DJ Spinderella Lawsuit’s Against Salt-N-Pepa Moved To Mediation

DJ Spinderella filed a lawsuit against her former Salt-N-Pepa members last month, seeking monetary compensation for unpaid royalties. On Friday (August 2), a spokesperson for Cheryl “Salt” James and Sandra “Pepa” Denton, Rich French, released a statement to HipHopDX revealing the case has been moved to mediation.

“A U.S. District Court Judge in the Dallas District today rejected DJ Spinderella’s requests for immediate relief against Salt-N-Pepa and its management, ordering the case to mediation,” French said in the statement. “We are grateful for the judge’s ruling as Salt-N-Pepa have been extremely generous to Spin over many decades and attempted to settle what amounts to a divorce, both peacefully and without rancor.

“Unfortunately, Spin and her legal team adopted a scorched earth approach that brought unnecessary attention to a business dispute that all along could have, and should have, been settled amicably and privately.”

In May, Spin revealed she wouldn’t be touring with Salt-N-Pepa as part of the New Kids On The Block: The Mixtape Tour and claimed the other two members had sent her packing.

“I’m deeply saddened to share with all the #SaltnPepa and #Spinderella fans that I will not be performing on the #NKOTB Mixtape Tour,” she wrote in an Instagram post. “Despite my participation in promoting the tour and being highly publicized as one of the acts, in January 2019 I received a ‘termination’ email from #SaltnPepa excluding me from performances with the group.”

Spinderella was originally suing for trademark infringement, fraud and breach of contract. She was reportedly most upset about what she learned from SoundExchange, a company that collects and distributes royalties to artists.

She was told Salt and Pepa have been paid over $600,000 in royalties in the last 10 years, and Spin never saw any of the money.

      1. You obviously too young to understand that in the era they come from the DJ element of hip hop was just as big if not bigger than the MC. Spin is to group what Jam Master J is to RUN DMC. An equal.

        1. Real spit you are the one who is right and wrong. You are correct in your references as it relates to the importance of the dj to the group. However many of the djs had their hands in producing the Beats for their groups ie jmj..ali shaheed..pete rock. Snp was a novelty for the group. She was hired help. But i will say after30yrs spin foes deserve something.

          1. your absolutely correct. if Spin never signed a contract from the LABEL as a MEMBER of S-N-P, thats it. like you mentioned, if she has production credits on the album, or cuts and scratches on the album then she should be gettin that money but other than that, she just the DJ for when they hit the tour.

hopefully they figure it out peacefully

          2. In case you didn’t know Spin is credited with producing several of the Albums. Also part of the reason they blew is because the era of the music video was taking off the same time as they career. Spin was always the finest in the group and a major reason they became popular is because dudes tuned in to see her in videos.

    1. hopefully Spin will get her just due. But hopefully it will allow her to be brought in as a legal partner in “Salt N Pepa” Incorporated. Lots of bands have fallen apart over certain members not being brought in to the formal business of the group as a shareholder.

    2. They are saying spin was never really part of the group, they’re saying salt and pepa is the Group and spin is the DJ they are making that distinction, in their eyes the split is like 40-40-10 or 45-45-10! I remember years ago when they signed a new contract I believe salt and pepper got like 20 million in Spin didn’t even get a third of that.
No I don’t think salt and pepa received all that money because they never completed all the albums ( they were eventually dropped from their record label)
I think they also feel this way because Spin was not their original DJ so they look at it like you were never an original part of this group.
I think it’s foul I wish the judge would’ve have dug in their pockets. Ain’t nobody checkin for salt and pepa anyway
      fat has beens!
      I’m team Spin!!!

    3. Man i hope everything gets settled and all members are satisfied…however, it just kills that innocent spirit i had of how “close” these people were when i was coming up….it’s been all business
