Consequence Admits To Ghostwriting On Jay-Z’s “Encore”

Consequence dropped by Power 106 this week and discussed his role as a ghostwriter in the rap industry.

While he considers it taboo to “out” who he’s written for, he does reveal he had a hand in writing the chorus on Jay-Z’s 2003 The Black Album cut “Encore.”

“One record, in particular, I was happy about to be a part of was Jay-Z’s ‘Encore,'” Cons says. “When me and Kanye kinda was on the phone and we actually kinda came up with the chorus back and forth.”

Since he’s not credited on the project, this technically makes Consequence a ghostwriter for the catchy Jay-Z hit. A fact that proves that even the most highly acclaimed MCs sometimes get a little written help to make their music.

As a longtime collaborator of Ye, who was in the studio while The Life of Pablo was being recorded, he gave his input on Meek Mill attempting to discredit Drake by outing the identity of his alleged ghostwriter, Quentin Miller.

Ghostwriting has become a highly discussed hot topic since the reveal. Hip Hop heads have been mulling over whether or not an artist has “help” writing his raps matters or not. It should be understood that your favorite rapper doesn’t write all of his rhymes.

“It’s a little venomous to out somebody’s [ghostwriter],” the 39-year-old rapper says. “Especially if  you were paid, compensated and you did get your credit and publishing it’s kind of like that’s it. That’s just the closed deal. It’s a closed book.”

    1. Lol. A hook?

The title of the article would lead someone to believe that Cons actually wrote some of his actual bars.

      Click bait. It worked. Smh.

      1. Yup of course . Another poor excuse of journalism, usually it’s fucktoria shitnandez but this time its a new retard I see. Welcome hhdx shitnise fuckson…how much do these retards gets paid to write thsee half ass stories. Unfortunately still better than osteoporosis shitty hip hop sites

        1. Why is it click bait when you’re the one that read it? It clearly says consequence ghostwrote ON jay-z’s encore not the entire song. Step your reading comprehension game up.

    2. all these hiphop nerds just fainted. Jay-Z had help? I guess that makes him unworthy of being called a true MC. Of course, he can join the company of Ice Cube, Nas, Drake, Chuck D, Run DMC, Beastie Boys, Biz Markie, Phife Dawg, ODB, Eazy-E, Ghostface Killah and everyone else so not that it matters

      1. Right. Drake Stans use all of those names as an arguement for his fake ass. I can say I am an uncredited writer on a song. And? Any proof?

      2. All of those guys except for one or two can freestyle, something Aubrey can’t. They also use slang that comes from their country and city…

    3. Does he also admit to Joe Budden kicking his ass? That’s a fact that can be corroborated about this phony dick rider… Anyone can say they ghost wrote for someone. Q. Miller is credited as a writer on Back to back, yet he is nowhere to be heard on the song…

    4. (Consequence Admits To Ghostwriting On Jay-Z’s “Encore” by Cherise Johnson)

So should we all believe Cherise Johnson is into click and bait or is he trying to make shit up?

      1. How is it made up? For the record Jay Z has never gone on record to not using ghostwriters even after all this Drake stuff and after Consequence said he wrote for him.

        1. Dude relax, you have no idea what your talking about. Writing hooks and writing lyrics are to very different things. Jay Z never used a ghostwriter let alone reference tracks. Stay rocking that Drake music and leave the real hiphop to people who listen to it.

          1. I am relaxed. Sorry if your hurt by the fact that Jay Z uses ghostwriters(guess what? under intellectual property laws and copyright laws a hook is considered to be lyrics!). You obvious don’t know anything about hip hop, lyrics, or music laws. So be ignorant and keep rocking the ghostwritten lyrics you like so much.

    5. What I find funny is how people are trying to make it seem that having a ghostwriter pen a track for you is ok, but but no one will fes up about it and try to keep that shit under raps…. smh

    6. The chorus is done by kanye so he wrote kanye part must artist when its a feat on the hook the person featured came up with it or beat makers have hooks to the beat already

    7. oh no not meeks idol…. lol event though that bitch ass admitted to having wale help him write his verses and hooks

    8. Can I get a encore do you want more? Cookin raw with a Brooklyn boy…..Idc about the hook. I care about bars!! He didn’t say he wrote Jay-Z bars. Smh drake and apple paying y’all too?

    9. This nobody still getting interviews get the f outta here never could make his own music now he claiming status on sum ole ass Jay Z album .

