In a recent interview with XXL magazine, Drake offered an opinion about DJ Drama’s Gangsta Grillz mixtape series that surely had Hip Hop fans buzzing.
“I just find that boring, you know,” said Drake, in a portion published online as an outtake. “People might want to hear it, but it’s just not something that I really want to give you. I’d rather just give you something that lasts a little longer than that ’cause those mixtapes never really last much longer than six months.”
Yesterday evening, Drake spoke to AllHipHop.com to clarify his stance on the matter, explaining that he meant no disrespect. “In no way did I intend to discredit the Gangsta Grillz brand,” said Drake. “I have listened to many of Drama’s mixtapes and will continue to do so for years to come.”
Drake revealed that he prefered entirely new content rather than new lyrics over previously released beats, and that he likes to “hear how different artists put together an entire song from lyrics to hooks to beat selection.” He also added that he did not believe he could do an entire mixtape over other artists’ beats.
Drake’s upcoming album, Thank Me Later, is scheduled to hit stores June 15.

Now in THIS regard, Drake has room to speak. He put out arguably the best mixtape of the decade, and it was composed of a great blend of R&B/Hip-Hop sounds over original production and a few industry beats scattered throughout. He made it a success, and really CREATED something with “So Far Gone”. The “Gangsta Grillz” series preceded So Far Gone for a good stretch of time, and not one of those mixtapes was able to see the amount of success that SFG experienced. He’s right. Give me 10 original, creative, thought-provoking tracks over 25 2-minute rants over a whole bunch of gucci and wayne beats anyday. That stuff is cool, if your flow can make it interesting, but that’s not the case for 98% of rappers, so dead it. Word to Drizzy.

What is you two dudes’ problem? So Far Gone is arguably the best mixtape the last decade, a statement like that is 100% valid and justified.
You can say his post-SFG songs are “wack” or “disappointing”, you can say he’s overrated and that he dropped the ball. BUT, if you really mean to say So Far Gone is nothing other than pure fucking crack then you simply don’t know hip-hop and you don’t know good music period. He blended urban music in a perfect way and everything from the beats to the subjects to the delivery and lyrics were amazing.
I do think his work after the mixtape are lackluster, and the tracks so far released from his album are lukewarm, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that So Far Gone is the best hip-hop release in a looong time..

Mixtapes are away to give people your work without waiting too long like a fucking album, stores don’t carry that much music as they use to. To be able to give unauthorized content away for free or sale for a limited time, just to show how well you can produce and good your artist is. I do sometimes agree that their mixtapes should have been an album since it’s was better than the official one. But you have to understand these streets record do get people known with a website help to let people download it. I’ve would never have bought a lot these undergrounds artist if I didn’t hear them for free with these mixtapes free-bees.
