Dr. Dre & Beats Electronics Suing Yamaha Over Copying Headphone Design

Dr. Dre has filed suit against Yamaha over copying the design of his Beats Electronics headphones.

According to a recent report from AllHipHop, the N.W.A. super-producer has filed suit against Yamaha for infringing upon the design patents of his widely successful headphone line. The suit claims that Yamaha’s PRO series headphones directly copy the design of the Beats by Dr. Dre headphone line.

“Consumers appreciated the design, as well as the sound quality, of Beats and began wearing the Beats headphones around their necks as a fashion accessory even when not listening to music,” the suit reads. “In fact, the design of the Beats headphones has been a significant driver of the commercial success of the products.”

In addition to the design patent claims, the suit argues that Yamaha’s advertisements for their headphones are profiting off of the success of Beats Electronics’ headphones and Dr. Dre’s standing in the music industry. Dre is seeking $75,000 in the suit on the basis of Trade Dress Infringement, Unfair Competition and Patent Infringement.

Recently, Beats Electronics expanded its business by opening a new digital music service called Daisy. The company also recently acquired MOG Music Network.

      1. I totally agree with you! Thank you for your insight! Go Yamaha !! Beats SUCK!! DO NOT buy them. It’s a waste of $ and why would anyone give $ to Dre? Maybe he needs new Butt Plugs?

    1. The only thing in Yahama headphone line that resembles Beats is the Pro Series. Those really don’t look like it. It shares that sleek finish design but really nothing more. I have a feeling they probably sound better also.

Believe it or not, that is how these companies stay afloat now and days. It’s through their patents. Someone else uses the design and/or feature, and that’s money you don’t have to work for. I’m surprise that lawsuit is only $75,000.

    2. this is ironic because dre and jimmy fucked the people who actually developed and designed these headphones at monster out of everything

      1. Well monster fucks everyone dumb enough to pay for their overpriced shit (especially their cables). What goes around comes around.

    3. You mean the headphones look like headphones! This is so stupid. Dre’s a fucking clown. It’s really hard to respect him these days.

75K? Really? It’s as if they already know they don’t have a case.

    4. YO WHAT THE FUCK IS YAHAMA? FUCKING HHDX CANT EVEN SPELL YAMAHA? even your source article got the spelling right and you misspelled that shit like 6 times!!!

WTF?? sean ryon just quit your job now, you are pathetic!

yahmaha been in the audio forever, long before dre was wearing lipstick and making electro music.

      1. oh shit i fucked it up too on that last line but whateva, i got it right the first two times and i am not a professional writer!

    5. Either that figure is a typo or this nigga is suing for something he lost under his couch cushions yesterday.

      1. Yamaha has been making studio equipment for a while now. And they are known for their excellent sound quality. I have a pair of their monitors on my desk now.

    6. Beats suck!! the Sound quality is really bad!! And the build quality is cheap plastic that breaks in a short time!! Theses Headphones are just for show a clothing accessory that is the bottom line. Dre and Levine is not into make a great product it all about the $$$Period!! They should be ashamed of them selfs taking hard earned$$ from music fans.