    10. Tupac never had a ghostwriter Rakim never had a ghostwriter Bun B never had a ghost writer , Doe B never had a ghost writer , Bone thugs Never had ghostwriters, Eminem never had ghostwriters, Mac Dre never had a ghostwriter, ……shout out to the real M.C.s who kept the creative process authentic….Kept it G

      1. And you know this how? Because their ghostwriters aren’t breaking the g-code you think they never had help? FOH

    11. Bullshit…. Just a bunch of Nas stans trying to get back at King HOV. Everyone knows King HOV writes every single word that comes out of his luscious lips.

      1. It’s a chorus dude, it’s not a big deal. If he said he actually pinned some lyrics then Jay would have some explaining to do.

    12. Dunno… A quarter of that song is the hook and the most memorable part of the song. It’s not like it was a few words or one line. Jay Z uses credits his song writers for much less than that. Well this one slipped through without Consequence getting credit.

    13. Wasn’t this song meant for Kanye in the first place. I thought he gave it to Hov?

Kanye is in the chorus/hook as well. That’s not a ghostwrite, that’s a collaborative effort that people didn’t get credit for

    14. All BIG artistes need lil help(call it whatever you want) from somewhere to appeal to their BIG fan base across the world & to stay relevant for LONG.You are deluded if you think they don’t(Hiphop or Not)

    15. Yo… There’s no shame in getting help with a hook. That was never an issue in an argument against the greats. When people help with the 16s that diqualifies an emcee.

    16. Many producers have hooks and beats ready for artist. Swizz & Pharell have given Jay beats w/ hooks already. We’ve seen that on Backstage. When someone says that wrote Jay’s BARS…I’ll listen. Not worried about a hook.

    17. Jay z most be looking for some ghost writer cause all the last releases have gonne under the bridge, his last move putting all those rappers together just didn’t work, he is boring

    18. They all have ghostwriters, Snoop had Bad Lucc write a lot of his rhymes and 50 Cent rhymed Hayes lyrics on “Business Mind”.

Slim the Mobster writes all types of stuff for all types of artists. The industry is like pro wrestling. Its all worked.

      1. That ain’t pro wrestling. That’s called making music. If Prince, probably the most talented artist of a generation got help to construct songs, what the fuck do you think these rappers are doing when their record label tells them to come up with a hit so they can push these units? It’s kind of silly to think that they were writing that shit themselves. It’s all about them putting their stamp on it and making it sound interesting when they spit it. That’s a talent. Even with singers who get demos from other artists, the talent lies in the singer who makes it a hit when they sing it like Michael Jackson’s Man in the Mirror vs. the demo or Rihanna’s Diamonds in the sky vs. the demo. Why or how this became the way rap fans viewed this genre is beyond me since most of the pioneers when I first started listening to this shit 30 years ago either had one person in the group write all the lines or had ghostwritten rhymes. The 90s cats were still doing a lot of that but stopped making it so known. It was why Meek Mill “calling somebody out” for what the whole damn industry does in some capacity or another was stupid. It’s whether or not you can produce a hot song, bottom line. That’s all people care about.

    19. If Consequence ghost wrote all of these songs, why can’t he write a song of his own to save his life. I call bs

      1. About to rip him a new ass hole in a couple weeks! I know Jay think I forgot. Trust me.. he’s on some Melania Trump shit!!? We can do this this the easy way or the LEGAL way. And yes I have receipts!

    20. People are surprised Jay Z uses ghostwriters?

How many Biggie lyrics has this dude used without giving Bigs credit.

    21. I can’t believe how many people don’t care that Jay Z used a ghost writer for the hook on this song when the hook was best part lyrically of that song.

    22. The hook was best written part of that song. Kind of messed up that HOV didn’t give credit where credit was due.

    23. Most producers that are also artists (like Pharrell and Kanye) already have a hook written when they give a rapper a beat. It’s shown in the Fade to Black film that Kanye already had the “I’m from the murder capital where they murder for capital” line written when he first played the Lucifer beat for Jay. Getting help on a hook is much different than getting help on a 16. Jay has never been known as a songwriter.

