DJ Yella Discusses Ice Cube’s N.W.A Exit

DJ Yella spoke on N.W.A’s feelings after Ice Cube left the group in 1989 following contract disputes with manager Jerry Heller.

“We never talked about it,” DJ Yella says during a recently published interview with VladTV. “It just happened. You know, he left. It wasn’t no, talkin’ no mess, it wasn’t nothin’ like that, it was just like, he went his way, but we were still here. The group didn’t fizzle away.”

Later in the interview, DJ Yella addressed the incident that led to Dr. Dre assaulting television show host Dee Barnes after an episode of FOX’s Pump It Up! depicting N.W.A in a bad light aired. Yella also spoke on whether or not he deemed the comments Ice Cube made during the show as the first shot that ignited the widely-documented feud between Cube and N.W.A.

“I guess she let [Ice Cube] say something, but they edited it right before our part… [He said something] that we didn’t know about until we saw the show on TV.

“I don’t know if it was taking the first shot but it was made to look like a first shot, the way they edited it,” DJ Yella continues. “He didn’t say, ‘F N.W.A,’ it wasn’t nothing like that. It was just something kind of simple but it was edited [in a way that made it] look like it was more than what is was.”

Continuing, DJ Yella confirmed that the aforementioned incident is what led to Dr. Dre’s assault of Dee Barnes at a release party in 1991.

“Yeah, that’s what led to all that,” DJ Yella says. “And then the songs and the back-and-forth.”

    1. It really didnt matter. NWA – NIGGAZ4LIFE went to number one and sold way more than ice cubes debut. Niggaz4life was MUCH BETTER CD.

So many wack ass beats on that 1st Cube cd. Not to mention MC REN >>>>>>>>>>>>
