Dr. Dre, Method Man and more are among the names tapped to help induct A Tribe Called Quest and Mary J. Blige into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame next month.
The legendary rap group and iconic R&B singer will also be joined by Ozzy Osbourne, Cher, the Dave Matthews Band, Peter Frampton, Foreigner and Kool & The Gang to round out the class of inductees at the ceremony on October 19.
In an Instagram post this week, the HOF revealed that in addition to presenters Dre and Meth, Lucky Daye, Ella Mai and Busta Rhymes will hit the stage to perform.
Among those nominated for induction this year who did not make the final cut were Mariah Carey, Sade and Eric B & Rakim.
Mary J. Blige reacted to the news of her induction on Instagram back in April, writing: “Beyond Grateful!!!!!! This is incredible!!! God always has the final say!!!! Thank you to my fans all over the world!!!! Tears of Joy!!!!”
Founding Tribe member Jarobi White also wrote: “Wow!!! @qtiptheabstract @alishaheed we did it!!!! Phifey we got you in the hall of fame!!!! Wish you were here. Well I know you’re watching so….. Fuck yeah!!! lol To all of the questers, from the bottom of our hearts thank you!!!! #jedibusuness.”
A Tribe Called Quest have previously been nominated twice for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame — in 2022 and 2023 — and have now gotten in on their third attempt.
They are just the sixth rap group to be inducted into the Hall of Fame after Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, Run-DMC, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy and N.W.A.
After the group missed out last year, Consequence — a longtime Tribe affiliate — slammed the organizers on social media, saying: “What we not gon’ do is keep subjugating that name, A Tribe Called Quest, to a white popularity contest, and having them in there as the token n-ggas pick. We gon’ stop that.”
He added: “On a political side, what I ain’t really feeling is that now, we gotta explain 0 for 2. The merit of the music, you can’t put a record on that. You can’t put an 0 for 2 on A Tribe Called Quest and what they did for Black music. You can’t do that. I can’t allow you to do that.”
Mary J. Blige was also nominated in 2021 but failed to get in.
MJB in the rock n roll Hall of Fame before Sade is wild.
Mary J is one of the most overrated singers of all time. She can’t even sing. People loved her back in the day because she felt ‘real’, but what’s real about her now? Fake breasts, fake eyes, fake hair, fake eyelashes, fake nails, and a bad attitude on top of that. If all that was true but she made great music it wouldn’t matter, but on top of all that her music is really just…boring.
