Charlamagne Tha God has revealed the real reason why Angela Yee left The Breakfast Club — and it isn’t for any “salacious” reason.

Yee announced last August that she was departing the popular Power 105.1 show and revealed she’d be hosting her own nationally syndicated daily show on iHeart Radio called Way Up With Angela Yee.

In a follow-up interview with Variety, Yee simply said that her departure from the morning show had been coming for a “long time” and that there was no animosity between her and her co-hosts.

“To be clear, I knew this was coming for a long time, for months and months, like probably over six months before we announced it, so while it might have been kind of shocking and out of nowhere for some people, this is something that I knew was going to happen so it’s just a relief to not have to be all secretive about it,” Yee said at the time.

Charlamagne stopped by VladTV on Wednesday (May 10) and reaffirmed this point, saying that she simply had gotten an opportunity to do her own thing and she took it.

“I think people want it to be something salacious, but it’s not,” Charlamagne said. “She left Breakfast Club because she got the opportunity to do her own nationally syndicated show. Way Up With Angela Yee is a nationally syndicated show it comes on 10 am to 2pm right after The Breakfast Club, and I think that would be hard for anybody to pass up … Angela Yee never got the opportunity to host her own show on terrestrial radio.”

He went on to say that Yee was the only one out of the BC trio that never got the opportunity to host her own morning show and that the chance for her to do so was long overdue.

“It’s kinda hard to pass up the opportunity to be the only syndicated Black woman at iHeart,” Charlamagne said. “I think that’s a great opportunity why not take it? And when you been doing the same thing for 13 years everybody don’t have the same way of doing things.”

At the end of Yee’s last broadcast on December 2, 2022, she shared a final toast with the entire Breakfast Club crew backstage as everyone said their goodbyes.

“We’ve had quite a run, so I just want to thank everyone that was up here with us. Looks like the pandemic is over, this is like a super spreader,” she joked. “But thank everybody for just being here with us and rocking with us for so long. We’re in the Radio Hall of Fame, that is a huge deal, we don’t take that for granted.”

She continued: “It takes a team of people to be able to do this so I’m excited for what The Breakfast Club is going to do. So I want to make sure if there’s anything I can do to make the transition smooth other than come up there and work, I will make sure to help in anyway.”

Yee closed out her speech by saluting the 12 years she put in with Charlamagne Tha God and DJ Envy while also establishing their dominance by asking who else has done it like them.

“I do want to just say, Angela Yee, job well done,” Charlamagne said to Yee at the end of the broadcast. “Job well done. They can never take away what we built. We’ve all made history together as a radio show, we’re in the Radio Hall of Fame. We are linked together forever, and us three have created a blueprint for a lot of people to follow.”

He continued: “I just thank God for bringing us together, and I thank God for the last 13 years. I can’t wait to see what God has planned for us next, and I know that it’s going to be incredible and I know you’re going to have tremendous success with Way up with Angela Yee.”
