Grammy Award-winning artist T-Pain sparked a spirited debate following a recent Twitch session in which he berated new rappers for their unoriginality.
On Wednesday (July 14), Dr. Dre couldn’t help himself from commenting on T-Pain’s impassioned diatribe and addressed it on Instagram, his first post since May.
“Shoutout to @tpain!!” Dre wrote alongside a clip of T-Pain’s soliloquy. “I’m here laughing my fuckin ass off, but he’s right. I know and feel exactly what you’re saying.”
And Dr. Dre speaks from experience. The Hip Hop mogul broke down several barriers when he and the rest of the N.W.A crew had the moxie to shout “Fuck Tha Police” in 1988. As gangsta rap began its West Coast ascent, Dr. Dre was at the helm, paving the way for others to follow.
T-Pain on the other hand, who’s often referred to as the Godfather of Auto-Tune, dominated the mid-aughts with over 50 Billboard Hot 100 chart-toppers. Needless to say, both Dr. Dre and T-Pain have an ear for making hits.
But as T-Pain made painfully clear, he’s tired of the same old song and dance. During his entertaining Twitch rampage, he begged aspiring artists to do something new.
“We have all the shit you’re doing,” he said in part. “Lil Uzi Vert is already it. Lil Baby is already doing it. DaBaby is already doing it. It’s literally two n-ggas with Baby in their name that’s already doing all the music you want.
“Do something else! Do something else! That’s it! That’s all we want. Do something else! Holy shit. We have it! We have it already!”

T-Pain later took to Twitter and explained why he feels the way he does after he faced backlash for his commentary.
“I undrstnd not every1 likes me and may not agree with my opinions but by all means don’t make up dumb shit like ‘he just mad because he ain’t got no hits.’ I’m in all different genres. Got 2 legit Grammies in the last 3 years and got a song out rn that’s top 15 on radio in the US.”
“I’m not explaining myself I just don’t like ppl being content with being stupid and uninformed. If some rando talked shit on your page you’d look up all their SM pages to see what dirt you can get ? just do a little research before you think you hittin me wit somethin.”
This goes to all the websites promoting this garbage music, tired of hearing the same artist all the time.. can’t wait till these wack rapper fall off. This phase of rappers just have no talent “DO SOMETHING ELSE!”
Perfect time to drop that “Detox” and show ‘um how it’s done, Dr. Dre
Fam, you’re still waiting on Detox? That was literally 20 years ago. It’s not happening. He moved past it. Time for fans to do the same. That’s like people still calling for a Nas/Premo album. The ship has sailed.
in another parallel universe we got both 50’s SKI [Street King Immortal], & Detox… (oh, and Relapse 2… *sad face emojis*
actually, he just [officially] cancelled [the project] 5 years ago, so your flyer does not go up…
“you stuck in a time warp from ’04, tho”
T-Pain just jumped like 80 spots in my book.
Autotune was wack as hell the minute T-pain came up with it. Other than that, hard agree, props to the man for speaking out.
Yes, Tpain “came up” with Autotune LMAO.
T-Pain didn’t come up with autotune; autotune is as old as Zapp. Go back under your rock…
Show you know nothing about the history of music, without saying you know nothing about the history of music… Dumb.
It would be cool if the “Old Headz” come together as a whole and establish a “Commission”.
Then with their fame and name they could recommend what is original and fake…
The only person doing this at the moment is Eminem with his album features…Young MA…Preacher…Joyner…a.s.o
If I had the name and fame i would promote:
NF
Tom Mcdonnald
Hopsin
Tech N9ne and all Strange Music
Yelawolf and Slumerican
…
Take away the Momentum of all the Lil´”Enter here” and boom….Quality Music
Hey agree with what you said but you proceeded to list several wack ass rappers afterwards though. Nobody wants to hear Joyner Lucas, nf, Yelawolf or Tom McDonald bro. Lmfao even Hopsin is borderline. Barf
Thats okay. But please tell me who you like? I am ready to learn about other good rappers. Best regards!
The problem is, there is a new sound that has developed outside of the previous era’s style of creativity…and what came along with it is, a touch of dirty south reign after TuPac and Biggie’s deaths, and yes, record companies cashing in. It has led us to the stuff we are listening to now. Kids love it. Why? Because it’s the sound of today. Bottom line. I’m with T-Pain as well. We need some kind of unique sound amongst rappers again now.
T-Pain right! King Tekashi bin showin dese rappers how to build they own sound like him but ain’t listen. SMH
Dude enough. We have all forgotten about him by now
The sound you hear now is from kids being illiterate and internet smart. These kids can’t speak proper English let alone rhyme in it.Bluface,Yachty ,Kodak Black etc can’t even flow on cadence. These dudes mumble for 16 bars then make the hook clear as f*vk..sometimes at that..All these songs need nowadays to be hits is 808 bass dumb adlibs and remedial bars that kids can follow cause they dumb as hell also. They don’t care about being lyrical or repetitive. They just want it to be streamed ad nauseum..
Regardless of what you think or say about Pain..hits are hits..he was the cheat code for your favorite artist for a long time.. they knew..if you want a hit record ..get T -Pain
facts…. these soft social media 24/7 living life online for fame clowns don’t like criticism
The problem is not artists making the same type of music. There has always been trends and copycat acts. The problem is that you hear all the same music all the time on every single platform. There is no diversity of sound anymore in the genre when you listen to radio. Unless you look for it or already plugged in, you would indeed think all rappers make the same stuff nowadays. But they very much do not.
lupe fiasco – “state run radio”
And still couldn’t get these broads in the background to look up off their phone for 2 seconds. Therein lies the problem. The American attention span.
Why would we make positive music for your community, we can’t have yall walking around having sense. Fun fact a community in chaos spends more money. You all don’t know how easy it is to take a bum off the street, grow his dreds, give him tattoos and talk about what he “buys” all for you all to eat it up and try to be like him. Without fathers in most of these homes this is easy work.
It’s better when it’s all dope
I like it all now no sold out anything
Maybe I’ll go back one day and it all sound like shit again like a underground fan did
I don’t know if I wanna go back to real hiphop shit
It might just happen and it all sounds fake again
I’d like detox today Kush is a dope single
I don’t care anymore won’t kill his career at all
But if trap goes sold out again

I like black and yellow somthings different
I remembered today that big l changed shit like Rakim all that is lost like the mainstream
Rapping makes me real again?
I think it’s a conspiracy
What did the music do to me
Everybody wanna sound like a robot. The best that ever did it was Roger Troutman. No shorty, TPain didn’t come out then.
Tpain complaining about this is like New Kids on the Block complaining about Backstreet Boys or PM Dawn complaining about MC Hammer or Vanilla Ice.
Shut yo dumbass up
What does that even mean
Hi, Genius! It’s kinda like the pot calling the kettle black. T pain is wack and so are the others mentioned.
Take notorious big’s ready to die album for example, hear the drums? the overall grit? thats whats gone. Copy those types of beats and hip hop will be great again. #makehiphopgreatagain
Xzibit said it in 1996, its a shame n- in da rap game only for the money and the fame. They don’t care about the music!
Music is boring right now everything is mid Temple where is the up-tempo jams the party jam songs you can dance to, not all this slow s***
T-Pain and Cher dominated autotune back in the day
That what underground music is for. Some amazing unique artist and producers. I’m not only talking about just Griselda label either.
I’m a good rapper
I’m a dj in clubs/bars…. it’s hard to play Migos & Migos simmilar music all night.
