Distant Relatives Show Their Recording Process, Studio Guests

Yesterday, HipHopDX exclusively premiered a trailer from the Distant Relatives, on their upcoming May 18th album. The behind-the-scenes look at making Damian Marley and Nas’ album features appearances and commentary from Busta Rhymes, K’Naan, DJ Green Lantern and Saul Williams.

Perhaps most surprisng, the footage features Natural Born Killers and Wall Street director Oliver Stone chilling with the Relatives during one particular studio session. “The world’s going to shit anyway. This is evidence: you can put on [the] E! channel or Punk’d or whatever the fuck you want,” said the three-time Academy Award-winner, spliff in hand. “[The only people who matter are good guys] – people who, like, pay attention. Those are the only people that matter. There’s less of them, but they’re important people.”

The Distant Relatives are paying attention to things, including to themselves. Marley explained how the richness of this music and its cause made this project quickly evolve from EP to LP, which each of the artists realized what they were touching upon.
“This is a big step forward for me. This is not something that you’d expect,” added Nas in the trailer. The Queensbridge emcee already has acclaimed albums in Illmatic, Hip-Hop is Dead  and 2008’s Untitled album.

Looking at Distant Relatives first leaked song, “As We Enter” , Marley said that song was a turning point in the recording. “That was the first time we really got into the booth and started feedin’ off each other’s energy.”

The Jamaican-born Reggae sensation said in closing that 2010 is the perfect arrival point for Distant Relatives. “The globe right now is ready for change. And this, right now, is the soundtrack for all of that.”

Distant Relatives releases May 18 on Universal Republic Records.

      1. Don’t forget Mr. Stone wrote Scarface, which iz, of course obligatory B-Boy viewin’. He also directed my all time favourite movie, Natural Born Killers, which uzed Dre’z The Day The Niggaz Took Over in a scene that made perfect sense, whereaz most non-“Hood” flicks use rap music incongruously.

    2. Oliver stone is an Old school Hippie, check his movies like Platoon and Midnhight express, not to mention JFK, he’s got alot of political opinions, I’m not surprised he’s a Nas fan, it makes sense…………

I cant wait for this record, I think this is gonna be the one Genre-Mixing album thats gonna work really well

    3. wow finally we get to see what they’re doin and it sounds soooo hot there’s no doubt bout it im gettin it

    4. like buddy said on the bottom of me, it is a perfect way to start the summer…..This album is going to be a monster this summer….they make a great music together from the first song the put together and the new tracks they put out now….Nas is back.

    5. ‘The Queensbridge emcee already has acclaimed albums in Illmatic, Hip-Hop is Dead and 2008’s Untitled album’

      It Was Written?
      Stillmatic??
      God’s Son???

I think they were better than Hip Hop is Dead.

    6. This is hot. Add Akon or K’naan to at least one track and you have a tri-fecta with the trans-atlantic thing.

If this leaks – I’ll still cop the album.

    7. this is the soundtrack for the new world order.. as knowledgable as we pretend to be.. the end times will be realized.. we will witness the extension of mankind.. peace will threaten the fabric of the world religions and the extremists who practice them.. they will not conform or be tolerant of others, they will seek the necessary weapons (of the weak) and destroy life as we know it.. but they cannot destroy the universe.. it will still be here and another species will escalate to power as the dinosaurs before us.. when will humans wake up to the fact that the world will not end, only transform.. there is no ending or beginning.. these books are tools of manipulation to give one people a dominance of all others.. it is supremacy, the very thing minorities have fought their entire lives to stop, they still embrace and support another form.. there is one race.. the human race.. isn’t it time we joined together to prolong our existence instead of supporting ideals that seek to end it
