Diddy had some stuff to get off his chest during his acceptance speech for the Salute to Industry Icons Award. The Hip Hop mogul put the Grammys on blast at Clive Davis and the Recording Academy’s Pre-Grammy Gala on Saturday (January 25).
Inside the ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California, Diddy criticized the Recording Academy for the lack of respect shown to Hip Hop over the years
“I say this with love to the Grammys because you really need to know this,” he said. “Every year y’all be killing us, man. Man, you talk about the pain. I’m speaking for all the artists and executives. The amount of time that it takes to make these records, to pour your heart out into it and you just want an even playing field. In the great words of Erykah Badu, we are artists and we are sensitive about our shit.”
Diddy continued, “Truth be told, Hip Hop has never been respected by the Grammys. Black music has never been respected by the Grammys to the point that it should be.”
The speech elicited cheers from an audience that included many of Diddy’s peers, including JAY-Z. The reprimanding of the Academy also came with an ultimatum.
“For years we’ve allowed institutions that never had our best interests at heart to judge us and that stops right now,” Diddy stated. “I’m officially starting the clock you got 365 days to get this shit together.”
The Bad Boy Records founder threw his name into the mix to help the Academy fix the issues that have been plaguing it since Hip Hop was recognized as a category for the Grammys in 1989.
“I’m here to help make a difference and help us have a positive outcome,” he noted. “I believe all of my brothers and sisters out there will be willing to work on getting this right.”
He then dedicated his award to the artists such as Missy Elliott and Nas, who didn’t win Grammys for their classic albums Da Real World and Illmatic.

Grammys should just get 5 black ppl let them choose the hiphop and rnb awards so theyll stfu. Every yr its always some black person complaining about something w the grammys
Diddy saying what every Hip Hop artist SHOULD be thinking or saying but, of course, the original rebellious and anti-establishment attitude of Hip Hop is no more. Nowadays you got these young softies like YBN Cordae CRYING TEARS over being simply nominated for a Grammy. Any Hip Hop artist with an ounce of love and respect for the culture and genre knows that they shouldn’t give a fuck about a god damn Grammy. A Grammy award is the least respectable accolade a pure bred rapper can receive but, this new, wack, and younger generation’s idea of “real” success is a Grammy win, even if that win is NEVER coming from the “Big 4” categories. Who really should give a fuck about winning “Best Rap album”? Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist simply has far more pizzazz but, we ain’t winning those tho.
I wish Bet Hip Hop awards would award those Hip Hop purest artists that been around longer than artists on a major label, those so called underground Hip Hop artists don’t get the type of celebration from an award show that suppose to celebrate Hip Hop, there isn’t another show that dedicate that type of genre they have it as a side note. Until Bet acknowledge those artists who’ve been holding it down since Russell and Rick left Def Jam and there wasn’t too many rappers coming off Bad Boys. These underground Hip Hop artists have worked with some of these top tier artists and had classic albums also.
Black music. So music has a color now? What is black music exactly? Hip hop isnt black never was. They use white technology to make it. Baseball hats are white. Like trousers and sneakers. Like microphones. Even gold chains.
Hiphop isnt from africa. Jazz is neither. Just like rock isnt from europe. Its all american.
Diddy wants to play a rebel and freedom fighter. But his stupid look at me remarks make him look like a fool and hes trying to divide on race. Im not ok whit that.
Peace to all
Nonsense – America is a mix of cultures and has no culture of its own except white European colonial culture. Jazz and hip hop are expressions of african spirit sprouted from the ground africans were forcibly Placed in. While the bodies could, the african spirit could not be chained and it grew into many beautiful expressions that moved people around the world – that’s why hip hop and jazz are in every country. And unlike the exclusionary tendencies of white cultural institutions, they have openly accepted and shared these artforms which have been adopted by the world over. But never forget where it comes from or it will never survive.
That was beautiful! Very wise person.
Preach! Thank you, sir.
Reply was to Dolas
DUDDY the racist and MOST OVER RATED Music person EVER pulls the Race Card! …while he kills MILLIONS of people and BREAKS FAMILIES apart pushin’ that poison Alcohol to young people – Shootings, Drunk Driving fatalities, Infidelity killings and alcoholism breaking up families and lives! DUDDY F*CK YOU! S T F U
How the fuck is it Diddy’s fault if your dumbass kid makes the choice to drink and kills himself driving, thats your fault not Diddy’s. You may not agree with what he said on that stage but don’t make clown ass comments like that that aren’t grounded in reality. Who raised you lmfao
With a mentor like ray Dalio, Diddy really showing his depth which is shockingly shallow. Is he being paid to say this? Also, would they really give a Grammy to a deserving artist, or would it go to industry puppets like Cardi b etc. Hip hop was way better before it blew up
Academy slams Diddy back “when you start making black music we will consider you”
Coming from a leach who has taking advantage of black artists his whole career it doesn’t carry much weight. Smh
You mean Kanye didn’t win 21 Grammys already?
Uhh, I just looked up artists with the most grammys… And about 50% of them are black lol. Black music has been respected by the grammys. Stevie Wonder, JayZ, Kanye West, Quincy Jones.. Nas was nominated 13 times, Snoop was nominated 17 times….. I can go on and on and on. Obviously, the award shows recognize success and popularity, not mainly talent, but at the same time, if it was purely about popularity, not talent, then Snoop Dogg would have won a Grammy. But he’s wasn’t all that talented. 1 classic album, 18 average to bad albums.
But who wins album of the year most of the time.
Is that a serious question? The person who has the most commercial success, obviously. It’s not a skin color thing. Mackelmore beat Kendrick at the time because his music was more universally played. Little kids, adults, old people, ect… Hiphop isn’t for all ages, for the most part. Not for children, not for old people, mostly for teenagers and young adults. So it’s quite obvious as to why the album of the year generally goes to a POP STAR. It’s not that it’s given to white people instead of black, it’s that the black men n women who have lost have music that isn’t for every station.
They gave Diddy the best rap album for No Way Out over Wu-Tang Forever. I haven’t taken the grammys seriously ever since. RIP ODB.
Lets assume what Sean Love Alcohol Combs is saying is correct, which we know is not. Black music has BET awards and Soul Train awards, whats the problem here? Most of the fans of Black music are white people anyway. Instead of always whining for acceptance, why not level up the BET and Soul Train awards. Black people should really stop this nonsense, its beyond pathetic now.
Maybe it has something to do with the whole world has heard of the grammy`s and BET never was a global thing?
Now all of a sudden the industry wants to speak about old shit we already know.
The Grammy’s been a fluke. Grammy’s equal Shammy’s.
Grammys are a joke. Awards always go to who is the most popular instead of the real artists.
Either way, you’re all wrong. Fuck you all, Kanye 2024. Make America gay Again.
