Doja Cat looks like she’s going to be making some changes to her music, after renouncing her pop star title in the hopes of perfecting her rap game.

On Saturday (April 8), the “Woman” recording artist took to Twitter, where she revealed she’s turning a new leaf. “no more pop,” she tweeted.

“i also agree with everyone who said the majority of my rap verses are mid and corny,” she continued, responding to her critics. “I know they are. I wasnt trying to prove anything I just enjoy making music but I’m getting tired of hearing yall say that i can’t so I will.”

When questioned about what inspired the new direction — with one fan insinuating her haters got the best of her — the chart-topper admitted: “pop isnt exciting to me anymore. I dont wanna make it.”

The proclamation was well received with many claiming Doja is already dominating her competition. “cap lol you rap better than most rappers regardless of gender,” one user responded.

“Nah ur being way too humble u deserve to talk ur shit in the rap sphere already,” another user suggested.

In a recent interview with VarietyDoja Cat — chatting about her upcoming, fourth studio album Hellmouth — revealed she’s taking a “more masculine direction” following the success of 2021’s Planet Her.

“I know that I’ve done a lot of pink and soft things, a lot of pop and glittery sounds,” she said. “But for this next era, I’m going in a more masculine direction.”

While keeping tight-lipped about a release date, Doja shared the release will be a mixture of hip-hop and R&B. “I just go straight to R&B if I’m alone,” she said, adding she’ll be going “harder into that.”

Although Doja has sampled a variety of artists in the past, including Kelis, Blink-182 and B2K, last year, when asked about her current inspirations, she told Dazed the iconic Beastie Boys were at the top of her list.

“If you wanted a teaser into what I’ve been thinking about, that’s what I’ve been on a lot. And just to make it clear, Beastie Boys is a huge inspiration to me. Beastie Boys will hit you with hard, loud and crazy rap, but they’ll also hit you with real raw ‘90s punk, which I love, or smooth techno that feels sexy and sleek. And you’ll be like, ‘Where the fuck did this come from?’”
