Dame Dash Disses John Legend For Not Signing With Roc-A-Fella

Dame Dash had some shade to throw John Legend‘s way recently while reflecting on Roc-A-Fella’s roster in the early 2000s.

In a new interview with The Art of Dialogue, Dame revealed a list of people who were allegedly supposed to sign with the label before it went defunct, which included the award-winning singer.

“John Legend was supposed to be Roc-A-Fella,” he said. “I toured John Legend. I would have never took John Legend on the road with Kanye and paid for him to go around the world to sing before Kanye sang unless I thought that he was going to sign to Roc-A-Fella – but he did some sneaky shit and went to Sony.”

Though he didn’t sign to the Roc, John Legend did end up continuing his relationship with Kanye and went on to become the first artist on Ye’s G.O.O.D. Music imprint. He released his 2004 debut Get Lifted through a joint venture between Sony and G.O.O.D., and went on to release five more albums on G.O.O.D. Music through 2016.

However, the former collaborators no longer have a relationship after butting heads over their differing political views as Ye was running for president in 2020.

In a 2022 interview with The New Yorker, Legend expounded on the fallout and claimed his initial comments about their crumbling friendship were misconstrued.

“Yeah, what it got described as was, we stopped being friends because he supported Trump, which was a mischaracterization of what I said,” Legend explained. “That was kind of the Rupert Murdoch version of the story — it was all over the New York Post and Fox News.”

Legend explained West was particularly bothered by his support of Biden instead of him.

“What I was saying was that he was very upset with me that I didn’t support him running for President, and that was the real impetus for us having a strain in our friendship,” he continued. “I don’t know what will happen in the future, but he was very upset with me that I didn’t support him and I supported Joe Biden. It’s up to him whether he can get past that.”

Kanye told a similar story during his Drink Champs appearance the year prior, saying at the time: “Both John Legend and Big Sean, when I ran for office, got used quick by the Democrats to come at they boy that actually changed their life. And that’s some sell-out shit. And I don’t rock with neither of them.”

    1. Sounds like John made the right move. Otherwise, he’d be on podcasts looking dusty like Dame and Aschino talking about what Jay-Z didn’t do for him the last 20 years.

    2. Btw, Christion was on Roc, had a great debut, and were never heard from again. So not the best track record with R&B artists. Not the best track record with anyone not named Jay-Z if we’re being real.

    3. Should’ve wrote a book instead of doing all these interviews and podcasts. It’s too late now because he told everybody everything.

    4. He prob watched how you operated in business and talked to people and figured you were not the best thing for a flourishing career..
