also very deep…I had never heard Kweli before this album…and this made me want to check out his shit more. Loved the black girl pain song)

Be (I always knew who Common was but I was sleeping…This is the album that woke me up. I still listen to it to this day. It made me want to rap!)

The Miseducation of Lauyrn Hill (This one speaks for itself…There will never be another r&b/hiphop album this great. I loved every song)

      1. You got some wack tastes. Street’s Disciple and The Pretty Toney Album are among the weakest albums of Nas and Ghostface’s discographies.

      2. Gotta agree. I like both those albums but Personally

Any Nas album >> Streets Disciple