      1. But Kanye was credited on that track as a writer. Consequence didn’t get credited on this song like Kanye on Lucifer.

    24. Wow from DX to the Drake fans. All are trying to discredit Jay Z. All good though, only kids with tight ass paints will listen to this bullshit. lol

      1. Well, if you like HOV then you must accept he uses ghostwriters like Drake. I don’t get how that is discrediting Jay Z just a fact doesn’t matter if you wear tight ass pants or pants down around your ankles like you do

        1. Lmao no… Kanye n con wrote the chorus and performed it with hov and Cassie. Con wrote the chorus with the producer… He didn’t write hovs verse.. Drak as ppl write verses… Stop reaching

          1. Umm… Dummy. The hook is performed by Jay Z and its probably the best piece of that garbage song. What happens when you repeat lyrics(the Hook still counts as being a lyric within the song) that you don’t give credit too?

You are now using an uncredited writer for your song aka ghostwriter. Is this really that hard for you to understand the facts of this situation?

            1. The hook is performed by Kanye…. I didn’t read anything else you wrote because after that i assumed everything else you said is wrong.

        1. When I hear a reference track of one of his verses is when he’s discredited a few hooks don’t threaten his legacy bro

          1. You 100% correct! Just because the hook in that song was the best thing lyrically about it and HOV used it without credit, that in no way should ever tarnish his legacy. I mean, I sure that was the only time it ever happened.

    25. This is just made up Bullshit from Nas stans. No one can touch my King HOV. People just mad because Nas is a broke loser. I mean, look at King HOV in his mid forties still rapping about the drug game, internet memes and asking people to google him! Do you really think a ghostwriter can write lyrics at the level of King HOV?

    26. I’m not surprised by this, Hov doesn’t write lyrics down and Camron made a song called Swagger Jacker detailing all the songs lyrics that Jay stole from rappers between 80s – Early 2000s

        1. True…True…. That song was basically about him screwing people in business deals, stealing peoples flows and “quoting” other Mc’s lyrics without giving them credit. Which isn’t ghostwriting but plain stealing. But like you said some people don’t know enough about hip hop to tell the difference between a theif and a legend… At least I think that was your sentiment.

    27. Dunno if I can agree with you lames that a hook isn’t lyrics, part of the song or its not important who wrote it. It doesn’t seem like Consequence was credited on the song and Hov used those lyrics. A fact is a fact and that’s the definition of ghostwriting, using words in a song that other people aren’t credited for. Although, not sure why people are so mad about Jay Z using ghostwriters, it seems pretty obvious he has been using them for a long time.

    28. Y people think Joe budden held his mouth on that one interview..he was going to air out hov but he didn’t because he said if he started talking the whole rap game will b fucked up and he is right..any1 ever thought y any1 couldnt get close to kanye, guru, just blaze,Chris from young gunnas.. And the list goes on and on in that ROCAFELLA SWEAT SHOP lol..jayz bin having ghost writer s since after reasonabeD he crossed over after that..and every1 in the industry knows but scared to say..500 ur wife 300 and the devil behind u..nigga u better shut the fuck up and head for the hills lol

      1. Joe Budden? Shut your mouth and bow down to King HOV. You Nas stans are all the same, Joe Budden can’t even body Drake.

    29. Omillio sparks wrote the hook that goes ” im a hustler baby/ I just want you to know/” this isn’t new

      1. Shut the fuck up! It’s a hook no one cares about that shit. You Nas stans will make anything up to make up for that broke ass loser Nas. Respect King HOV!

    30. I guess its technically using ghostwriter but it was a shitty pop song. I’ll give Jay a pass unless something else comes up. To be honest, I am more worried about his current output. Some of his bars have been straight up wack recently.

      1. And this is the bottom line. His last few efforts have been subpar. If he needs a ghostwriter to get back on his game, he needs to call them up because I like to hear his perspective, whatever spin he puts on the few lines that he gets. Whatever he eneds to be inspired, he’s good at rapping, which I doubt whoever has helped him over the years is as good as at. People sitting around with their purity tests when this is in the music industry where it’s all about making something that sounds good, and there is a lack of that these days.

    31. Only slow people are shocked by this. Like I said when the Drake shit happened, Prince and Michael Jackson had people helping them construct actual songs that take way more talent to come up with, but it’s inconcievable that these rappers who mostly are barely literate get a few lines here or there from other rappers. About the only rapper I wouldn’t believe it was Pac because he had whole rhyme books and shit,a nd even with him, had he not died so young, I wouldn’t have put it past him to get lines from the people around him as time wennt on because you only have so many ideas yet you need to keep pushing the records out.

    32. Jay Z will ever remain the best n most relevant hip hop will ever see…King Hov purple rain in the drought.
