DJ Premier & Pete Rock Speak On Guru, Admit Competition

Pete Rock and DJ Premier have been linked in many ways. Both producers are responsible for classic material in the genre, producing quality work for years. Recently, the two sat down together for an interview with Defrag. During the interview, they spoke on everything from friendly competition to Guru’s passing.

“We’re heavy competitors with each other,” Pete Rock notes, before Premier adds his take on their competitive spirit.

“It’s not a negative jealousy. It’s more like, ‘Damn, that’s hot! I wish I made that!’ It makes you want to top it but in a good way.”

Premier was also candid in speaking about Guru. After his recent passing, Premier adds that he misses the emcee and the friend that he lost.

“I love him forever. I miss him already. I got to say my peace in closure a week before he died in the hospital. I got to see him. That, to me, was my closure to a certain degree. The rest of it takes awhile. The rest of it is one day at a time because it’s still painful…I still can’t believe it.”

Pete Rock says that Guru may not be alive but his spirit lives on.

“He’s still around. In his physical, he may not be, even though we wish he was still here. We appreciate him regardless.”

    4. People always like celebrities, but I think those in uniform deserve more respect. They defend our country and safeguard our policy. Join M i l i t a r y f l i r t i n g.c o m, show your love and respect to our military heroes.

    5. I am 18 years old, coming across an online community for individual seeking interracial love.

It is balck white date . C/O/M-

All singles there are seeking interracial relationships. Interracial is not a problem there, but a great merit to cherish!

    6. it still baffles me how primo never dropped a solo like “soul survivor”

he could get anyone on it.

      pete albums always crack.

      blaqprint was fire.

preem and pete the GOATS. next to dre and rza.

i wanna see these brothas on the next nas album.

and i wanna see pete and cl get back in together, seeing as how guru just passed, good time to say fuck the bullshit and get to work.

      mecca and soul brother
      maain ingredient

2 of the best albums ever

      1. I saw a vid of Pete Rock and CL doin a show together, so it looks like they already but the BS aside.

      2. dope.

cl still sounds the same, its incredible.

the joints they did on soul survivor 2 (while HATING eachothers guts) were far and beyond the illest cuts off the album.

their musical chemistry is off the hook. they tailor fitted for eachother. enough bullshit, lets make music for the ppl. cl and pete never got along like that, which is crazy to think about.

if pete drops this album with preem, the smif n wessun album, soul survivor 3, and wraps it all up with another cl and pete album. i can die happy and go to hip hop heaven.

preem puts in work at all times.

if preem can deliver preem/nas he can retire for all i care. he wont ever do that though, cuz hes the GOAT.

      1. HERE THE FUCK WE GO AGAIN WITH THIS FUCK SOLAR SHIT…SEE THIS IS THE SHIT THAT’S GONNA CONTINUE TO BE SAD AND THAT’S EVERY TIME WE SAY R.I.P. GURU WE ALWAYS GOT TO HEAR FUCK SOLAR WHICH JUST COMES OFF AS EXTREMELY SAD…IT’S VERY DISRESPECTFUL TO GURU IN MY OPINION…SOLAR HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS SHIT…JUST SAY R.I.P. GURU AND KEEP IT FUCKIN’ MOVING FOR ONCE AND LET THAT FUCK SOLAR SHIT DIE BECAUSE ALL YOUR DOING IS GIVING THIS PATHETIC GUY A NAME AND A SMALL PLATFORM THAT HE CAN STILL STAND ON…AND THAT’S WHAT YOU’RE DOING WHEN YOU KEEP ATTACHING HIS NAME NEXT TO GURU’S… WHY NOT SAY R.I.P. GURU AND MUCH LOVE AND RESPECT TO DJ PREMIER INSTEAD OF R.I.P. GURU FUCK SOLAR BECAUSE IF YOU HAVE THAT MUCH LOVE FOR GURU THEN YOU WOULDN’T KEEP ATTACHING THAT CLOWN SOLAR’S NAME NEXT TO HIM…

    7. When It comes The BoomBap style of hip hop, no producer can fuck with Preemo. Pete Rock is nice too. Dre is a different type of producer.

    8. In my opinion, Primo is the Greatest Hip Hop Producer of ALL TIME!!!!
I read in a magazine called SCRATCH that Primo and Nas were gonna do a joint album…That never happened, but if it does it’s gonna be a serious problem!

    9. fuck SOLAR. I truly think that if you wrong a person in this life you will one day have to answer for it. I just hope solar lives long enough to see all he has maid off the back of guru, fail. Thus making him leave the game, the way he came in, with nothing, Go carry some records fag.
