Digital Albums Thrive While Individual Tracks And Other Units Falter In 2010

According to Billboard.com and Nielsen SoundScan, digital albums were primarily the only music unit to witness a somewhat modest increase compared to sales in 2009. 86.3 million digital albums were sold in 2010 as opposed to 76.4 million sold in 2009, a 13 percent increase.

Sales of physical albums (CD’s) dropped by 20 percent, a number that has steadily decreased in the past four years.

Overall music unit sales (albums, digital tracks, and music videos) in 2010 totaled 1.51 billion, a 2.4 percent decrease compared to the year prior.

In 2010, only 13 albums were able to sell over 1 million units. Among them was Eminem’s Recovery with 3.4 million units sold making it the best-selling title of the year.

As expected the lack of album sales are a result of illegal downloads on peer-to-peer networks and also the decreasing presence of music shops.

SoundScan was created in 1991 and has been used to calculate various Billboard music charts.

    1. I agree with you. If Eminem wasn’t white he wouldn’t be selling that many records anyway, its regretful, but true. His white fan base will save him everytime regardless of the quality of his music.

      1. “Let’s do the math, if I was black, I would’ve sold half/I Ain’t have to graduate from Lincoln high school to know that.”

        Eminem’s White America

    2. Don’t blame Eminem’s skin color. That would be like saying Tom Brady has won Super Bowls because he was white. When are people going to wake up and just accept the fact that some people simply put more effort into their careers than others. And the funny thing is alot of these black rappers are going wood, yet still touting themselves as these great rappers.

    3. Illegal downloading isn’t to blame. There were very few event albums that came out this year. Eminem, Kanye, Nicki all sold well because they are stars and make top level music, hence the masses go out and buy. Downloading only really hurts the people putting out mediocre music because people aren’t willing to pay money for smthg that’s just so so and will be disposed of in a week

      1. nah, illegal downloading affects everyone. Lady Gaga probably would have gone 10 times plat back in the day. The idea that people only buy quality gives music fans too much credit. The masses have always supported garbage, the difference is that nowadays they no longer have to pay for it.

i just hope the cd doesn’t disappear anytime soon. i hate mp3’s.

    4. Only 13 albums went platinum?! Wow!

I guess the days of artists producing quality products to make are back!!

      YES!!!

    5. Skin color has nothing to do with Eminem’s success Eminem is just that good and has that strong of an established fan base that when he puts out a good product like he did with Recovery, people will buy it.

    6. Really still the white logic? So then Bubba Sparkx and every other white rapper has gone super plat then and have legitimate careers smh
